Abstract

Ourtransportsystemisplannedtobeanonintrusiveflyoversystemthatwillnotinterferewithany
ofthecurrentorfutureroadconfigurations.OursystemwillbeconfiguredasaloopbetweenFlinders
UniversityMainCampus,FlindersMedicalCenter,FlindersUniversityTonsleyCampus,andFlinders
UniversitySturtCampus.ThisloopsystemwillhavetworailstocarryGeospheresinbothdirections
aroundtheloop.
Thecurrentlyplannedtransportsystemwillbeveryenvironmentallyandsociallyfriendly,allowingfor
thejourneyfromMainCampustoTonsleytoberelaxingsothepassengerscantakeintheview.Our
transportsystemwillusessolarpowerenergytopowerthetransportsystemandbecompletely
independantfromthegrid,uselonglastingmaterialstobuildthesystem,andwillallowpassengersto
admirethebeautifulAdelaidescenerywhiletravelingsafelytotheirdestination.
EachGeospherewillbeabletohold4passengerswithamplelegroomandlargeunderseatstorage
forbags,perfectforstudentsandstaff.TheplannedGeospheresarecomfortableandhavean
aestheticthatbeautifullyrepresentshowAdelaideisembracingnewfuturesandforeverimproving.
AllresourceswherepossiblewillbemanufacturedandboughtfromAustraliancompaniessupporting
ourcountryeconomywhilstsavingonpollutioncreatedbyimportingmaterialsfromoverseas
companies.
Ourproposedsystemwillbefarsuperiorthecurrentoneallowingforquickertraveltimes,amore
enjoyabletravelingexperience,abetterimpactontheenvironment,andanimprovedqualityof
durabilitywithagreaterabilitytolastthetestoftime.

TheoutershelloftheGeospherewillbemadefromclearPVCplastic,asitwillallowtheviewertosee
through,howeveritisstrong,durable,flameresistant,resistanttochemicalsandoil,ischemically

JustificationofDesign
AspreviouslymentionedourproposedtransportsystemwilltransportpeoplebetweenFlinders
UniversityMainCampus,FlindersMedicalCenter,FlindersUniversityTonsleyCampus,andFlinders
UniversitySturtCampus.Thesefourareaswereselectedasthecurrenttransportsystemscanbe
taxingandalsotakelongperiodsoftimetotravelbetweendestinations.
TheGeosphereswillbecompletelyrunoffsolarpower,makingthemenvironmentallyfriendlyanda
vastimprovementonthecurrentmotoringformsoftransportation.Solarenergyalsoallowsthe
Geospherestohavenoadditionalcostafterinitialconstructionotherthanscheduledrepairs.Thiswill
meannocosttothepopulousthatchosetousethistransportsystem.

Geospheresareaquickformoftransportwiththetimetakentocompleteafullloopbeing10
minutes.ThisishalfofthetimetakentowalkfromtheSturtCampustotheTonsleyCampus.These
quicktraveltimesmeanpatronswillloselessoftheirprecioustimeandbeabletousethetimesaved
productivelyandenjoyably.TheGeospherewilltravelatacomfortable20km/h(asexplainedbelow
inProposedTransportMotionAnalysis)allowingforpatronsofthisservicetoviewthebeautiful
Adelaidescenerywithasenseofserenity.


TheGeosphereslinktoFlindersMedicalCenterisconvenientformanycomputersasitlinkwiththe
FMCbusinterchange.FMCisabusyinterchangewitharound265peopleintheareausingitand1644
peopleusingthepublictransportinthesurroundingarea(Mannix,2013).Thislinkwillprovideeaseto
theuserastheywillhavea3.3minutetraveltimetoTonsleyratherthana10minutetraveltime
(traveltimecalculatedbelowinProposedTransportMotionsAnalysis).Theywillalsohavelessofa
waitiftheymissaGeospherewiththetimebetweeneachGeospherebeingaround2minutes(see
ProposedTransportMotionsAnalysis)

SafetyisofcourseofhighestconcernwithourGeospheresthisiswhytheyarefittedwithmanysafety
features.Highheadrestareinplacetoprotectpassengersfromhavingcollisionswiththeother
passengerbehindthem.Cushionedpanelsarealsooneithersideoftheheadrestsincaseaccidents.
Airbagshavebeenfittedintotheblackpanelaroundthebottomofthegeosphere,thesewilldeploy
ifanysuddenstopsoccur.

TheGeosphereswiththeirbeautifulviewovertheAdelaideareamayalsobecomeatourist
attraction.Bringingmorerevenuetothesurroundingbusinesses.ItwillalsomakeFlindersUniversity
standoutamongsttheotheruniversityinSAasthisproposedschemewillleadtotheengineering
degreesdownatTonsleybecomingmoreappealingastraveltoandfromthecampuseswillbefar
easier.

