1.0 BACKGROUND OF POLITEKNIK BALIK PULAU (PBU)


Balik Pulau Polytechnic (PBU), Higher Education Ministry (KPT) started its transition operation at
Seberang Perai Polytechnic (PSP) on 1st February 2007 and is the 21st polytechnic established in
Malaysia. Till now, PBU is still operating transitionally and has relocated at a shop house building at
1-3-61 Bangunan I-Avenue, Medan Kampung Relau, 11900 Bayan Lepas, Pulau Pinang in October 2007.
PBU permanent campus is located in Lot 437, Daerah E, Balik Pulau, Pulau Pinang is currently under
construction and due to be completed by August 2013. Its strategic location, surrounded by public
facilities such as sport complex, schools, housing estates, bus terminal and other facilities are an
important asset to enable the staff to be more effective in a conducive environment.
The first intake, 27 students was for July 2007 session undertaking the programme Certificate in
Information Technology. While for July 2008 session, PBU started offering the programme for Diploma
in Information Technology (Programming) taking in 36 students. Enrolment at PBU for December 2011
session is 244 students with total of staff is 55.

4.0 PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

4.1 PROGRAMME AIMS


The Diploma in Information Technology (Programming) graduates in Polytechnics, Ministry of Higher
Education will have knowledge, technical skills and attitude to adapt themselves with new technological
advancement and challenges in Programming fields.

4.2 PROGRAMME EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEO)


The Diploma in Information Technology (Programming) programme shall produce semi-professionals
who are:

Equipped with knowledge, skills and attitude of computer software development


and programming to enable them to serve on related jobs

In stills life-long learning and enables them to adapt positively to the dynamic
changes in the it challenges and industrial requirements

Trained to focus on the application, deployment and configuration needs of

Upon completion of the programme, graduates should be able to:

4.4 SYNOPSIS
This programme provides education and training in computing with a specific emphasis on computer
programming. Among the courses offered in this programme are Programming Principles, Programming
Fundamentals, Object-Oriented Programming, .Net Technology, Data Structure, and Web Programming
1 and 2. The knowledge and skills in Computing Essentials, Computer Hardware, Fundamentals of
Operating Systems, Open Source Operating System, Database System, Information System Security,
Computer Network and Project provide opportunities for students to get into abroad range of careers in
a variety of technology sectors. This programme also provides the students with transferable skills and
multiskilling which enable them to adapt and adopt to new technologies. In addition to the technical
courses, students are also taught Communicative English 1, 2 & 3, Mathematics, Islamic Education or
Moral Education, Islamic Civilization, Co-Curriculum, Soft Skills and Occupational Safety and Health to
enhance their competencies in soft skills. As the programme emphasizes self-initiated learning and
hands-on competencies, graduates of this programme will be ready to take the challenges in the world
of computing technologies.
4.5 JOB PROSPECT
This programme provides the knowledge and skills in computer software development fields with job
designation such as Computer Application Programmer, Internet Programmer, Web Programmer,

Database Programmer, System Analysts Assistant, Software Developer, Database Administrator,
Software Tester, System Support Personnel, Systems Programmer and Technical Helpdesk.

4.7 COURSE SYNOPSIS
SEMESTER 1

FP101 - PROGRAMMING PRINCIPLES


Introduces the techniques in problem solving. A multiphase program development life cycle and two
basic phases of problem solving are emphasized such as problem analysis and the stepwise specification
of the algorithms, flow diagram and pseudo code.

FP104 - COMPUTER HARDWARE


Course introduces students to the hardware and software will be utilised in Information Processing. This
course is the study of personal computer (PC) hardware including PC assembly and upgrading, and
installing and connecting peripherals. Students will learn hardware troubleshooting techniques
used to identify and rectify computer faults.

FP105 - COMPUTING ESSENTIALS


Provides a foundation in the basic Information Technology (IT) knowledge and skills necessary for ICT
professionals. Students are exposed to the principles and good practices in environmentally sustainable
computing and the use of appropriate technologies and methodologies in managing IT environment.
This course provides practical exercises in several areas of Information Technology including personal
computer (PC) applications, word processing, spread sheets, presentation, and web page development.

