F Respiratory Care
Competency: F-2, Oxygen Therapy
Subcategory: F-2-1, Demonstrate knowledge and ability to recognize
indications and contraindications for oxygen administration.
I have learned the indications and contraindications for oxygen
administration because of studying the NFDN 2003 Moodle materials,
Medical Surgical and Fundamentals of Nursing books as well as
attending Guided Practice Labs. I was able to apply what I learned
from the books and print materials during our guided lab and CIA. In
one of our bed rotations, I was given a scenario of a COPD patient
complaining of shortness of breath. After I did my respiratory
assessment, vital signs, including SP02, I administered oxygen at
2L/min because patient showed signs of hypoxia and hypoxemia.
Oxygen should be administered at a low rate because high flow rate of
oxygen is contraindicated to COPD patient.
I have learned that the indications for oxygen administration are
hypoxia and hypoxemia. Sign and symptoms include dyspnea, fast
heart rate, rapid breathing, pallor, and cyanosis, wheezing, use of
accessory respiratory muscles, confusion, restlessness and low levels of
SpO2. I have also learned that administration of high flow rate of
oxygen may depress the respiratory rate of my patient in the scenario
which has COPD. Carbon dioxide will accumulate which may lead to
respiratory acidosis. This learning experience is meaningful because I
have learned the importance of knowing the indications and
contraindications for oxygen administration. Knowing these will be
helpful in caring for my future patients. Knowing these can lead to
safety and prevent complications of the patients respiratory condition.
I would rate my proficiency as very good because I had a very good
grade in my CIA and I did well in the Guided Practice labs. I also
attended open labs and asked guidance from the instructors. I also read
my Medical Surgical and Fundamentals of Nursing books as well as
watching Mosby videos related to oxygen administration. Although I
know how to administer oxygen, know its indications and
contraindications, I still need to know more in depth knowledge and
also I have to have on hand experience caring for patients with
respiratory illnesses who need oxygen administration.

DESCRIBE HOW YOU

WILL APPLY THIS
LEARNING IN YOUR
CURRENT AND
FUTURE NURSING
PRACTICE

I will apply my knowledge about indications and contraindications of

oxygen administration in my future clinical practice. Assessments
should be done always. Respiratory assessment, vital signs and Sp02
should be done so that right dose of oxygen will be administered
correctly so as to avoid complications in the patients condition.
