Sand is a common fine aggregate used in a construction work. In this research,
the main concern is to find out the relative performance of river bed sand and crusher dust. The study only focuses the physical properties of sand and stone dust. To find out the strength properties of river bed sand and crusher dust, sieve analysis was done to find out the fineness modulus, zoning and surface index of sand. Cubes having different proportions of river bed sand and crusher dust of design mix M 15 and M20 was prepared using DOE method to find out the variations in compressive strength with the variations in proportions of river bed sand and crusher dust. The fineness modulus, zoning and surface index experiments on different sands revealed that instead of river bed sand alone or crusher dust alone, mixture of coarse sand(river bed sand) and fine sand(crusher dust) confirms IS:383 1970 criteria having fineness modulus 3.2 and surface index 0.782. Also, compressive strength of mixture of sand having fifty fifty proportion of river sand was 24.52 Mpa instead of river bed sand alone having 20.19 Mpa and crusher sand alone having 19.17 Mpa compressive strength respectively for M20 design mix. It indicates that river bed sand can be replace by crusher dust by half of its amount without compensating the strength properties.
