SOIL REMEDIATION, WATER AND AIR TREATMENT

Sector Focus

| Soil remediation, water and air treatment

Flanders was not spared the heavy burden a successful economy places on the environment.

It did not always treat its air, soil and water with a gentle
hand and is now gasping for breath with carbon dioxide,
CO2, fine dust and ozone polluting the air. It faces historically polluted brown fields or residential areas under
threat by a nearby dumping site. In various areas, the soil
and ground water is polluted by environmentally
dangerous substances and the surface water could also
do with less nitrogen, phosphorus and pesticides.
In the environmental area, there is therefore still much
to do, but there is some good environmental news
worth mentioning. For instance, the discharge of harmful
substances such as dioxins and heavy metals has dropped
markedly during the last decade, global water quality
has steadily improved and more and more polluted soil is
inventoried and sanitized.
Due to ever more stringent environmental standards,
industry is now also taking environmental problems
seriously. Environmental considerations have received a
place in business management and more investment has
taken place in environmentally friendly production
processes and emission-limiting technology, according
to a source-directed or end-of-pipe approach.

DESOTEC

There is a very lively demand for environmental technology, both nationally and abroad. Flemish environmental companies are reacting on this demand by offering a
broad quality range in the best available technologies,
which has since been added to the export market too.

This publication offers a sample of the Flemish environmental technology in the soil, air and water areas.
Included are 44 companies, each actively involved in
the care of these elements of nature, in their own field of
specialization.
There are not only technology suppliers involved, but also
service providers such as soil sanitizers, international
environmental contractors and multi-disciplinary environmental consultants. Some of them are real world players,
others are dynamic niche companies.
Then there are the trade bodies, research institutions and
Flemish government organisations in the environment
area too.
Are you confronted by an environmental problem in which
soil, water or air play a key role?
Then read through the company profiles of these Flemish
environmental companies and soon you will see everything so much clearer.

AQUASYSTEMS INTERNATIONAL
The name Aquasystems first appeared in 1975, as Belgian distributor of foreign water treatment equipment, but in
1980 founder John Haegeman made the real breakthrough with his invention of an efficient surface aeration system,
internationally patented and registered under the name AQUA TURBO.
The AQUA TURBO became the basis of a whole range of
aerators/mixers manufactured and sold worldwide by
Aquasystems International nv.
Today, 30 years later, Aquasystems Int. and its branch
Aquaturbo Systems Inc., with their production head
office in Halle (Belgium) and Springdale (Arkansas - USA)
are world famous as suppliers of aerators, mixers and
decanting equipment for water treatment installations.
Both companies have 2 test basins available, where all
produced equipment is thoroughly tested prior to shipment. The basins are also indispensable for research and
development purposes.
Through continuous R&D efforts, the AQUA TURBOrange
is continuously refined, developed and expanded, whether
or not combined with aeration or mixing systems: slow
and fast turning surface aerators, submersible aerators,
bottom aerators, surface mixers and submersible
mixers. Most of these are equipped with the unique
SCREWPELLER. In the decanting range, AQUA

BEKE ENVIRONMENTAL
TECHNOLOGIES
Beke Environmental Technologies bvba (BETE) has been designing gas
scrubbers for more than 15 years. These are used to remove or neutralise
harmful, corrosive, polluting or malodorous components from industrial air
and gas outlets through absorption according to emission standards.
3 types of gas scrubbers are available at BETE, each one
with its own application area, capacity and yield: the
packed column scrubber, the ejector scrubber and the
venturi scrubber.
Each BETE gas scrubber is made to measure, designed
for a specific application in the production process, for a
specific capacity or type of pollutant.
BETE not only designs fully automatic industrial systems,
but also compact laboratory models and on-site test and
pilot plant set-ups.
BETE can also take care of full maintenance of its
scrubbers and offers customers technical environmental
advice.
The applications of the BETE scrubbers are numerous.
Industrial gas emission treatment can no longer be
imagined without them. Especially in the treatment of
two extremely volatile and poisonous components,
ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO), BETE has
solid know-how in store. Of these scrubbers alone the
company has more than 50 in operation worldwide.
As for ammonia pollution, BETE has developed a specific
emergency scrubber apart from a standard range of
production scrubbers on offer.
BETE scrubbers are also important players in the
industrial odour control market, and an extremely high
yield is obtained in the removal of malodorous components from the airflow. For instance, the BETE multi-step
scrubbers can also completely remove from the airflow
the rotten egg odour of hydrogen sulphite (H2S). Apart
from the aforementioned problem gasses, BETE also
has solid experience with about 20 other polluting
components in gas and air.

BIOTERRA
Bioterra nvs activities are aimed at the following
areas: soil remediation, soil recycling and soil and
groundwater treatment.

Since 1996, Bioterra has been active as a soil remediation

centre, where mineral waste substances (such as sweeper
waste, sewer sludge, grit etc.) and polluted soil are
sanitized.
Depending on the type of pollution and the composition,
Bioterra sanitizes the submitted soil either biologically (in
cases of pollution through benzene, fuel oil, aromatic
BTEX-compounds) or physico-chemically (in pollution with
heavy metals and oil types, PAHs, cyanides etc.). The soil
remediation installation for physico-chemical cleaning
was developed in-house and has a processing capacity of
30 to 50 tonnes per hour.
After cleaning, secondary components such as washed
sand and gravel are produced. Through co-operation with
an external soil remediation centre, Bioterra can also take
care of polluted soil in need of thermal cleaning.
Since 2004, the Flemish authorities have accredited
Bioterra as a soil remediation centre and a temporary
storage site. Apart from this, sister company Artilaval bvba
runs a licensed permanent storage site with a capacity of
1 million m3 surplus soil.
Bioterra is VCA**certified and has recently also obtained
ISO 9002 and 14001 certification.
Except for soil remediation, Bioterra also carries out its
own soil and groundwater treatment. Bioterra also does
on-site sanitation without the need for earth moving. For
this, they have a fleet of more than 20 remote-controlled
mobile groundwater treatment installations available with
which the applicable discharge standards can be met.
On-site soil remediation techniques are also possible,
such as selective floating layer removal, pump&treat
groundwater extraction, bioventing/biosparging and soil
air extraction, but also more innovative techniques such as
grafting via bioreactor and on-site breakdown of solvents.
For the treatment of ground water, they make use of
amongst others oil-water separators, sand filters, active
charcoal or bio filters, strip towers or sheet breathers.