BA102 - MATHEMATICS
Course introduces students to complex numbers and geometry. Vectors are also covered in the course
to help students to understand better the concepts involving directions and magnitudes. This course
also addresses the use of matrices in organizing data as well as focuses on statistics.

AE101 - COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH 1


Focuses on speaking skills for students to develop the ability to communicate effectively and
confidently. It is designed to provide students with useful expressions that can be used in a variety of
social interactions and situations. It also provides students with an opportunity to initiate and
participate in group discussions.

AA101 - PENDIDIKAN ISLAM 1


Memberi pengetahuan tentang kaedah pembacaan Al-Quran, konsep ilmuan tasawwur Islam meliputi
akidah, syariah dan akhlak. Penekanan kursus ini adalah terhadap penghayatan akidah Islam serta
perlaksanaan ibadah-ibadah dalam kehidupan seharian. Kursus ini juga dapat memberi panduan dalam
membentuk sikap bertanggungjawab terhadap Allah SWT, manusia dan alam.

AS101 - SOFT SKILLS


Provides exposure and experience for personality development, communication skills, management,
leadership, writing and appreciation of professional ethics. This course develops proactive spirit and
attitude in students thus giving confidence to become excellent and charismatic individuals.

FP201 - PROGRAMMING FUNDAMENTALS

Presents structured computer programming in the C++ language. It covers the basic concepts of C++
programs, fundamental control structures, array, function, pointer in C++ language, and security
issues and guidelines when programming in C++.

FP202 - FUNDAMENTALS OF OPERATING SYSTEM


*PRE REQUISITES (S) : FP104 - COMPUTER HARDWARE
Introduces the design and implementation of operating systems. This course will cover briefly the
evolution of operating system, and also the major components of most operating system. Particular
emphasis will be given to three major OS subsystems: process management (processes, threads, CPU
scheduling, and deadlock), memory management (segmentation, paging, swapping), file systems, and
operating system support for distributed systems.

FP203 - COMPUTER ORGANISATION


Designed to introduce the basic concepts on which the stored program digital computer is formulated.
These include the functional units of a computer (hardware), the flow (buses) and storage (memory
management) of information, the representation and manipulation of numbers in binary form, and the
five to seven levels around which any computer is designed. This goal addresses the question on how
does a computer work and how it is organized. The course also provides students with foundation
knowledge of the CPU (Central Processing Unit) and assembly language programming.

FP204 - DIGITAL MEDIA


Designed to introduce students to digital media technology. Students will explore the use of multimedia
tools in designing and authoring of interactive digital media. They will be able to insert, create and edit
digital images, text, sounds, video and animation to develop multimedia application.

BA202 - DISCRETE MATHEMATICS


Course introduces students to logical and mathematical thinking. This course focuses on providing basic
logic, sets, relations and functions, as well as graphs and trees which integrate symbolic tools, graphical
concepts and numerical calculations. This course also addresses the Counting Principle, Induction, as
well as Recursion and Boolean algebra which are related to the Information Technology programme.

AA201 - PENDIDIKAN ISLAM 2


Memberi pengetahuan tentang konsep-konsep kekeluargaan Islam merangkumi isu-isu dan petikan
Enakmen Keluarga Islam yang berkaitan dengannya. Selain itu, topik sumber-sumber hukum,
pengurusan jenazah dan hokum jenayah Islam turut didedahkan dalam kursus ini. Kandungannya lebih
memfokuskan tentang cara-cara menangani permasalahan kekeluargaan serta membentuk sikap positif
dalam kehidupan berkeluarga, bermasyarakat dan bernegara.

AA202 - PENDIDIKAN MORAL 2


Memberi pengetahuan tentang kesan kemajuan sains dan teknologi maklumat. Kursus ini menekankan
tentang pembentukan moral dan etika, isu-isu moral semasa dan isu-isu remaja. Kursus ini juga
membincangkan etika keprofesionalisma dalam menghadapi pelbagai cabaran hidup.

Memfokuskan kepada penyediaan pengetahuan dan pengalaman yang boleh dijalankan di dalam dan di
luar bilik kuliah bagi perkembangan mental, minat, bakat, jasmani, rohani dan pembentukan nilai-nilai
estetika serta sosial yang positif.