InadditiontoalltheabovementionedqualitiesoftheGeospherestheywillalsobedriverless.A
sensorwillbeplacedalongthetrackat15.45meterstocometoasmoothandslowstop.This
distancewascalculatedusingtheformula vf2 v2i = 2as Adecelerationof1m/swaschosenforour
stoppingspeedaswewantagradualstop.(OtheroriginalvaluescalculatedbelowinProposed
TransportMotionAnalysis)

Thesesensorswillcommunicatewiththecomputeralongwiththeenginetellingitwhento
decelerateandputontheGeospheresbrakes.TheGeospheresbreakswillalsobeabletobeoperated
byaseparatecontrolcomputerincaseofanemergencywherestoppingisrequired.

ASustainableDesignSolution
Thecurrentlyplanneddesignsystemwillbeveryenvironmentallyandsociallyfriendly,allowingfor
thejourneyfromMainCampustoTonsleytoberelaxingsothepassengerscantakeintheview.It
usessustainablysourcedelectricalenergytopowerthetransportsystem,useslonglastingmaterials

tobuildthesystem,allowspassengerstoadmiretheviewbuttravelsafelytotheirdestinationand
hasmanymorebenefitsthatwillbediscussedbelow.
Firstly,letsdiscusstheenvironmentalfactorsofthissystem.InPart5(below),theamountofpower
requiredtopower6Geosphereshasbeencalculatedtobeapproximately4.512kWhperday,ifthe
systemrunsfrom7:30AMto7PM.According
ClearEnergyCouncilAustralia
(2011),one1.5kWsolar
panelsystemwillproduceanaverageof6.3kWhofelectricityeveryday.Thiselectricitycanthenbe
usedtopowerthetransportsystem,andtheleftoverenergycanbeputintoreserve,orusedby
Flindersinotherareasorcampuses.Therewillbe6solarpanels,1.6x1meach,anditshouldlast
approximately25years(InfiniteEnergy,2015;CleanEnergyCouncil,2011).Howthesystemwillwork
isthesolarpanelswillbelocatedneartheTonsleybuilding,wheretherewillbeastationwherethe
Geospheresarelocatedatnightsothepubliccannotaccessthemanddamagethem.Thesolarpanels
willcollectsolarenergyandconvertitintoelectricity,whichwillthenbestoreduntilthenight.At
night,theGeosphereswillbeconnectedtotheirchargingdocks,wheretheywillbefilledwithatleast
1kWhofenergy.Thiswilldependontheweatherconditions.Forexample,inwinterorsummer,they
willbefilledwithmorethan1.5kWhofelectricity,becausetheyneedtopowertheairconditioner
andheater.
Thisisasustainablewaytopowerthesystem,asitisalongterminvestment,allowsustosavemoney
onfuelcostsandreducesCO2emissions(refertoPart4).Sincesolarpanelsaremadesilicon,whichis
oneoftheworldsmostabundantmaterials,itisbetterforyouthatburningfossilfuels.Thereare
somecarbonemissionsintheproductionofsiliconsolarpanels,buttheproductproducedallowsus
toreduceothercarbonemissions.Tomakeitevenbetterforsociety,ourcompanyissuggesting
buyingsolarpanelsystemsthathavebeenmadelocallyinAustralia,andthus,supportingthe
economyandnotsweatshopsoverseas,whichcanexposepeopletodangerouschemicals,which
harmtheirhealth.SiliconcanalsobeminedinAustralia,supportingourinfrastructureandeconomy,
andprovidingmorejobsforminers.Asitsupposedlylasts25years,thisisagoodinvestmenttomake
(InfiniteEnergy,2015).Itcostsapproximately$2,900to$6,000,whichisasmallpartofthebudget,
howeveroneofthemostimportant.
ThebatteriesusedintheGeosphereswillbea1.5kWhlithiumionbatterymodule.Panasonichas
createdthistypeofbattery:itis18mmindiameterand65mminlength,hasamassof8kg,andis
designedtooffer[s]energystoragesolutionsforcleanenergydevelopment(Panasonic,2009).This
wontdragourmodeldown,itwillallowustostoreenoughenergytopowertheGeospheres,andlike
Panasonicsaiditdoesoffer[s]energystoragesolutionsforcleanenergydevelopment(Panasonic,
2009).
AsmentionedearlierthemainbodyofthegeospherewillbemadeofclearPVCplasticAlthough,PVC
isapetrochemicalproduct,itsdurabilityandstrengthareverybeneficialtothetransport.Thereis
currentlynocommerciallyavailablesustainablehardplasticorsimilar,thusthisisthenextbestthing.
Duetoitsdurability,thecostsoftheoftheplastic(whichnormallysellforaround$50per50x25x
1.5cmsheet)willbeaninvestmentthatwilllastforatleast10yearsifnotmore(Lenntech,n.d.).