Sector Focus

| Soil remediation, water and air treatment

You will notice: a solid professional knowledge and more

than 15 years experience in business makes it possible
for Bioterra to offer total solutions for environmental
technical problems of soil pollution: from the determination and characterization of the pollution to the ultimate
revaluation of the sanitized terrain. That is why the company has already performed dozens of soil and groundwater
sanitizing projects for various industrial clients, both
locally and abroad.

COCO INTERNATIONAL EU
With more than 20 years experience with coconut materials in the preparation of substrate for
mushroom cultivation, Coco International EU nv has developed a range of innovative techniques
and applications for derivatives of coconut fibres.
One of the application areas is undoubtedly small-scale
and individual water treatment. Central to this, is the
concept of the so-called coconut bio bed.
In short, a coconut bio bed is an ecological ornamental
element in the garden with which household waste water
can be treated and recycled. The coconut bio bed is based
on a filter (various layers of coconut fibres: gravel, fibre,
chips, peat, charcoal...) and selected plants, where the
micro-organisms present bring about an aerobic biological
filtering effect on the waste water.
Through the purifying properties of the coconut bio bed,
floating substances, odour, nitrogen compounds and
phosphates are effectively removed from household
waste water.
The bio bed is particularly suitable for homes and companies who do not discharge their waste water into a sewer
connected to a sewerage treatment plant. After all, from
2005 onwards, current environmental standards demand
that these households or companies should take care of
their own wastewater treatment by means of a small-scale
or individual water treatment installation.
But the coconut bio bed also has its advantages even for
those who do have a sewerage system at their disposal. As
it is, Flemish regulations also specify that rain water and
waste water discharges should be kept as separate as
possible. Since the coconut bio bed acts as a rain water
buffer as well as a water treatment system, existing
collective water treatment plants are relieved.

The coconut bio bed is a compact, environment-friendly

and efficient water treatment system and easy to install.
Moreover the bio bed is definitely not an eyesore. After
all, its not a piece of machinery or appliance, but blends
harmoniously into the garden surroundings as a decorative
landscape element.
Coco International has its own demo coconut garden,
where all techniques, applications and derived coconut
fibre products are demonstrated in practice.
The company is convinced that the coconut bio bed concept
has export potential and is marketable internationally as
a DIY kit. For now, however, the company is mainly
carrying out market research within the European Union,
in markets such as France, Germany and Spain.

The Flemish Institute for Technological Research has

looked into the treatment efficiency of the coconut bio bed
in a pilot plant. The results of the analysis are encouraging
and confirm that the bio bed system meets the treatment
standards in place for small-scale and individual water
treatment plant.

DEC
DEC nv, a subsidiary of DEME (Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering), is an environmental
contractor offering total solutions regarding the design, construction, running and management of
environmental projects and clean-up operations.
Thanks to the worldwide integrated application of a wide
range of techniques, DEC totals a consolidated turnover of
more than 120 million. The core activities of DEC are:

chemical as well as thermal processes. The bulk was

treated in Kallo (Belgium), where DEC runs Europes
most advanced ground recycling centre.

Through the connection with its parent company DEME,

DEC has also gained international references in the
treatment and processing of polluted dredger mud.
To this end, DEC has developed various advanced
technologies and is considered an expert in immobilisation
techniques.

soil and groundwater treatment (on site and off site,

both in fixed ground recycling centres as well as
mobile installations) with a wide range of proven
techniques such as physico-chemical soil remediation,
bio-remediation, thermal desorption, air sparging, soil

Environment-friendly dredging techniques.

Given DECs multi-disciplinary approach and its long-term

developed an important niche regarding the development
of brownfields, viz. industrial sites where development is
hampered by historic soil pollution.
A brown field approach must be supported by a multidisciplinary approach which goes beyond the use of
specialized clean-up techniques. Factors such as spatial
planning, zoning, financing and risk management are
also called on.
This is how DECs know-how contributed to the clean-up of
a former gas factory in the Dublin Docklands. This project,
valued at 50 million and one of the biggest clean-up
projects in Europe, implied demolition and levelling works,

DEEP GREEN
Deep Green nv is an independent company, specializing in the thermal clean-up
of polluted soil.
Before starting up in Europe in 1999, the company had
been active in the United States for ten years. With the
takeover of an American soil remediation company, TPS
Technologies, Deep Green became the world leader in the
area of thermal treatment of polluted soil.
Annually, Deep Green cleans approximately 800 000
tonnes of polluted soil. Since 1989, the company has
successfully carried out more than 200 soil remediation
projects. Over this period, it cleaned over 9 million tonnes
of soil, either in their fixed installations (in the US and the
French Rouen) or by its fleet of mobile units. On-site
cleaning took care of more than one million tonnes.
Deep Green treated soil polluted by hydrocarbons (originating from petro-chemical, industrial coal chemistry,
etc.) such as benzene, diesel oil, kerosene, cyanides, tar,
explosives, chlorine compounds, BTEX, PAHs...).

With many years experience in soil remediation projects

in the US and Europe, Deep Green effortlessly operates in
the most divergent of regulatory environments.
Deep Green has clients in the petrochemical industry,
utility companies, various industrial sectors, environmental authorities, real estate developers, etc. There is
no shortage of names on their list of clients. For instance,
in the US there is Shell, BP, Exxon, Conoco Phillips,
Chevron, Arco, etc.
Some of the European references are Arcelor,
Charbonnages de France, Gaz de France, Total, Peugeot,
Eternit, Eiffage, Arcadis, Serpol with operations in
Belgium, France, Spain, Norway, the Czech Republic
and Italy.

The treatment technique used is that of thermal

adsorption, removing the pollution from the soil in 2 steps
through heating and evaporation. To limit harmful
discharge, the released polluted gasses are further
treated (by de-dusting, afterburning, gas scrubbing,
filtration, etc.).
Thermal adsorption has a number of advantages: a
cost-effective technique, optimum instant added value
enabling the soil to be re-used as natural soil and a
guaranteed (pure) final result, relieving the client of his
long-term liability.
In its fixed and mobile installations of Deep Green, the
most stringent treatment procedures are applied. They
also meet the strictest safety and environmental
regulations, amongst others regarding fluid density,
discharge, etc.