SEMESTER 3

FP301 - OBJECT ORIENTED PROGRAMMING


*PRE REQUISITE(S) : FP201 - PROGRAMMING FUNDAMENTALS
Presents object-oriented equip students with the concept of object oriented programming using Java
language. This course introduces students to write, compile and run Java program, make effective use of
some of the standard packages, write object-oriented code using classes and objects, inheritance and
polymorphism.

FP304 - DATABASE SYSTEM


Introduces the fundamental concepts necessary for designing, using, and implementing database
systems and applications. This course provides students with knowledge on fundamentals of database
modelling and design, the languages and facilities provided by database management system
(DBMS).

FP305 - DATA STRUCTURE


Designed to focus on algorithms and the basic data structures. Among the specific data structures
covered are linked list, stacks, queues, trees, sorting and searching. The emphasis is on choosing
appropriate data structures and designing correct and efficient algorithms to operate on these data
structures.

FP303 - COMPUTER NETWORK


*PRE-REQUISITE(S): FP104 - COMPUTER HARDWARE
Introduces students to the concepts and principles of data transmission and computer networks. This
course enables students to correctly use standard terminology in describing the main Local Area
Network (LAN)topologies, and hardware components used in networking. This course provides

students with the knowledge and skills to build a network infrastructure using copper cable, fiber optic
cable, and wireless devices. Students also learn to troubleshoot network and secure the network.
AE301 - COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH 2
Emphasizes the skills needed to describe products and services as well as processes and procedures. It
focuses on the skills to give and respond to instructions. The course will also enable students to make
and reply to enquiries and complaints in their future workplace.

FP331 - MARKETING IN IT
Designed to introduce students to the theory and principles of marketing. Students understanding in
marketing and the implication of information technology upon the practice of marketing is enforced in
the course. The course also includes the current issues and latest trends of marketing in the digital
age.

AW101 - OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY& HEALTH 1


Designed to impart understanding of the basic of safety and health in workplace setting. This course
presents aspects of occupational safety and health, which are essential for employees to practice safe
and healthy environment, resulting in less hazards at the workplace. Emphasis is placed on the
understanding of regulations, OSH management, accident prevention and occupational First-Aid
methods.

SEMESTER 4

AT401 - INDUSTRIAL TRAINING


Covers the basic knowledge and skills of the internship which will be undergone during the fourth
semester of the Diploma program. This course gives exposure and experience to students in terms of
technology literacy, effective communication, development of human capital, policies, procedures and
regulations, professional perspective and reporting. This course will build enthusiasm and proactive
attitude in students and hence boost their confidence to become excellent trainees.

SEMESTER 5

FP501 - OPEN SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM


*PRE REQUISITES (S) : FP202 - FUNDAMENTALS OF OPERATING SYSTEM
Introductory course in Open Source Software and Open Standards. Installation, configuration and
management of Linux operating system are explored. Focus on directory and file management, user
account management, and certain device management (such as drives, printers) will be discussed. The
course also addresses shell scripting, and basic troubleshooting of Linux systems.

FP511 - HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION


Aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge of HCI, including areas such as user and task
analysis, human factors, ergonomics, accessibility standards and universal design. The course
focuses on awareness in computer technology and how usability plays a major part in achieving effective
implementation of designs and interactivity. This provides a new dimension that will enrich the lives of
people who are ICT savvy.

FP512 - WEB PROGRAMMING 1

FP304 - DATABASE SYSTEM
Designed to introduce students to program a web based application. Students will be exposed to the
software and technologies involved in developing web based application. Throughout the course,
students will learn proper techniques to develop web based applications starting from designing
interfaces to publishing application to a production server.

FP521 - PROJECT ANALYSIS AND DESIGN


Designed to teach students how to effectively plan, analyse, design, prepare and manage a
documentation of a project in areas of information and communication technology. This course
encourages students to work individually or in a team.

FP531 - STATISTICAL ANALYSIS
Introduces students to basic statistical concepts such as organizing data, numerical descriptive
measures, probability and its applications, probability distributions, sampling, estimation and hypothesis
testing.

