Using the ODS Wizard to Animate Vibration Test Results

m+ps vibration controllers produce frequency response plots which can be

used to identify the response at accelerometer locations. Did you know that
the response data can be used to animate the structures overall motion?
Heres an example showing how a circular plate exhibits a dishing mode at
557Hz:

This example is displayed statically whereas, on the screen, we see a moving

image which can be panned, zoomed and rotated.
Why are animations useful? They help the engineer understand the structural
dynamics which give rise to a vibration problem and guide the development of
efficient engineering solutions. In this example, if we wanted to tune the
frequency using mass, stiffening or damping it would be most efficient to apply
it towards the centre where the higher motion occurs.
This data could also be used for qualification and correlation of finite element
models.
Animating the response from a shaker is referred to as an ODS (Operating
Deflection Shape), not to be confused with a modal test which not only
produces animations but also generates a mathematical test model by leastsquares curve fitting of the inertance (acceleration/force) data. The ODS is
the modern equivalent of testing with a strobe light. It takes a bit longer to set
up but the information produced is more comprehensive and more suitable for
both reporting and archiving.

We collect the data using the vibration controller and then use SO Analyzer to
generate the frequency response functions, create the geometry and animate
the shapes. These are the 5 basic steps:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Measure data during a controlled vibration test

Import the data into SO Analyzer
Convert the data into frequency response functions
Create the geometry
Run the ODS Wizard to generate animations

Heres a step-by-step guide:

1.

Measure data during a controlled vibration test

There will usually be one reference measurement and multiple response

measurements, usually both acceleration. The frequency response function
will be the response acceleration divided by the reference acceleration,
providing amplitude and phase across the frequency range.
Dont necessarily expect to see peaks at resonance because both the
numerator and denominator might increase. Resonances can be identified
using the response spectrum.
Multiple vibration tests will usually be required because the number of
animation Degrees of Freedoms may exceed the number of responses which
can be measured simultaneously.
A response measurement should be made at the reference location for this
location to appear in the animation. Alternatively, this information can be
synthesized in SOA with a suitably qualified FRF whose amplitude is 1 and
phase is 0.
To avoid having to rename the vibration control data when it is imported into
SO Analyzer the channel name convention should be
component.point.direction followed by the sense which is + or -. The following
VibEditor plot shows an example where the UUT is called box. The
reference is at point 1 in the Z+ direction and there is a triaxial accelerometer
located at point 5. The X, Y and Z axes must follow a right-hand rule where
the following should be observed:

X direction represented by the index finger

Y direction represented by the middle finger
Z direction represented by the thumb

An accelerometer which points in the opposite direction is given a - sense.

Correct naming at this stage ensures the ODS Wizard applies the amplitude
and phase to the correct geometry node.

The data should appear as follows in VibPost Test:

The frequency response data can be displayed by ticking Reference, ticking

the appropriate reference and highlighting the appropriate response. The
phase can be selected via the View drop-down menu.
Make a note of the test file, Getting Started Sine ODS 1_002.rsn in this
example, and its location on the computer which is commonly
C:\VcpNT\Daten\m+p.

2.

Transfer the data to SO Analyzer

Open SO Analyzer with a new project. Under File - Data Exchange Import
Workspace navigate to the VibCo results file and Open making sure the Files
of Type: is set to m+pFormat(*.RSN, ..
The results will now appear as Measurements in the Browser, as follows:

Measurements with (STEST) in their name are the SelfCheck results and can
be ignored or deleted.
3.

Convert the data to frequency response functions

The next step uses a recently introduced program file which may not exist on
older installations. Customers with a support contract should contact m+p if
this program is not installed.
Users with a PRO version of SO Analyzer can run the program file by
navigating to Analysis User Programming Editor VibCo FRF. A
simplified approach, which is necessary for users of the Std version, is to put
run UserMenu Setup and tick the VibCo FRF entry to make the program
available from User Macros, as follows:

Registered in England and Wales Company No. 3952594 VAT GB 733 4428 41

Changes to UserMenu Setup will not appear until SO Analyzer is restarted.

Running VibCo FRF will generate frequency response functions using the
reference and response data and add the calculated measurements into a
new workspace, Getting Started Sine ODS 1_002(FRF) in this case. In this
example there are 3 FRFs, one for each response channel.

4.

Create the Geometry

Run the Geometry Wizard from Analysis drop-down menu:

In our example the Component Definition page will be as follows using the
Name box and a Rectangular coordinate system:

Coordinate systems can also be Cylindrical and Spherical.

The Node Definition page will look something like the following plot with an
X,Y,Z measurement for each accelerometer location. The units are
unimportant, they just need to be relatively correct and measured in the
appropriate axis.

On the Line Definition page, use the mouse to connect the nodes together:

Hint: The keyboard Ctrl key can be used to skip to a new node without
creating a line.
Remember to Save your Project regularly.
5.

Run the ODS Wizard

All your hard work is about to be rewarded because youre just a few steps
away from generating an animation. Run the Operating Deflection Shapes
Wizard from Analysis drop-down menu:

The following interface will generate an ODS in the right-hand pane when the
cursor is used to select a frequency in the left-hand pane.
Animations can be stored by clicking the Store button, a marker is left on the
plot at the stored frequencies.
Determine resonant frequencies for animation from the spectra in a 2D Chart
if the FRFs dont exhibit distinct peaks, alternatively drag and drop the spectra
onto the
left-hand pane of the ODS Wizard.