DESOTEC
Desotec nv, established in 1990, is a specialised manufacturer and supplier of activated charcoal. The company not
only offers the activated charcoal as raw material, but also takes care of the engineering of activated-charcoal
installations for the treatment of liquids and gasses.
The principle of activatedcharcoal filtration is based on
the absorbent capacity of the
activated charcoal, made of
wood, carbon, peat and
coconut fibres. Activated charcoal is used in the water, liquid,
air and gas treatment areas in
order to remove organic components.

Desotec developed the Mobicon system, a mobile container for activated charcoal absorption, used on site for
specific industrial water applications, e.g. in tertiary water
treatment, water re-use, soil remediation, leachate treatment

The activated charcoal and the

activated-charcoal filters of
Desotec are high-quality products, manufactured to the
highest standards and specifications. This is guaranteed by
an internal quality care system covering the entire production process. Tonnes of activated charcoal are supplied to
satisfied Desotec customers on a daily basis.
As a raw material, Desotec supplies active charcoal in various guises : granular, extruded, chemically impregnated
and in powder form.

With the Oxycon system, Desotec is also active in the

aired activated charcoal filtration, an often applied water
treatment technique.

A selection of the most marketable applications: waste

water and groundwater treatment, COD reduction, colour
and odour removal, drink water production, pesticide
removal, treatment of process water, de-chlorination, deozonising, purifying of food, chemicals, beverages, air
purification, VOC and TOC removal from the air, BTEX
elimination, flue gas treatment, process gas treatment,
gas masks, etc.

In short: for most of your treatment project requirements,

Desotec has an activated charcoal solution lined up for you.

ECODIS
After more than 7 years of top technological research and co-operation with universities, specialised labs and
drinking water companies, in 2003, the company Ecodis nv initiated the commercialisation of its eponymous
revolutionary process to disinfect water without the use of chemicals.

Ecodis is an electrolytic disinfection process via anodic

oxidation, using a number of components from the tap
water itself to generate oxidants. In so doing, Ecodis
instantly kills off all incoming germs. The appliance also
generates a lasting disinfecting effect in the water,
ensuring treatment of the entire water system.
Not only does Ecodis completely destroy the biofilm,
viz. the slimy deposits of micro-organisms present in the
water system, but it also prevents the biofilm from
regrowing.
Ecodis has been thoroughly tested and compared to
current disinfection methods for drinking water such as
treatment with chlorine, chlorine dioxide, UV-radiation or
thermal disinfection (currently used to combat Legionella
pneumophyllia).
In similar measurements according to various criteria
(such as durability of the effect, bio film removal, efficiency of the disinfection, energy consumption, safety, corrosiveness, usability, etc.) Ecodis scored systematically
better than its rival disinfecting techniques.

tion of industrial process water, treatment of swimming

pool water, water treatment in the medical sector, in the
agricultural and horticultural, cattle-breeding and
glass-house cultivation sectors and for the removal of
e.g. cyanide, iron and ammonia.
Ecodis stands for a total approach and works to special
demands: apart from development, the company also
takes care of production, installation, advice, guidance,
maintenance, on-line monitoring and remote interactive
system control. From the beginning, Ecodis has endeavoured to expand its clientele, and has more than
once differentiated into the field of innovation, winning it
the Aquatech Innovation Award and a presence at the
IFEST Innovation Pavilion.
As for its priority markets, Ecodis has set its sights on
the neighbouring countries and on the Netherlands in
particular.

Disinfection with Ecodis is environment-friendly, costeffective, takes little energy and is totally harmless to
health. This is exactly why it is such a particularly efficient
solution for effective water hygiene.
Drinking water, disinfected with Ecodis, effortlessly
complies with European drinking water standards.
The Ecodis applications in the area of disinfection and
keeping water streams germ-free, mainly concentrate on
drinking water and wastewater treatment applications:
preventive drinking water disinfection, destruction and
prevention of Legionella pneumophillia and other
biological infections in hospitals, preparation and disinfec-

ENVISAN
Envisan nv is the environment subsidiary of the internationally renowned dredger group Jan De Nul. Its core
activities rest on 4 pillars: site sanitation, soil remediation, sludge treatment and landfill.
Because Envisan offers all of these activities under one
roof, they can take on any environmental problem. Hence,
time and again, the company emerges as a solid partner for
complex projects such as the sanitation and rehabilitation
of brownfields, both nationally as well as internationally.
With location sanitation of soil, ground water and soil air
treatment, Envisan applies (on site and off site) a wide
range of clean-up techniques: soil air extraction and

For its on-site sanitation, Envisan uses mobile soil remediation installations for the most divergent types of soil and
pollution (both classic pollutants such as mineral oils,
heavy metals, poly-aromatic hydrocarbons and substances
such as TBT, PCBs etc. which are more alien to the
environment).
In the domain of soil remediation, Envisan has its own
ground recycling centres where biological, thermal and
physico-chemical cleaning process are applied. In its
temporary storage sites, re-usable soil is stored awaiting
a new destination.
Envisan also uses the necessary immobilisation and
stabilizing techniques for the treatment of problem soil
and sludge which cannot be cleaned.
Moreover, it masters any technique like sludge drying,
mobile dehydration, pooling, solidification and immobilisation, anaerobic fermentation, construction of buffer basins,
etc. Envisan can valorise sludge as a secondary raw
material, as a soil improver or for other useful applications
such as piling and filler soil, for dyke work, etc.

indispensable links in their eventual processing.
This is one of Ipsam Internationals major assets : the
vacuum and high-pressure installations are designed
and constructed in 3D, entirely on site. Ipsam International
also has its own engineering department, which closely
co-operates with its customers, from the design to the
construction stages. This continuous synergy with the
client has often led to the development of new applications.
Ipsam Internationals environmental range comprises:
vacuum vehicles for clearing and transport of sludge
and liquids;
sewer spray trucks and high-pressure vehicles (up to
3000 bar);
spray trucks equipped with water cannon;
combined vacuum/high-pressure trucks, eventually
with water recovery;
vehicles for cleaning and aspirating sewage drain holes
and swirls with or without hydrostatic propulsion;

MODEL ENGINEERING
Model Engineering nv (ME) is a small, but inventive consultancy and engineering firm with 30 years of international expertise in advanced water and
waste water treatment, sustainable water management (water cycles) and
green energy (biogas) for customers in both the industrial and public sectors.