AE501 - COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH 3


Aims to develop the skills necessary to carry out a mini project as well as job hunting skills. Students will
learn to present ideas through the use of graphs and charts. Students will learn the process of job
hunting which includes job search strategies and making enquiries. They will also learn to write resumes
and cover letters. The students will develop skills to introduce themselves, highlight their strengths and
abilities, present ideas, express opinions and respond appropriately during job interviews.

AA301 - TAMADUN ISLAM


Diperkenalkan untuk mendedahkan para pelajar terhadap konsep asas dan prinsip Tamadun Islam.
Kursus ini juga membincangkan secara terperinci tentang perjalanan sejarah Tamadun Islam yang
bermula pada Zaman Rasulullah SAW sehingga kini yang merangkumi pelbagai

aspek seperti

perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan, politik, ekonomi dan sosial. Di akhir kursus ini pelajar didedahkan
dengan perbincangan topik pemikiran Islam dan isu-isu semasa yang berkaitan dengan Tamadun Islam.

SEMESTER 6

FP611 - INFORMATION SYSTEM SECURITY


Designed to focus on the overall security processes based on security policy emphasizing on hands-on
skills in the areas of a secure perimeter, secure connectivity, identity services and intrusion
detection. The knowledge delivered shall enable students to identify some of the security approaches to
design a defensive strategy in a network environment. Discussion on the security features of Microsoft
Windows Server and Open Source Software network operating systems are also included.

Introduces students to the knowledge of GUI programming in Java. This course addresses on the
creation of GUIs through standal one front-end applications and web-based application. This course also
focuses primarily on the Swing library, Abstract Window Toolkit (AWT) and also equipped
students with knowledge in the development of database application and web-based solutions.

FP613 - .NET TECHNOLOGY


*PRE REQUISITE(S) : FP301 - OBJECT ORIENTED PROGRAMMING
Provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to develop applications in Microsoft Visual Basic
.NET for the Microsoft .NET platform. The course focuses on user interfaces, program structure,
language syntax, and integration of .NET application development.

FP621 - PROGRAMMING PROJECT


*PRE-REQUISITE(S) : FP521 - PROJECT ANALYSIS AND DESIGN
Give students the practical experience of carrying out an independent software project from project
requirements, implementation, testing to delivery and presentation of the software. Students will go
through a software process with deliverables at different stages of the process. The course requires
students to learn new technologies and software tools and encourage student to develop their generic
skills such as developing teamwork, project management, communication skills, problem solving skills
and academic writing skills. This will inculcate independent and life-long learning.

FP601 - CYBERPRENEURSHIP
Designed to introduce cyberpreneurship concepts to students. The course will equip students with the
knowledge of e-commerce business that would hopefully encourage them to become cyberpreneurship
in the ecommerce industry. The information seeking, processing and decision making skills
of a cyberpreneur has been given due recognition in the teaching of this course.

5.0 REGISTRATION
5.1 STUDENTS REGISTRATION

5.1.1

GENERAL INFORMATION

5.1.1.1 Current Student Registration Requirements


Must meet ONE of the requirements below:
a.

Obtained Kedudukan Baik (KB),Kedudukan Bersyarat (KS)or Mengulang


Semester (MS).

b. Attended Industrial Training


c. Approval for deferment of studies or change course from previous semester.
5.1.1.2 Notification of Registration Date
Students will be notified before the Final Examination via:a. The Students Affair Department Coordinator
b. The Polytechnic Websites
c. Circulars sent through Class Representative

5.1.2

REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
Students are needed to bring the following documents during registration:
a. Examination result slips;
b. Letters/Slip of acknowledgement for completing the industrial training;
c. Deferment approval letter; OR
d. Approval letter for changing courses (if related)
e. Student Card
f. Money order for study fees
g. Money order for hostels (if offered)
h. Money order for other fees (as stated in the registration letter)

5.2 COURSE REGISTRATION

5.2.1 Before registration, students must first register with JTMK (refer to the academic calendar
that is has been given).
5.2.2 Students are needed to submit a copy of their SPM Examination slip to the Academic Advisor
(for first semester students) and previous semester examination slip (for current students)
during course registration.
5.2.3 First Semester students that fulfill the requirements for course exemption:
a.

Should apply for course exemption by completing the forms and submitting them to the
Academic Advisor .Result of the application will be announced after a meeting by the
Academic Committee Department within 4 weeks of application.

b.

