Introduction
Multiplication is one of the four fundamental operations in arithmetic. Multiplication is
often called repeated addition, since it is equivalent to adding as many copies of one of them
(multiplicand) as the value of the other one (multiplier).
Multiplication is widely used in the various fields of mathematics. It is easy to multiply
numbers when the values are small. However, as the values increases, multiplying becomes more
difficult.
In order to address this issue, we came up with a general formula to simplify the process
of multiplying by any positive number.
Problem Investigated
What relationship exists between the difference of an integer x multiplied by a positive
integer n and the integer x, and the integer x multiplied by (n-1)?
Conjecture
The difference D of an integer x multiplied by a positive integer n is equals to the integer
x multiplied by (n-1). In symbol, we have
D = nx x = (n-1) x
Verifying Conjectures
Conjecture 1
Let n = 7; x = 278
D = nx x
D = (n-1) x
D = 7(278) 278
D = (7-1) 278
= 1668
= 1668
Conjecture 2
Let n = 7; x = -324
D = nx x
D = (n-1) x
D = 7(-324) (-324)
D = (7-1)(-324)
= -3240 + 324
= (6)(-324)
= -2916
= -2916
Conjecture 3
Let n = 7; x = 0
D = nx x
D = (n-1) x
D = 7(0) (0)
D = (7-1)(0)
= 0-0
= (6)(0)
=0
=0
Summary
This study focuses on the simplified multiplication. The study investigated the following
question: What relationship exists between the difference of an integer x multiplied by a positive
integer n and the integer x, and the integer x multiplied by (n-1)?
Based from the question formulated and in the presentation of the investigation, this
study shows the following result: Given by the formula, the difference D is equal to nx- x, which
is also equal to (n-1)x.