ME cooperates with local and international R&D institutions, research consultancy firms, environmental contractors and companies specializing in water treatment, waste
water treatment and energy production.

For the effective (re)design and use of water cycles

(production, distribution, use, treatment and re-use) and
installations for waste water treatment and biogas
production, ME applies its unique MODEL approach. This
knowledge technology results in the development of
highly eco-efficient process technology such as AS+ and
5D water management.
AS+ boosts the efficiency level of activated sludge wastewater treatment plants to 99% and cuts back to 50% on
energy consumption and on sludge wastage by introducing
new bio processes, selection/regeneration and adaptive
process control.
AS+ pays itself back relatively quickly and allows water
re-use. Due to the high eco-efficiency, AS+ was selected
for a Belgo-Chinese R&D project on sustainable wastewater treatment for re-use.
The 5D water control technology reduces drinking water
consumption in the production process, cuts back on the
production of wastewater (even up to a zero discharge) and
decreases energy consumption. 5 different angles are
taken into account: water demand, multiple use, regeneration for re-use, redesign and integration. Apart from a
marked water saving, numerous industrial sectors can
generate a great deal of sustainable energy from their
wastewater.
Except for advice, technology, design and engineering, ME
also supplies specialised project services (on-site investigation, testing, project planning, detailed engineering, tendering, project supervision, installation, start-up, adjustment, training and operational support).

POLYMETAL
Polymetal is a versatile polyester and metal construction company, which has earned recognition since 1969
as a constructor of silos and tanks, systems for treating bulk goods, stables and prefab steel buildings.
But the company seems to feel at home in more peculiar markets as well, for the city of Antwerp once even
commissioned it to build a prefab mobile prison...
The environmental sector
also features prominently
on the Polymetal activities
list : it supplies installations for lime treatment
of sludge, HDPE tanks
for storing sludge and
manure, synthetic covers
for
water
treatment
plants.
And yet, the companys major environmental activity is in
biological air treatment and odour prevention. Polymetal
developed and patented a vertical biofilter under the name
of BI-MAS. It is a deodorizing tower, more than 100 of
which have started their operation, mainly in solarpowered sludge-drying plants.
Polymetal manufactures BI-MAS -filters with 5 different
air capacities, ranging from 1 800 to 20 000 m3/h. The
biological filter material consists mainly of tree bark, but
the mix can be adapted to the type of gas to be removed
from the discharged air. Filters are standard equipped with
a two-part humidifying system to remove both hydrophilic
as well as hydrophobic gasses.
Even though BI-MAS is a compact system, it can handle
large volumes of air or discharged gas which is fed through
the bio filter and purified along the way.
As for odour treatment, removal rates are obtained from
60 to over 95 % for volatile organic substances, sulphur
components, ammonia, amines, sulphur hydroxide,
mercaptans, ketones, depending on the composition of
the gas emission and the condition of the biofilter material.

29

Sector Focus

| Soil remediation, water and air treatment

The BI-MAS bioreactor is frequently used in set-ups such

as sludge drying, composting, waste processing and water
treatment. For the latter application, industrial clients
often tend to be polyester resin processors, chemical companies, companies operating spray painting booths, etc.
For agricultural and intensive cattle breeding operations,
a twin air scrubber filter is currently available with a
capacity of 40 000 m3/h, removing ammonia as well as
odour from the stable air.
Polymetal is not only active in its own country, but has
since built up various references in France and The
Netherlands. The BI-MAS is also aimed at the German
market.

SANOTEC
Sanotec nv is specialized in the design and construction of public and industrial water treatment works,
sludge treatment plant and air treatment installations. The company is the environmental leg of
the Vanhout construction group, in turn a member of the Besix group of companies.
Sanotec masters a wide range of waste water treatment
technologies and prepares the most efficient solution for
every sanitation problem in co-operation with the
customer: mechanical pre-treatment, activated sludge
treatment plant, biological nutrient removal, physicochemical treatment, biorotors, sludge-processing, gas
treatment, membrane filtration techniques, etc.
For biodegradable waste water, Sanotec has developed a
range of PAMCO biorotors with a diameter from 2 to up to
4 metres for small- to large-scale installations. Since
1979, Sanotec has installed dozens of similar rotors in
treatment plants worldwide, ranging from a population
equivalence of 300 to 220 000 (IE).
Compared to activated sludge systems and biofilters,
biorotors offer numerous advantages: compactness, low
energy consumption, minimal maintenance, process
control not necessary, less and better-quality sludge and
improved effluent quality. Biorotors are commonly used
in the food industry, the vegetable-processing industry, in
slaughterhouses and the meat-processing sector, paper
mills, the (petro)chemical and pharmaceutical industries
and is groundwater treatment applications.
For the full mineralization of household and industrial
water treatment sludge, Sanotec has entered into a partnership with the Polish company, Pyro-Kat. Together they
developed the "PYRO-KAT" technology in the 1995 to 1998
period. This technology is based on quasi-pyrolysis at low
temperature and gassing, with catalytic oxidation and
absorptive treatment of the released residual gasses and
recuperation of the surplus heat.
The unmistakable advantage of this technique is a 15- to
20-times reduction of the sludge volume, a complete
dehydration, deodorising and an effective destruction of
bacteria and viruses.

from the earliest stages in the 70s. It constructed
entirely new sewage treatment plants, but also concentrated on the extension and renovation of existing
stations. For smaller communities (schools, retirement
homes, shelters, etc.) Stabo also designs small-scale
waste water treatment plant using techniques such as
biorotors, reed bed treatment systems
Industrial water treatment : large industrial water
consumers in the food and textile industry where the
first to call on the know-how of Stabo for their water
treatment needs 25 years ago. The list of accomplishments in the industry has since increased impressively.
On a daily basis, new industrial treatment plants are
built, extended or renovated with BAT for the removal of
nutrients, sludge dehydration, reduction of sludge
production, biogas production, filtration, water re-use,
etc.

