Aims
Chemical engineering laws and economics is that field of engineering which deals with the laws related to
chemical and environmental engineers and economics of projects. The aims of this module are:
2.
To create an awareness of the law making procedures in Mauritius and the various Laws and
Regulation Acts relating to Chemical and Energy/ Environmental Engineering.
To make students familiarize with the concepts of Chemical Engineering Economics by applying the
basics of Economics to manage projects and to do their costing.
Outline Syllabus
Law making process in Mauritius; Organization and jurisdiction of courts in Mauritius; Environment
protection act: enforcing agencies; Environmental conventions and regulations; Dangerous chemicals
control act; Dumping and waste carrier regulations; Energy efficiency act; Intellectual property rights;
Patents, industrial designs and trademarks act; Public procurement act and tendering process; financial
aspects; Chemical engineering economics: critical path analysis and program evaluation and review
technique of projects; Capital cost estimation; Cost index; Manufacturing cost and cost of product;
Depreciation; Taxes and insurance; Break-even analysis; Profitability of project using ratios; Project
appraisal techniques: payback period, discounted cash flow method, net present value, internal rate of
return.
3.
Provide students with a logical approach to planning the most economical path for any type of
project
Perform a cost analysis of any project and reach a decision on its feasibility based on payback
periods, Net present value and Internal rate of returns.
