I.

The Expedition of Ferdinand Magellan with Antonio Pigafetta


A. Antonio Pigafetta joins Magellan in his expedition
- Antonio Pigafetta is an Italian scholar and explorer from Venice
B. In search for the island of Moluccas, Land of Spices
- Moluccas was said to be the island of spices and that the voyage was
ordered by the king to set sail and look for the island of spices
C. Magellans sailing orders
- Every ship should follow the captain-general wherever he goes to and
there are signals which are in use of lanterns to know if the other ships

are following the mother ship


There are three watchers per ship for the safety of the voyage:
a. Beginning of the night
b. Middle of the night
c. Towards the break of the day, which is also called as La Diane or
star of the break of the day

II.

Ships and captains of Ferdinand Magellan


A. Victoria
- Led by captain Luis de Mendoza and soon was led by Duarte Barbosa

after the execution of Mendoza by Magellan


Juan Carvalho was the pilot, considered captain when he survived in
the trap in the Philippines, of Victoria after Barbosa was left in the

Philippines
Sebastian de Elcano led the ship after the pilot Juan Carvalho was

deposed in Bruni
The only ship that is left in the return of the remaining 18 crews to

Sevilla
B. Trinidad
- Flagship of Magellans expedition
- Led by the captain-general Ferdinand Magellan and soon by Duarte

Barbosa having been elected as captain-general


In the land of spices, this ship springs a leak before going back to

Seville
C. Conception

Led by captain Gaspar Quesada but soon replaced by Juan Serrano by

the order of Magellan after he executed the first captain


The ship was abandoned and burned in the Philippines because the
crews are already small in size and it cant afford to sail with three

ships with less crew

- Led by captain Juan Serrano
- The smallest of the ship and said to be lost
E. San Antonio
- Led by captain Juan de Cartagena and soon led by Alvaro de Mesquita
after Cartagena marooned the fleet because he was discontented with

- In the 20th day of September 1519, the five ships set sail in the aim of

With the expedition of Magellan, the fleet was the first to travel the
world or circumnavigate the world

Places the fleet went to circumnavigate


- Tenerife: place where they navigated the weather and rains before

setting sail.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: one of the countries that the King of Portugal
has conquered. The people are said to eat the flesh of their enemies,

not as a meat, but because they adopted the custom of it.


Port St. Julian: where the mutiny of the three captains of Victoria,
Conception, and San Antonio happened, the execution of Mendoza and
Quesada took place, marooning of Cartagena. There are tall people

that they called as giants.


Cape of the Virgins: known as the Magellans strait where Magellan

sent two ships to explore around.


Ladrones Island: known as the Thieves Island because the small
boats from the ship were stolen in this island.

Philippine Islands: where Ferdinand Magellan planted a cross,

promoted Christianity, and died.


Borneo: place where they fought with junks
Tidore in Moluccas: where the negotiation took place and trading of

spices or merchandise occured

Cape of Good Hope: a terrible cape where other crews wanted to

touch Mozambique because of the old they are experiencing


Cape Verde Islands: the crew touched the place because of an
extreme necessity because most of the crews are striving to death

V.

The Mactan Battle


- The battle with the islanders of Matan. They used spears, and lances as
they shout with grief as Lapu-Lapu who refused to obey the king of

Spain and fail to comply Rajah Humabons orders


Magellan died in this part of Pigafettas narrative and 14 more crews of

the fleet
Rajah Humabon ordered Lapu-Lapu to return the bodies of Magellan
and some of the crews who were killed in change of the same
merchandise as they wished but he refused

VI.

The remaining fleet set foot to the Land of Spices


- The fleet sighted the land of Moluccas and have met and visit the king

in Tidore, Moluccas
The crew had conversations and negotiations with the king to get
information about their voyage and begged to leave some of the crews
who would make the king have more esteem having some of the men

with him than the merchandise


They supplied the two remaining ships with hot good water to refrain
their colds
Ships were compensated with pigs, goats, fowls, also:

C. Account of ginger
D. Account of bark for bread

The return to Seville by Sebastian de Elcano


- The remaining crews went in shirts and barefoot to visit the shrine of
St. Maria of Victiry and St. Maria de Antigus or known as Our Lady of

Victory
The 60 crews from Moluca were reduced to 18 crews
The crews who died were mostlt died because of sickness, some died
of hunger, some had run away at the island of Timor, and some were
killed because of their crimes

VIII.

Antonio Pigafetta left Sevilla


A. Pigafetta went to Villadolid
- Pigafetta presented his Sacred Majesty Don Carlos a book written by
his hand about all the things about the voyage
B. Pigafetta went to Portugal
- He related the things he had seen to King John over his voyage
C. Pigafetta went to France
- He presented few things about the expedition to Madam the Regent,
mother of Christian King Don Francis
D. Pigafetta returned to Italy
- He established and devoted the stories to the noble lord, Philip de
Villiers Lisleadam Master of Rhodes