For years, Stabo has applied BAT to sludge and manure

processing too: from sludge dams for condensation
and dehydration (centrifuge, chamber filter press) to
fermentation and drying.
Finally, Stabo also gives specific environmental advice
and carries out investigation assignments on water,
sludge and air treatment, company water management, re-use of treated wastewater

Stabo finds their most important references with environmental authorities and in companies from various industrial branches such as e.g. the food and dairy industries,
the chemical and textile sectors, breweries (etc. Interbrew,
Alken-Maes, but also New Belgian Brewing Co. in Fort
Collins, Colorado (US), a joint project with companies
Sanotec and See:Water, both appearing elsewhere in this
publication).

STADSBADER-FLAMAND
Ever since its foundation in 1946, the family business Stadsbader-Flamand nv (SBF) has built up a
solid reputation as a contractor for public works and industrial infrastructure projects.
Since 1997, the company has been carrying out soil remediation projects and in this particular area it has made a
name for itself across Belgium with dozens of clients from
the industry, trade and public sector.
For all kinds of soil pollution (with mineral oils, heavy
metals, volatile organic chlorine compounds, BTEX, PAHs,
chlorinated hydrocarbons, etc.) SBF offers the most
suitable clean-up techniques, of which they control a broad
spectrum: from excavating to the most innovative on-site
techniques. SBF operates dozens of mobile soil treatment
installations, from traditional pump&treat plant, oil/water
separators and an activated-charcoal filtration unit to
advanced, remote-controlled systems with compressed
air injection and soil vapour extraction.
SBF also has a licensed temporary storage site for
excavated soil and an accredited site for soil treatment,
where polluted soil can be washed physico-chemically or
biologically cleaned (e.g. via biopiling).
SBFs main asset is the fact that it can offer their clients a
comprehensive services package: from demolition work,
excavation, clean-up, temporary storage of excavated soil,
biological and physico-chemical soil remediation, production of (secondary) building and replenishment materials
and their finishing. This often makes them the partner of
choice for the performance of integral sanitation projects.
Fuel stations are notorious black spots in soil pollution.
Geared at this particular target group, the company set up
a specialist Petrol Stations division.
It designs, renovates and sanitizes fuel stations that are
liable to be sanitized and brings them in line with Flemish
environmental standards.

TERRECO
Terreco bvba is a company specialized in the complete, effective, sustainable and cost-saving cleaning of
contaminated soil and ground water. In the 90s, along with the chemical giant DSM, the founders of Terreco
stood at the cradle of PuriSoil, a unique and patented on-site soil remediation technology that has
more than often proven itself over the last ten years.

The Purisoil clean-up technique is basically a variation of

the airsparging technique where compressed air is
injected into the soil. A specially composed bio-active layer
is mixed with the top layer of soil, which strongly improves
its biological activity and the airflow in the soil. The
injected compressed air rises up through the soil, taking
the pollutants with it along to the surface where they are
completely decomposed in the bio layer and converted into
CO2 and water without any harmful discharges.
Using this technology, soil and ground water can be sanitized at the same time, across an extensive polluted area.
This technology has proven its effectiveness as a quick
working soil remediation technique for the removal of
volatile organic compounds such as benzene and toluene.
Compared to current on-site soil remediation techniques
such as soil water extraction or soil air extraction,
Purisoil is an alternative which is at the same time both
technologically and ecologically superior and generally
also economically more attractive. Due to the unique
pricing structure of the PuriSoil technology, a clean-up
is generally also cheaper compared to other methods. In
its remediation projects, Terreco offers a result-based
guarantee preferably at a fixed price with maximum
security for the client.
For Terreco, a pioneering and successful clean-up
achievement undoubtedly was the so-called Project
Rotterdam, where in a strongly contaminated area,
130 000 m3 of soil contaminated by volatile solvents were
cleaned up completely up to a 13 metre depth within
2 years. Since then, Terreco has reached similar results
with PuriSoil in municipal and industrial environments.
The PuriSoil clean-up technology has also been
thoroughly tested in practice and has proven its effectiveness in numerous and variously contaminated locations
in both industrial and residential environments: petrochemical companies, industrial areas, fuel stations and
tank parks, but also in residential areas. For each one of
these applications, references abound. More information

THE SNIFFERS
The Sniffers nv (TS), established in 1991, is a 100 % Belgian service provider nurturing the ambition to become
the leader in Europe in the area of control of volatile organic emissions (Fugitive Emission Monitoring),
flare emission (Flare Emission Monitoring) and inspection of pipelines (Pipeline Integrity Inspection).

Volatile organic emissions in the atmosphere are often due

to leaking components in an industrial production process.
This can result in raw material wastage, explosion and fire
hazard, environmental pollution or health problems at
work. The legislator is also getting stricter in the emission
reduction level and is bound to demand preparation of
control programmes for volatile emissions.
This is precisely where a company like The Sniffers comes
in: after all, with 11 years expertise in the development
and performance of turn-key LDAR projects (Leak
Detection and Repair) the company has since traced
around 2 000 000 possible sources of leakage.
With their proprietary SFEMP-software (Sniffers Fugitive
Emissions Monitoring Program) information collected on
emissions is processed, reported on and implemented as
a management tool for similar future LDAR projects
within the company.
Leaks in the production process often cause uncontrolled
flare emissions of volatile organic compounds. A striking
example: TS detected leaks wasting around 100 000 kg of
raw material through flare emissions on an annual basis.
With its Flare Emission Monitoring Program, TS offers the
solution and takes care of complete LDAR projects and
processing their results with its own FLAME software.
TS also specializes in the detection of coating defects in
underground pipelines with the best available techniques
(Pearson survey, DCVG, CIP, GPS mapping, soil resistivity
measurement, cathode protection signal measurement,
resistance checks on isolation joints). Other areas of
expertise are leak detection in pipelines by gas leak detection vehicles and via techniques such as Flame Ionisation
Detection (FID), Photo Ionisation Detection (PID), ultrasonic detection and by sniffer dogs, soil depth measurements and tracking of pipelines.
Around emissions, TS has performed monitoring assignments for all giant companies from the chemical, petro-

