INTRODUCTION:
Usualcriterionforthestrengthofconcreteinthebuildingindustryisthecompressivestrength,whichis
consideredasameasureofqualityconcrete.However,inpavementconstructions,suchashighwayand
airportrunway,theflexuralstrengthofconcreteisconsideredmoreimportant,asthestressesinducedin
concretepavementsaremainlyflexural.Therefore,flexuralstrengthismoreoftenspecifiedthan
compressivestrengthinthedesignofconcretemixesforpavementconstruction.Itisnotperfectlyreliableto
predictflexuralstrengthfromcompressivestrength.Further,variouscodesoftheworldspecifiedthatthe
pavingconcretemixesshouldpreferablybedesignedinthelaboratoryandcontrolledinthefieldonthe
basisofitsflexuralstrength.Therefore,thereisaneedtodesignconcretemixesbasedonflexuralstrength.
