Below are the major updates: Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed 35 total cases, of which 5 new cases were contracted in the hospital. Three people have died. 1,369 people are currently in quarantine ‘This is the largest MERS outbreak outside the Middle East Mote than 900 schools are now closed to prevent the spread ‘The first case who brought the disease to Korea was reported on May 20. He traveled through Saudi, Qatar, the UEA and Bahrain. He sought treatment from two clinics and two hospitals and MERS was not suspected by the health workers, so the patient was not treated in isolation The South Korean President acknowledged “some insufficiency in the initial response” of the health system especially in underestimating the “contagiousness” of the disease The spread was mostly in the hospital where the index case consulted: especially the People who occupied the same room as the first patient and those who visited the same ward (even if the visit was as short as 5 minutes ) ‘One infected man traveled to China despite warnings from doctors. Please place your Region under high alert for MERS-COV. Please remind all stakeholdersof the following: ‘The signs and symptoms of MERS-COV include fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. Severe cases rapidly develop pneumonia. Virus transmission occursBEFORE adequate infection and control procedures are appliedso please advice all health workers, especially those in private and hospitals, to be highlysuspicious and to wear appropriate personal protection when seeing infectious patients, Please remind them to follow strict triage procedures of febrile patients Please alert all surveillance officers to be ready to investigate any MERS-COV suspected cases according to DOH Memorandum 2013-0205 Technical Guidelines and Standards ‘on the MERS-COV ‘We have a high Korean population in the country. Please saturate them with adequate hhealth information including who to call and where to consult in case they develop MERS-CQV-like symptoms Please ensure that your surveillance teams and hospitals in your area have adequate supplies of the appropriate personal protective equipment and that their procedures for infection prevention and control are reviewed and strictly complied with Please contact the Epidemiology Bureau if and when you find a suspected MERS-COV case AND refer all suspected cases to RITM for admission, isolationand appropriate laboratory confirmation stand A ort Area, 03 June 2055 4 MEMORANDUM CIRCULAR NO. 2015 - eee ro: ALL QUARANTINE _ PERSONNEL AIRPORT AN’ AUTHORITIES: GOVERNMENT "AGENCIES AT POUNTS O1 AIRLINES, SHIPPING, PORT USPRS "AND OTHER CONCERN POLICIES AND GUIDELINES GOV’ ERNING IIEALTH MEASURES FOR “ARRIVING PASSENGERS AND CREW FROM INTERNATIONAL TRAVELS DUE TO MERS-CoV OUTBREAK IN ARABIAN PENTNS| AND SOUTH KOREA RATIONALE ‘set No, 9271 and in pursuit to prevent, protect, mi Ag mandated by Republic the introduction, transmission or spread of public health enereS00 of internat’ the Department of Healt! concem in the Country at our airports’seaports of entry, @ through the Bureau of Quarantine, ix tasked to promulgate and enforce rules and Fons on health screening measure on arriving passengers and crew.