TOP ANTWERPEN
The main purpose of the Flemish Regulation on Soil Remediation (Dutch acronym : VLAREBO),
which took effect on January, 1st of 2004 with regard to earth-moving operations, is to prevent
the spreading of soil pollution, e.g. by guaranteeing the traceability of excavated soil.
Excavated soil which is not immediately given an particular
destination, may be stored in a temporary storage site for
soil, a so-called TOP (after its Dutch acronym).
TOP Antwerpen nv, a partnership between SITA
Remediation nv and De Dijcker nv, is a leader in that area
in the Antwerp region.
The transportation of soil at TOP Antwerpen is mainly done
by road, but large consignments of soil may also be
shipped by barge.
That TOP Antwerp should be established on a water-bound
site in the Antwerp port (quay 403b) may therefore be
considered a major asset.
On its 2.2 ha site, the company provides a storage capacity
of around 50 000 m3, 1 ha of which is covered over. TOP
Antwerp has the necessary infrastructure available to treat
polluted soil the right way. The property was given a waterproof surface which meets the strictest environmental
requirements.
Various types of soil originating from different activities
can be stored with TOP Antwerp, ranging from nonpolluted and suspect soil to effectively polluted soil.
TOP Antwerp offers covered storage space for nonpolluted soil, but the communal grounds can also be used.
Of possibly polluted risk soil, samples are taken and based
on this analysis, TOP Antwerp determines a suitable and
economically viable processing and/or cleaning technique.
On behalf of the client, they also try to find a permanent
market for this soil.
For polluted soil, the most suitable processing method is
suggested upon analysis. Whereas TOP Antwerp can
take care of biological soil remediation itself, its parent
company and accredited soil remediation centre, SITA
Remediation, which guarantees optimum clean-up and
processing according to the legal requirements, tackles
pollution by other cleaning processes.

After processing, TOP Antwerp provides the client with

a processing certificate and it can possibly offer the soil
to third parties for various applications : as replenishment
or embankment soil, for dyke work, etc. All batches of
soil are provided with the required certification (technical
report and soil control report) for a well determined re-use
with a guaranteed traceability.

VANDEZANDE
Vandezande bvba manufactures various mechanical constructions for pumping stations and water treatment
plants. Its core products which the company designs and manufactures entirely on its own, are undoubtedly
the screw pumps, known the world over.

Vandezande belongs to the worlds top manufacturers in

this niche and globally supplies its screw pumps with a
capacity ranging from of 10 to 10 000 litres per second.
Vandezande can also effortlessly take on the really big
jobs : screw pumps with a diameter of up to 5.5 metres
and up to 25 metres long, have since become part of the
standard range.
It is therefore not surprising that Vandezande still has the
worlds largest screw pumps to its name.

and down through the grill and discharging the collected

coarse parts. Similar rake grids, a rotating version of which
is available on the market, are often mounted at the inlet of
water treatment plants and pumping stations.
Furthermore, Vandezande manufactures a number of
appliances dealing with water treatment and control, such
as rotating biofilter distributors, electromechanical sluice
gates, valve doors, moving rake classifiers and complete
electro mechanical equipment for pumping stations.

Screw pumps are used in the following areas: in water

treatment installations for influent and effluent management and for sludge recirculation, installations for the
drainage of wetlands and irrigation pumping stations.

Vandezande has been active abroad for dozens of years

now, but listing all of its international accomplishments,
would be impossible. Far easier would it be to say that it
has screw pumps, scraper bridges or sludge thickening
units installed in the remotest corners of the globe.

Vandezande screw pumps have a number of unmistakable

assets : a high yield and low energy cost, an extremely long
lifespan, optimum capacity by adjusting the number of
revolutions and a constant capacity at variable water
supply. The pumps can handle heavily polluted water
without grids, may run dry and are harmless to the fish
population.
Apart from the standard range, screw pumps are also

WELDERS FILTRATION TECHNOLOGY

Each filtration application is unique and professional filtration is a trade : we at Welders Filtration Technology nv
(WFT) know this only too well.

WFT has been leading the field in the area of filtration

technology since 1982. It has been providing fixed and
mobile filter and belt filter presses for treating industrial
and sewage sludge.
WFT manufactures two types of filter presses: chamber
filter presses and membrane filter presses. In both types,
the liquid sludge is pumped into (multiple) areas
(chambers) made up of two plates. By increasing the
pressure on the sludge, the liquid portion is forced through
a filter cloth. The sludge liquor flows away and the solid
section settles on the cloth, forming a filter cake which
is then discharged. The dry matter content of the filter
cake can sometimes be as much as 70 %.
Membrane filter presses are basically chamber filter
presses with integrated post pressure technology ensuring
even stronger dewatering of the sludge and the filter cake
lump to become to end up even drier.
WFT also constructs belt filter presses. In this type, the
sludge is pressed and dehydrated between two parallel
filtration belts. Dry matter content of over 25% for
sewage sludge and more than 60% for industrial sludge
can be achieved.
Finally, WFT also builds thickening tables and drums to
reduce the sludge volume to a maximum for further
dehydration with filter or belt presses.
Each of WFTs filter installations are built to order: from
small, manually-operated to large, fully-automatic,
computer-controlled installations.
Apart from the standard range, WFT also builds custommade presses in special designs, such as mobile filter
presses to process sludge on site, or presses operating in
conditions of extreme pressure or temperature, acid proof
or explosion resistant. New are the presses especially
developed for dredger mud.

WFT offers a complete services package: from investigation and preparatory studies, design, construction, test
phase, mounting and assembly (often in very hard-toreach sites) to revision and maintenance work.
Worldwide, over 600 filter presses by WFT have been
installed in various sectors and for different applications:
flue gas treatment, soil remediation, water treatment,
mining, the textile sector, glass and metal industry, the
pharmaceutical, food and beverages industries (e.g. for the
production of sugar, starch, vegetable oils, wine and beer).