ThematerialsinsidetheGeospherewillbemadeofrecycledplasticstoreducethecarbonfootprintof
thetransportsystem.SinceAustraliahasaverysuccessfulrecyclingsystem,theplasticsfromthere
canbeusedtomadeplasticseats(toseethedesign,refertoPart1andPart2).Theseatswillalsobe
cushionedtomakethejourneymoresafeandcomfortableforthepassengers.Onthecushioned
seats,therewillbeaAboriginalartdesignstoacknowledgethecultureandtheheritageoftheKaurna
people.Thesedesignscanbegatheredandonecanbechosenbycreatingacompetitionforyoung
andoldAboriginalartistsandFlindersstudentstoshareandcreatetheirdesigns.Thiswillnotonly
encouragepeopletoexpressandsharetheirculture,butwillgetstudentsupportandinvolvementfor
theproject.
Fortherails,steelwillbeused,becauseitisdurable,strong,lightweight(forametal),hasanice
aesthetic,hasahighstrengthtoweightratioandiswidelyavailable(TataSteelConstruction,2015).
Thestrengthtoweightratioissuperbeneficialasitmeanswehavetoputlesssupportstructures
downintotheground,ruininglessofFlindersbeautifulnaturalforestsandhabitats.Thereareawide
arrayofcorrosionpreventingcoveringsforsteelnow,meaningthatthesteelstructurecanlastfor
morethana100years(TataSteelConstruction,2015).Itcanalsoeasilybefixedifthereiseveran
unfortunatebreakdown,becauseheattreatmenttechniquescanbeused.Itisalsoasustainable
material,becausewecanalwaysreturnsteeltosteelworksandhavethemredesignit(TataSteel
Constructions,2015).ItalsomeansthatwecansourcesteelfromAustralianmines,boostingthe
economy.
Therewillbesensorsbuiltintotherails,whichwillbecaughtbytheGeospheretosignalwhenit
needstostopandstart.Thesesensorswilltellthebuiltincomputersystemhowtoact:tostopor
start,toopenthedoorwhenthebuttonispushedortocloseit.Thiswillmakethesystemmore
efficient,anditwonthavetorelyofmanuallabor.
Someoftheexpensesoftheseprojectswillbetakenoutofthestudentfees.Wearehopingthatthis
projectwillbefundedbyFlindersandtheAustralianGovernment,asitishighlyhelpfultothe
studentsofFlinders,andimprovesAdelaidesrankintheworld,asitwillbethefirsttransportation
systemofitskind.Itwillattractsomevisitors,andwilldefinitelyimpressotherengineersand
designers.
ThissystemwillhopefullybebuiltduringtheconstructionoftheDarlingtonproject,howeverwill
hopefullyfinishbefore.Thiswaywearentcreatingasmuchroadblock,becausetherewillbealready
constructionsthere.ItalsomeansthatFlindersstudentswillbeabletoaccessthetransportsystem
earlieron,whichmakesitmoreconvenientforthem.AsitalsopassespasttheSturtCampus,itcan
alsobeutilisedbystudentswhoneedtogettoSturt.Inthefuture,itcanbeextendedfurther,into
theNorthcampuses.
Withourdesign,wearehopingtopromotetheuseofsustainableenergytopowertransport,
challengepeopleswayofthinkingabouttransport,createandeasysystemforstudentstouse,and
usenew

developingtechnologies.

CurrentTransportMotionAnalysis.

Withoutthecurrentpathwayupgrade,theonlywayyoucanreachtheTonsleycampusfromtheMain
FlindersCampusisbyeithercatchingtheTonsleyLoopBusorbywalking.

AsmalltestdonebyourteamwaswalkingtoTonsleyandthenbacktotheSturtcampus(whichis
MUCHclosertoTonsleythantheMainCampus),andwefoundthatittakesapproximately25
minutestotraveltoTonsleycampusand25minutesback.Thisisaverylongdistanceandtimeto
travel,veryinconvenient,especiallyforpeoplewhohavedisabilitiesormaynotbeabletotravelon
foot.ThetimetotraveltoTonsleyusingtheTonsleyLoopBusis15minutes(Flinders,n.d.).The
distancetravelledcanbecalculated,usingGoogleMapsasatool.

