Demonstrate knowledge and ability to adhere to agency policy and

procedure for safe administration of medication by intramuscular

When I was taught about the routes of medication administration

specifically the IM injection. I learned the proper techniques and how
to landmark the injection sites.

I learned that in giving IM injection there are three things I have to

remember; Z-tract, stabilize, and aspirate. Z-tract method is
recommended because it minimize skin irritation, stabilize to prevent
further tissue injury, and aspirate to make sure needle is not in the
veins. It is very important to know the injection sites appropriate for
each client and also for the nurse to know the gauge of the needle to be
used to ensure medications are delivered properly. My learning
experience in medication administration particularly in giving IM
injection is so meaningful because to have enough knowledge in the
skill you will be doing now or in the future will boost your confidence
and you will be competent. These will prevent errors and harm to the
patient

I rate myself as good because I know how to landmark and chose the
sites appropriate for the client. I practiced at home with my IM kit,
attended open laboratory and most of all I learned it during my guided
practice through the help of our teacher. But I still need improvement
and more practice.

HOW I WILL APPLY

THIS LEARNING IN
NURSING PRACTICE

I will apply this learning in my clinical practice by being always

conscious of the techniques of giving IM injection, locating the
landmarks properly, and choosing the proper site appropriate for each
patient.

knowledge during our guided lab and CIA.
In one of our bed rotations, I was given a
scenario of a COPD patient complaining of
shortness of breath. After doing my
respiratory assessment and taking vital
signs including SpO2 I administered
oxygen at 2L/min because patient showed
signs of hypoxia and hypoxemia. Oxygen
should be administered in low rate because
high flow rate of oxygen is contraindicated
to the patient.
I have learned that hypoxia and hypoxemia

that administration of high flow rate of
oxygen may depress their respiratory drive
and carbon dioxide will accumulate which
may lead to drowsiness and respiratory

CLPNA competency :R-1 Community Health Nursing

Subcategory: R-1-7
Demonstrate knowledge and ability to provide health teaching and
coaching associated with community health nursing.
I have learned to develop a health teaching plan on the prevention of
HPV on 14-19 years old female students in Edmonton in my
assignment 1 in this course. During my teaching intervention, I
informed the target population of my research about current health
issues in the community and ways on how to prevent these issues. I
was able to provide them informations on HPV, its prevention,
transmission, treatment, vaccine and cervical screening.
I have learned that health teaching is effective when a community
health nurse have enough knowledge regarding the health issue. A
community health nurse should demonstrate a good teaching strategy
appropriate to the target population to deliver the health teaching. I
used the group lecture discussion to implement my health teaching
which is effective. I have learned and shared to the target population
that HPV is a virus commonly transmitted sexually. I discussed the use
of condom and vaccine as the prevention. Moreover, HPV cannot be
cured but symptoms like genital warts can be treated by freezing and
topical ointments. Cervical screening and Pap test is essential for early
detection of precancerous lesion and cancer.
This is meaningful to me because giving health teaching is one of
responsibilities of nurse no regardless of where you work. My
experience in this health teaching will guide me to be able to develop
effective teaching plan and use strategies appropriate to the clients to
prevent the health issue.

DONE TO ACHIEVE

I would rate my proficiency as good because I was able to do my

assignment where I demonstrated my knowledge and ability to
provide health teaching to the target population. I read my text book in
community health nursing and in my previous course about health
teaching. I still need more experience and trainings in providing health
teaching by reading more cases and research through journals,
websites, and books to level up my proficiency.

LEARNING IN YOUR
CURRENT AND
FUTURE NURSING
PRACTICE

I will apply my knowledge and ability to provide health teaching in

my future nursing practice as health teaching is one of the
responsibility of a nurse. I will be able to assess the health need of the
community, implement health teaching and evaluate the outcome. So
it is important that I will provide my client with all informations they
need to know to prevent illness and promote health.

DESCRIBE ONE

I learned the signs and symptoms, etiology, DSM V criteria,

biopsychosocial model, risks factors, assessments, psychotherapy,
pharmacotherapy and nursing implications of schizophrenia in my
mental health nursing course. I was able to use this knowledge as
guideline to identify the signs and symptoms of schizophrenia
manifested by the character such as hallucination, delusion,
disorganized speech and disorganized behavior in the The Soloist
film.

WAS MEANINGFUL.

I learned the importance of recognizing the signs and symptoms of

schizophrenia such as hallucination, delusion, disorganized speech and
behavior for early treatment and management to prevent potential harm
to themselves and to others. Psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy are
the common management of schizophrenia but in times of severe
symptoms, hospitalization is necessary. Schizophrenia occurs 1.4 times
more frequently in males than females. Peak age of onset is 20years old
in male and 30 years old in female. I also learned the different types of
schizophrenia such as paranoid, disorganized, catatonic

undifferentiated and residual. Average life with schizophrenia is 10-25

% yrs less than average but through early assessment, diagnosis and
treatment recovery is possible. This is meaningful to me because this
will guide me to do proper assessment and deliver appropriate nursing
intervention that will improve patients quality of life.

with the mental illness by reading books, watching related film,
searching more informations in websites accessing community
supports. I am looking forward to working in a facility with this kind of
mental illness.