YDROTEQ
Ydroteq nv has developed, manufactured and marketed water treatment appliances and filters aimed the
household and professional market since 1990.
Apparently, Ydroteq is putting a great deal of effort into
developing innovative products in the water treatment area
judging by the number of unique products the company
has since put on the market: the Ydronet water filter, the
combined Ydronet water filter/pressure limiter, the
Ydrostop water leakage limiter and the Ydronet DOS
dosage equipment.
The standard Ydroteq range comprises the Ydronet water
filter and the twin appliance, the Ydronet water filter/
pressure limiter combined. The auto-cleaning water filter
protects the installation against pollutants in the water.
As a result, the lifespan of taps, pipes and sanitary appliances are markedly prolonged, wear and tear and corrosion is prevented and the drink water quality improved.
In the combined Ydronet water filter/pressure stabilizer,
two unique functions combine in a well-considered concept : the appliance ensures a constant water pressure
while at the same time filtering the water with a
self-cleaning filtration centrifugal system.
Two unique appliances which Ydrotec believes to have
international sales potential, are the Ydrostop water
leakage limiter and the Ydronet DOS water treatment
appliance.
The Ydrostop water leakage limiter immediately blocks the
water supply in case of a sudden drop in the water supply.
In lasting water loss (small leaks, open taps, etc.) Ydrostop
cuts off the water supply after a pre-determined time lap
and thus prevents unnecessary water consumption. The
principle on which Ydrostop operates is that of the detection of pressure differences occurring in the water system.
The showpiece of the Ydroteq range is undoubtedly the
Ydronet DOS, a unique appliance against scaling and
corrosion in water installations. It is a hydrodynamic
dosage appliance without electricity mixing an effective
dose of silicate-polyphosphate powder into the water
stream. Piping and sanitary installations are protected
against scaling and corrosion by a protective film on the
inside of the pipes, heating elements, etc.

47

Apart from that, Ydronet DOS also breaks down the scale
already present. The treatment process complies with the

export range. Internationally, Ydroteq operates with
distributors in Italy, France, Spain, the United Kingdom,

by sound and vibrations. All these companies have one characteristic in common : they use a lot of technology
and provide technological solutions devised in house. Agorias trilingual Environment directory comprehensively
lists all services, products and technologies from these companies.
Moreover, one can contact Agorias International Business Development department. Within this department,
a number of export clubs have been established, including the Environmental club. In it, companies are
represented that are looking for foreign trade opportunities in the environmental domain. Mainly EU and
Eastern European countries are targeted but even on markets further afield, opportunities are looked into.

O.V.B.
The pollution of soil and ground water is an environmental problem of the first order demanding a broad
set of solutions.
Member companies of the Flemish Soil Remediation Association have developed a set of methods and techniques
which have proven their worth on the level of soil remediation in general, and soil treatment in particular.
These are mostly technologies and organisational measures which, according to the principle of the best available
techniques, have been tried and tested and proved their effectiveness, also from an economical point of view.
However, research into optimization and renewal never ceases : difficult soil types and complex pollution
demand effective solutions too. The development and improvement of soil remediation techniques are just one of
the aims of OVB, as well as a continued effort to ever improve the quality of projects carried out.
OVB obviously fends for its members and their interests, most of which appear in this publication, but it also
provides information and advice to other people.
To be able to effectively fulfil its role, this professional organisation co-operates with related organisations,
government institutions, soil remediation specialists, soil management organisations and industry and trade
representatives.
OVB is a prominent member of the advisory group which developed a code of practice for soil remediation
operations under the auspices of OVAM, the Public Waste Agency of Flanders. This so-called Achillesprotocol
aims to achieve a consistent and reliable performance of on-site soil remediation works, both from an
environmental angle or from a quality and safety point of view.
Achilles is definitely more than just a summary of various remediation and treatment techniques, or the basic
conditions of good craftsmanship a (sub)contractor must abide by. Key to all remediation projects is an analysis
of the risks involved in each specific project, taking into account the production means of the soil remediation
contractor involved.
Not only does this preventative system anticipate an integral approach in the preparatory stages, but also in
control during and upon completion of the works. Achilles should therefore not be looked upon as just a collection
of procedures wrapped up in legal obligations, but as an instrument that has proven its practical use on site.

TNAV
TNAV is the acronym in Dutch for Thematic Network for Waste Water Treatment Technology of Flanders, a nonprofit organisation set up in 2003 by Belgian top suppliers of process technology in the water treatment sector.
TNAV currently boasts 70 members. Among them are not just technology suppliers and engineering companies, but also centres of knowledge and government institutions professionally
involved in water treatment, each from their own specific specialisms and assignments.
TNAVs main purpose is improving the competitive edge of its member companies, especially
on the foreign market.
It does so by promoting Flemish environmental technology abroad, by informing its members
of possible projects, by stimulating synergies and operating as a network link to foreign
customer potential.
TNAV also promotes collective innovation stimulation (e.g. through thematic workshops) and
acts as a technology guard by investigating the latest international trends in the water
treatment area, passing on to its members the information gathered.
Internationally, TNAV is now aiming for expansion into the new EU member countries in
Central and Eastern Europe struggling to meet EU environmental standards. Know-how and
experience of the TNAV companies will undoubtedly help these countries tackle their
water-related problems.
Experienced as they are in solving such problems in Europe and beyond, TNAV companies do
not shrink back from working as subcontractors themselves or from striking co-operation agreements with local
environmental contractors.
All TNAV companies boast exceptional expertise in the entire range of water treatment techniques, from physicochemical to aerobic or anaerobic treatment, sand and activated-charcoal filtration to the latest and most advanced
membrane processes or innovative techniques for sludge-processing.
Many TNAV companies also look further than just water treatment and cover the entire water cycle with process
water preparation, drinking water production, water recycling and water re-use.
In short: clients from any industrial branch, from the authorities and the agricultural sector can call on TNAV
companies for comprehensive solutions on the treatment, purification, preparation, re-use, recycling and saving
of (waste)water.
On a regular basis, TNAV companies closely co-operate with top universities and research centres and play a major
role in environmental research projects. That is why they are in the driving seat when confronted with a broad
spectrum of waste water problems, making use of the best available and scientifically underpinned techniques.

