Fiber Optics Communication

As the modern world advances into the future, technology becomes more sophisticated
and the formation of the cyber-world becomes denser. Communication becomes a vital factor in
modernizing the world. Communication is a bridge for people to connect with each other.
Without communication, the progression of our modern world becomes near impossible.
There are many types of material used in communication. The latest, Fiber Optic, a
system of Fiber Optic connections are made up of optical fibers. An optical fiber (or optical
fibre) is a flexible, transparent fiber made by drawing glass (silica) or plastic to a diameter
slightly thicker than that of a human hair (Bell & Tainter 1880). This material development
allowed the transmission of sound through thin glass fibers woven into wires. Today, commercial
companies like AT&T and Verizon utilize these optical fibers to accelerate the mobile
transmission from phone to phone in the US (Wikipedia 2000).
In the Philippines, the transition from copper communication wires to fiber optic wires
have started. Such companies like; a) Converge, a company that guarantees Pure Fiber
Technology to subscribers in Manila, Pampanga, Bataan, Tarlac and Bulacan (Converge ICT
Solutions Inc. 2014). b) Smart, a company that started fiber optic broadband nationwide (Smart

Communication PH n.d.). c) Globe, To support the heightening tourism and business activities in
the Western portion of the Philippines, Globe has successfully landed a 400-kilometer submarine
fiber optic cable in Palawan, which will function as a "superhighway" of telecommunications
services between Puerto Princesa City to the main Luzon island and the rest of the country and
the world via San Jose, Mindoro, making the company the first telco to fiberize the area. It is
also the first-ever fiber optic backbone connecting Palawan to the rest of the Philippines and
globally (Globe 2013).
Faster communications mean faster access to different development in the Philippines.
However, can Fiber Optics communication here in the Philippines be more utilized? If it is, are
these materials accessible to our countries leading telecommunication experts. Furthermore, what
are these materials that can heighten the efficiency of the communication here in the Philippines?
This study focuses on which materials are not utilized to their full potential, and how can
we prolong the life span, accelerate the speed and improve fiber optics through research and
differentiating different materials from the past to the present, in terms of their efficiency, life
span, accessibility and cost.
