Dear Parishioners,
Todays readings are all about Gods mercy. Moses begs pardon
from God and the people are forgiven (Exodus). St Paul humbly
recognises his conversion and his sinfulness: Christ Jesus came into the
world to save sinners. I myself am the greatest of them. (Timothy). St
Luke records the greatest short story ever told! Jesus parable of the Prodigal Son. In this
Year of Mercy, it is central to what we as a church and people are trying to celebrate,
In May this year, Pope Francis in his General Audience said: By calling for a feast of
thanksgiving, the father is really asking each son to share his joy by recognising the other
as a brother ,,, Jesus wishes to teach us that we are children of God not because of any
merits of our own but because of the infinite love of our heavenly Father ,,, How often do
we need to be reminded of Gods unchanging love and forgiveness, lest we lose heart when
we ourselves or our dear ones go astray?
The parable ends without our knowing how the older brother responds to this
invitation. Jesus in effect is challenging each of us to think about how we respond to Gods
invitation, to open our hearts to his reconciling love and to become merciful like the
Father.
BIRTHDAY PARTY: Thanks to all who have already sent me cards and generous
gifts: Thanks to all who are organising and present at the Mass (11 oclock) and reception
afterwards; thanks to my family members who have travelled from Tipperary and those
who celebrated with me while I was in Ireland. I would sincerely wish to join with others
who are celebrating significant occasions in their lives in 2016. It is good to celebrate and
thank God for the gift of life and the friends and family that are so important in our lives. A
BIG THANKS TO ALL!
PLANNED GIVING: Now to more mundane matters, and you know how I love
talking about money! It has been 8/9 years since we have had a Planned Giving Drive in
the Parish. (Not to be confused with your generous giving in the Growing in Faith project).
As you know, balancing the books, family budgeting can be a tricky business. So we need
to review our income with a view to increasing it this calls on the generosity of every
parishioner. With everybody giving a little more each week, we can keep well within the
targets necessary. You have been very generous and responsible in the past. This was
why we, as a parish were able to buy No 10 Vincent Road and then be able to welcome the
Verbum Dei Missionary Fraternity.
So over the next three weeks we will focus on our financial situation and ask for
your generosity. Week One: Fr Damian and I will introduce the topic. Week Two: During
Mass three parishioners will do a further presentation, Week Three: You will be invited to
make a commitment decide on how much you are able to contribute each week (banking
details will need to be available). Thank you for all your help.
Thats all for now, God bless.
Fr Joe