VITO
VITO is the largest independent research centre in Flanders in the
fields of energy, the environment and materials. Based on high-quality
research and development, VITO conducts customer-oriented research
and develops sustainable innovative technological products and processes.
Through its unique information platform (www.emis.vito.be) it also gathers and distributes key information
on energy and the environment in Flanders. Moreover, VITO inventories and evaluates the best available
techniques (BAT), by industrial sector and formulates BAT recommendations on behalf of the authorities and
companies in Flanders.
As a preferential research partner for the authorities, VITO mostly carries out research for policy issues.
It also carries out contract research for industrial customers, or helps them implement environmentally and
economically sound technologies in their production processes.
VITO closely co-operates with universities and research institutes both at home and abroad. Thus it keeps
abreast of recent technological developments in its research areas and can, in turn, pass on this expertise to
its own clients.
VITO also provides professional assistance to the authorities and industry with water management, soil
remediation and air treatment.
Hence VITO is the Flemish reference laboratory for environmental analysis and measurement of waste
substances, soil, air and water. In these areas it assists the authorities with policy and regulations, develops
specialized analysis and measurement techniques and carries out integrated assessments of environmental
pollution and (eco)toxicology.
VITO develops and valorises new industrial technologies in soil remediation, (waste)water treatment, sludge
processing, air treatment and industrial process optimization.
Being the reference centre for soil and ground water research, VITO has developed soil and ground water
remediation techniques, both off site (bioremediation, pump-and-treat techniques, biosensors, etc.), and on
site (soil vapour extraction, bioventing, phyto-remediation, natural attenuation, reactive and biological barriers,...).
For that purpose VITO also has the necessary (mobile) testing, measuring and clean-up equipment available
on a laboratory or semi-industrial scale.
As for the element of water, VITO concentrates on sustainable water use. It has developed techniques for both
waste water treatment (physico-chemical, biological and electro-chemical techniques as well as membrane
filtration processes...) and water re-use (membrane bioreactors, integrated systems...).
Where air treatment is concerned, VITO conducts research on innovative technologies, optimizes air treatment
and odour prevention techniques, selects the best available treatment techniques (gas scrubbing, biogas
scrubbing, activated-charcoal absorption, biological filtration, afterburning, condensation and membrane
separation, photo-oxidation and ionisation, micro scrubbing...) and conducts complete odour studies. VITO
also assists the authorities and industry in drafting emission reduction strategies.

FLANDERS: A CLEAN SWEEP

Belgium is a federal state in which the communities and regions have their own legislative
and executive powers.
The protection of water, air and soil in Flanders, for instance, falls within the remit of the Flemish government.
The same applies to waste management, the protection against sound pollution and the supervision of
dangerous, unhealthy and polluting industries.
Within the Flemish environmental administration, a number of agencies and departments are in some way
involved in the execution of the Flemish environmental policy.
Here you will find those closest involved in the care of soil, water and air.
As polluted soil is considered as waste, it therefore belongs to the Public Waste Agency of Flanders (OVAM),
in charge of drafting and enforcing the overall strategic project on soil remediation.
OVAM also takes care of the certification of soil remediation specialists, soil management organizations,
ground recycling centres and temporary storage sites. It also drafts standard procedures for soil remediation
projects, develops the codes of good practice for soil remediation techniques and helps to develop policies on
brownfield development.
Furthermore there is VMM, the Flemish Environmental Agency for Water and Air. VMM measures and controls
the quality of surface water, prepares general water treatment programmes and drafts investment programmes
for the (re)construction of sewage networks, sewage treatment plants and small-scale water treatment
installations.
By the way, it is the Aquafin nv company (www.aquafin.be) which is assigned the design, construction, financing
and management of the infrastructure for sewage treatment in the Flemish region.
In the area of air pollution, VMM takes care of measurements, collection, analysis and processing of all data on
polluting emissions in Flanders.
To this end, it controls one of the densest and best-performing air measurement networks in Europe. With
so-called imission measurements, VMM also carries out research on the presence of harmful substances in
ambient air. It also plays a steering role in determining emission reduction policies.
Finally, Aminal should also be mentioned, the central environment administration of the Flemish government,
which involves in environmental licensing policy, sustainable (ground) water management, setting standards for
emissions and air quality, integrated emission reduction programmes, drafting measures against odour pollution
and climate disturbances. Beside these activities, it also prepares, supports and co-ordinates air pollution
policies in Flanders.

FLANDERS, AN EXPORTING REGION

Over the years, the notion of exporting seems to have become all but synonymous with
Flanders. Indeed, the region, encompassing the northern part of Belgium, is firmly
geared at exporting high-quality products and services to all corners of the globe.
Flanders more than holds its own against all major nations contending in the arena of world trade.
In 2004, for instance, Germanys 914.8 billion USD worth of annual worldwide exports ranked it first on the
WTO list of global exporters.
Among the runners-up were the US (819 billion USD) and China (593,4 billion USD)
Belgium appears in a strong 10th position with exports totalling 306,5 billion USD, as much as 80 % of which
is accounted for by Flanders.
Over the last 5 years, Flemish exports have risen by about 50 %, an increase unparalleled by other competing
European regions with an export-driven economy.
Moreover, for many consecutive years now, Flanders has been firmly entrenched on its number 1 position of
the global ranking of per capita exporters.
One is bound to agree that these are excellent achievements indeed. But how come a region as tiny as Flanders
has grown into a David among formidable exporting Goliaths ?
These are some of the assets that make Flanders the successful trading nation it is.

Location: in the heart of Europe.

The capital city of Flanders, Brussels, is also the capital city of Belgium and the European Union. Flanders
is located in the heart of the purchasing power that is present in the EU.

Transport: swift and efficient connections thanks to seaports, airports, train connections, waterways and
an exceptionally dense network of roads.

Education, motivation and dedication: research

reveals that the Flemish are consistently among
the best in Europe concerning productivity, level of
education and knowledge of languages.

A dynamic business climate, supported by special

attention to exports on the part of the public
authorities and fuelled by the awareness that there
is always room for improvement. Thus, not only
consolidation of existing markets but also attention
to new investments, opportunities and markets,
within and outside the EU
all wrapped up in one single location : Flanders
