Unit 3 SHC 33

Assessment Criteria 1.1

Explain what it meant by:

Diversity
Diversity means difference, in general people have things in common
with each other but they are also unique and different in many ways no
one is the same.
We can find two types of diversity, the visible (e.g race/ethnicity, age ,
religion, disability, gender, sexual orientation ) and invisible ( e.g.
thinking, styles, socio-economic level, education, values, beliefs)
Is of paramount importance to create an environment in which
everybody feels valued.

Equality:
Equality means treating people, children equal and also in appropriate
way for their needs, including areas of race, gender, disability, religion or
believe, sexual orientation and age.
Treating all staff volunteer and children fairly.
Enabling all staff and student to develop to their full potential.

Inclusion:
Is based upon the idea of allowing everyone equal access to a service
regardless of gender, disability, religion
Follow examples:

In a childcare environment you could make access for disable people

possible by providing disable toilets, ramps and wide doors.
Provide for families and children who have English as a second
language resources to help with communication such a books and
diagrams of words and their meanings, also staff could learn some
words in the childrens language to communicate and build a bond.

Assessment Criteria 1.2

Describe the potential of effects of discrimination

Marginalisation is one of the effects of discriminatory practice. It is a

social division of some people from the large society. People are
separated from the society because of their age, disability, culture or
social class. If people are separated from the society they will feel
isolated and could lead to depression, anxiety, eating disorders, financial
problems and/or health problems. For example of a social class
marginalisation is when the high class get the majority of the medication
than people who really need it, especially from the low class society.
They would feel that it is normal just because they dont have the money
to pay the medication, thats why most of them just die from untreated
sickness.
Disempowerment is when an individual or group of people feel less
powerful or less confident from others. It might because of their age or
gender, age because if you are working in a hospital and you are the
youngest among the group the elderly will dominate which make you feel
disempowerment. Gender could also lead to disempowerment because
of the fact that men are stronger than women and create the idea that
women always put in second place. Women will lose their rights of
equality; if they are already less powerful than men then making them
feel they are that low is a kind of discrimination.
Low self-esteem and self-identity is a result from constant discrimination
of others. This is also like an act of bullying which you makes ones selfesteem low. A kind of discrimination could be because of their
educational level. If an individual doesn't have a strong cognitive ability,
people will verbally abuse that person. They could label that person as
"stupid" and that person will feel down because of what others call
2

him/her. And this could make this person dont want to make friends
anymore. All these things can lead to restricted opportunities and may
lead to them not using the Health and Social Care provision. They may
begin to feel that they cannot access service and this could lead to them
not receiving the health care they need.

Assessment Criteria 1.3

Explain how inclusive practice promotes equality and supports
diversity
Inclusive practice supports diversity by accepting and welcoming all kind
of people in the society. Different approaches, manners and stratagems
are applied in order to ensure that people are not secluded or excluded.
One must be aware of each individual different needs and sustaining the
wellbeing and confidence in their talent. One must ensure the
achievement and full potential in the community.
Inclusion in early years is important because it promotes a culture of
equality, opportunity and high accomplishment for all children. This
promotes community, consistency and amalgamation through
understanding and respecting others. Inclusive practice is important
because it aims to deliver improved outcomes for all children and others,
and it seals the achievement gap between disadvantaged children and
others.
To reflect inclusion in the work setting one must reflect diversity in
society. As an example one can do the following things;
Providing clear I information in as many languages as possible
Having a fair admission policy whereby it eliminates any type of
discrimination
Ensuring that there is a balance of different gender
Taking the necessary action against discriminatory behaviour by
staff or by parents.
Having the setting accessible to everyone and if the setting is
found to and treat disabled children or adults less favourable,
reasonable adjustments are to be done.
Inclusive practice means to include people from all Nations

Assessment Criteria 2.1

Explain how legislation and codes of practice relating to equality,
diversity apply to own work role
Legislation
Legislation apply at work because in healthcare one must provide
information in the form of language that the individual can understand:
making sure that an individual in a wheelchair has equal access to
activities. More examples are making sure that people with special
education needs or disabilities are able to access education and local
facilities. This could be via practical help in getting them there or by
challenging peoples attitudes and not tolerating decimation.

Examples of Legislation are:

The Human Right Act 1998- The Human Right Act makes it unlawful for
a public authority (such as Local Authority or a Court ) to act, in a way
that is incompatible with a Convention right all public authorities must
look through a lens of human rights when they are interpreting law. If
you feel that one or more of your rights have been breached by public
authority, you can raise the matter in a court. If you are unhappy with
the decision and have pursued the issue as far as it can go in the UK,
you can take your complaint to the European Court of Human Rights.

This applies to me as I must make sure that service users rights to

privacy and cultural is respected. I must provide equality service to
everyone and respect cultural and religious views.
The Equality Act 2010 A New Equality Act came into force on 1st
October 2010. This Equality Act brings together over 116 separate
pieces of legislation into one single Act. Combined, they make up a new
Act that provides a legal framework to protect the right of individuals and
advance Equal of Opportunity of all.
The Act simplifies, strengthens and harmonies the current legislation to
provide Britain with a new discrimination law which protects individuals
from unfair treatment and promotes a fair and more equal society.
4

The nine pieces of legislation that have merged are:

The Equal Pay Act 1970

The Sex Discrimination Act 1975
The Race Relation Act 1976
The Disability Discrimination Act 1995
The Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003
The Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2006
The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006
The Equality Act 2006, Part 2
The Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2007

This applies to me because I has to promote this in my everyday life

working with different individuals with various different requirement. Also
making sure I treat everyone equally.

Code of practices

Code of practices 1.5 and 1.6 apply at work. Code of practice 1.5 applies
at work because it states that equal opportunities for services users and
carers must be promoted. Code of practice 1.6 applies at work because
it state diversity, different cultures and values must be respected.

Company Policy
Our company policies at work as our company policy is equal
opportunities.

Assessment Criteria 3.3

Describe how to challenge discrimination in a way that promotes
change

If I observed discriminatory behaviour would addressed it to ensure

individuals are aware of their behaviour. By doing this it is more likely to
be dealt with in the appropriate manner. If I overheard someone making
a discriminatory remark or not promoting equality or valuing diversity I
would challenge them in a calm and professional way and tell them that
what they are saying or doing, unacceptable and explain why. I could
also add that I am upset and offended by their discriminatory words and
actions and that it is unlawful.
To promote change you one needs to change peoples attitude and
education is a key part of promoting change in any organisation. Focus
groups, reflective exercises, training days etc. all aid in promoting
change as people are interactively getting involved in the culture you are
wanting to promote. When people understand the reason behind change
they are more inclined to adopt the change than if the change is just
enforced.