Upon approval, students can register for other courses in complying with the terms and
conditions that is stated in the course registration.

5.2.4 Students with ACTIVE status:


a.

Total credit hour that is allowed for student registration for General
Courses/Main/Elective is between 12(minimum) to 18 (maximum).

b.

Students are allowed to register more than 18 credit hour and not more than 21 credit
with HPNM >/ 3.00and has gotten the approval from the head of department.

5.2.5 Students with carried forward subjects OR dropped subjects in previous semester OR
students with extended semester OR students who are barred from the Industrial training
OR students who repeat subjects from previous semester;
a.

Students need to fill in forms and give priority to the subjects involved. Students must:
i.

Identify slots for all CARRY forward subjects by referring to the main time table
and comparing them with their class time table to prevent any overlapping
with General/Main/Elective Subjects. Priority must be given to the subjects
which is being carried forward if any overlapping occurs.

ii.

Identify subjects that are dropped in the previous semester. Priority must be
given to the Main subjects which is being carried forward if any overlapping
occurs.

iii.

Give justification for General/Main/Elective Subjects which overlap with the


Carried forward or dropped subjects from the main timetable. This can be done
by choosing other class slot for the same General Course/Main/Elective.

iv.

If General/Main/Elective Subjects slots cannot be determined, then the courses


must be dropped at the column SUBJECTS THAT IS NOT
REGISTERED/DEFERED.

b.

Total credit hour for General/Main/Elective Subjects must be between 12 (minimum) to


18 (maximum).

c.

Students are allowed to register more than 18 but less than 21 credit hour in condition,
the HPNM >/ 3.00 and approved by the Head of Department.

d.

If registration to take 18credit hour and more is approved by the Head of Department,
students need to fill in letter of CERTIFICATE OF COURSE REGISTRATION ABOVE 18
CREDIT HOUR and hand it to the Academic Advisor.

e.

Total credit hour for General/Main/Elective Subjects + CARRY forward Subjects must be
between 12(minimum) to 18 (maximum).

Students are allowed to register more than 10 credit hours but must be less than 21
credit hours.

Students are advised to review the registration form before signing the relevant forms
to ensure that the information contained in this form is correct.
Students are given a period until week 6 to add subjects with the permission of the
Academic Advisor.
Students are allowed to drop subjects until Week 6 after consulting with their academic
advisor and approved by the Head of Department.

6.0 STUDENTS AFFAIR DEPARTMENT


This unit responsible for managing all matters related to the student including Data Acquisition, Welfare
and Discipline.

7.0 SPORTS DEPARTMENT, CO-CURRICULAR & CULTURE


USKK serve as the engine and coordinator in the planning and implementation of sports, cultural and
curriculum activities for PBU students to produce graduates who can contribute to the socialization of
sport in society and country.

8.0 LIAISON AND INDUSTRIAL TRAINING UNIT


Industrial Training and Relations Unit (UPLI) is the academic support unit responsible for managing the
placement of polytechnic students to undergo industrial training programme. Industrial Training is one
of the conditions required for each student before they are eligible to be rewarded a certificate or
diploma Polytechnic KPT. Students will be placed in the government or private firm for 22 weeks (one
semester) for exposure to the real working environment as well as different atmosphere as in
polytechnic.

9.0 PSYCHOLOGY & CAREER UNIT


Psychology and Career Unit provide counselling services to all in Polytechnic Balik Pulau. This service is
an effort that focuses on the elements of thought, behaviour and emotions of individuals as well as
continuous improvements to the management of human capital.

10.0 EXAMINATION UNIT


Examination Unit role is to coordinate, supervise, monitor, assist and facilitate the management of
assessment and examination of relevant departments. The unit is also responsible for the coordination
of matters related to the final examination, examination results and certification. Polytechnic Balik Pulau
Examinations Unit is led by an Examinations Officer and assisted by the Examinations Coordinator of
Department (RPM), appointed by each department. Each department has a committee member in the
success and manage works like examination questions bank, update student data and related matters
before and after the exams. Examination officer is responsible for overseeing the whole process during
examination polytechnic while Examination Coordinator is responsible for managing the test cases for
their respective departments.