GoogleMapsestimatesthatitwilltake5minutestotraveltoTonsleyfromMainCampus,however
wecanusethisdatatoestimatetheaveragetimeittakestowalkthere(figure<).

turnsintoapproximately1.4m/s.Thisisthespeedthatwillbeusedinourcalculations.

Ittakesapproximately30minutestowalktoTonsleyusingthesecalculations,whichdoesntinclude
trafficanddoesntincludefromwhichpartofthecampusyouaretravelling.Thismethodoftravelling
ishighlyexhaustive,especiallyforastudentwhomaybecarryingseveraltextbooksortechnology.

WiththenewproposaloftheDarlingtonUpgradeproject,thereareevenlesswalkways,whichmeans
studentswillhavetroubletravellingbetweencampuses(figure?).Studentswillalsohavetopassalot
oftrafficlightstowalkacrossthecomplicatedroadstogettotheirdestination.
Thisiswhereourdesignsystemcomesinwithourfasttravellingtimes,howeverlowersaferspeeds,
wecangetstudentsbetweencampusesinstantaneously.
TheTonsleyLoopBuscanalsobeexaminedasatransport.Theexactmodelofthebusisnotknown,
howeveritisassumed(fromobservation)thatitisthesizeofaminibus.UsingToyota12SeatDiesel
HiaceMinibusasanexample,wecancalculatehowmanyemissionsarereleasedintotheatmosphere
andhowmuchfuelisrequiredtokeepthesystemrunning.
Theautomaticversionofthiscarmodeluses9.2L/100km,whilethemanualuses8.6L/100km
(Toyota,2015).Wewillusethemanualversionasanexample,becauseitismoreenvironmentally
friendly.ThetriptoTonsleyandbackisapproximately5km(figure<).Thereare22loopseveryday
(FlindersUniversity,n.d.).Wecancalculatehowmuchfuelisneededperday.

TheLoopbuswouldneed9.46Lperday,whichis66.22Lperweek.Theaveragepriceoffuelis
currently133.7,whichmeansthatFlinderspay$88.53tocontinuetheservice(notcountingrepairs)
(MotorMouth,2015).Thisisapproximately113kgofcarbonemissionseveryweek(ABC,2007).
Althoughthismaynotseemmuch,thiscanadduptoquitealotofmoneyandcancausealotof
damagetotheenvironment.ThisiswhytheProposedTransportMotionSystemwillbepowered
usingSolarpanelenergy.Bothofthosesourcesofenergyaresustainable,causeminimaldamageto
theenvironment,areaninvestmentinthelongrunastheywillpowerforalongtime,anddontneed
tobemanuallyrefilled.
Asseenabove,thecurrentTransportMotionSystemthatisavailableisnotveryconvenient,fastor
sustainable.ItwillalsobedelayedduringthebuildingoftheDarlingtonProject,causingmoretrouble
forTonsleystudents.OurtransportsystemwillbefinishedbuildingbeforetheDarlingtonproject,soit
canbeusedbystudentsaroundFlindersduringtheconstruction.

Ourteamhasdecidedforourtransporttobeinaloopsystem,sothatitcanbeaccessedbyall
membersoftheFlindersUniversityandFlindersHospitalcommunity:

Thisisquitealotoftime,whichreducestheriskoftwoGeospherescolliding,anditsveryunlikely

WhatweneedtoconsiderwiththisdesignistheamountforceitwouldtaketomovetheGeospheres.
Sincethetrackwillbemostlylevelandparalleltotheground,therewontbeanymajorliftsorstrains
ontheGeospheres.Thiswaschosenasageneralhealthconcern,aswedidntwanttorecreatea
rollercoaster,becausethenitwouldendangerthelivesofpeoplewithheartconditions,strokerisk,
pregnancyorafearofrollercoasters(Mosscrop,2014).Wewantourtransporttobesafeand
availabletoaccessforallpeople.Tofigureouttheforceweneedtofigureoutthemassandthe
acceleration.
ThehypothesisedmassofoneGeosphereis800kg,becausethatsapproximatelythemassofone
singlecartcoaster(AnnenbergLearner,2014).IftheaverageAustralianweighsapproximately85kg
andtheGeospherecanhave4passengers,itmeansthatthesystemneedstosupportatleast340kg
(AustralianBureauofStatistics,2012).Tomakeitmoreconvenient,themaximummassthe
Geospherecanhandleis380kg,makingitavailabletoeveryone.Thismeansthetotalmassofafull
Geosphereis1180kg.
Tocalculatetheacceleration,theformula a = (vf vi)/t canbeused.Ourinitialspeedis0m/s,and
ourfinalspeedis5.56m/s.TheteamhasdecidedthatwewanttheGeospherestoacceleratetothat
