Summary: This article is a summary of the contents of a novel by Emily Toth. The article goes
into details from the book about Kate Chopins life. The article summarizes Kates life, the
conditions of her upbringing, and her involvement in the feminist movements. Kates bucking of
the male antipathy of female independence gives credit to her feminist ideals found in the novel.
The article explains how Kate was a rebel, writing about subjects not typically allowed and how
they were published in a fearless magazine. It describes the critical reviews of her novel prior to
her death and explains how it was negatively reviewed.

Assessment: This article is a very short advertisement for a book, and serves as a source for
finding more information on Kate Chopins life. Although brief, the article gave a lot of insight
about Kates young life, professional life, marriage, and eventual death. Reading through it, this
article gave a lot of information for comparing Edna to Kate and for understanding her reason for
writing this novel. This source is a stepping stone for finding better information. The author is

credible because she bases her information off a book published by the authoritative biographer
of Kate Chopin.

Reflection: This source will be useful in helping expand my ideas, but the most useful aspect is
the fact it directed me to Emily Toth and her biographies on Kate Chopin. The article did its job
of getting me interested in the information contained in the novel, expanding my knowledge of
Kate, and pushing me to find the books. Therefore, this is greatly useful for my paper, even if I
dont use it for direct citations.
