December 1891 basketball was invented by a Canadian clergyman James
Naismith. Young Mens Christian Association Training School (Springfield College) in
Spring Field Massachusetts. The first ball used in basketball was a soccer ball.
Teams had nine players before. In 1897 team of five become standard.
BASKETBALL is a team sport, wherein the objectives are to shoot a ball through a
basket. A regular basketball hoop consists of a rim 18 inches in diameter and 10
feet high mounted to a backboard. A team can score a field goal by shooting the
ball through the basket. A field goal scores 2 points. If a player touches or behind
the three points lines the score is 3 points. Additional time (overtime) may be issued
when the games ends with a draw. The ball can be advanced on the court by
bouncing it while walking or running ( dribbling) or throwing(passing) it to a team
mate. It is a violation to move without dribbling (travelling), to carry it or to hold the
ball with both hands them resume dribbling (double dribble).
Fouls
Personal foul- a disruptive physical contact is penalized and a free throw is usually
awarded to an offensive player if he is fouled while scoring the ball.
Technical foul- may also be issued when certain infractions occur, most commonly
for unsportmanship like conduct on the part of the player or coach. It gives the
opposing team a free throw, and the opposing team is also retained possession of
the ball.
Basketball Specific positions
Point guard- usually the fastest player on the team.
Shooting guard- creates a high volume of shots on offense, guards the opponents
best perimeter player on defense.
Small forward- often primarily responsible for scoring points via cuts to the basket
and dribbles penetrations; on defense seeks rebounds and steal.
Power forward- play offensively often with their back to the basket.
Center- uses height and size to score ( on offense) to protect the basket closely or
to rebound.
