On a really cold day the temperature can drop below zero. Three degrees below zero is written as —3°C. We read —3°C as ‘negative 3°C’ or ‘3 degrees below zero’. Example 2 The depth to which a submarine dives is given as its depth below sea level. A submarine 500 metres below sea level is at ~500 metres. Example 3 A company can make a profit or a loss. A loss of £1000 is often denoted as a profit of —£1000. The examples above show us where negative numbers can be used. Positive and negative whole numbers are called integers. These can be represented on a number line. Adding integers with a number line Start at the first number and do as the second number tells you (where 2 means go 2 to the right, —2 means go 2 to the left).
