PROYECTO METODOLOGIA
escritura.

fotografas.

In the words of FranciscoValera()the subjective is already implicit in the objective, which highlights how the received
distinction between objective and subjective as an absolute
demarcation between inside and outside, needs to be closely
scrutinized. Mutatis mutandis, dealing with subjective phenomena is not the same as dealing with purely private experiences,
as is often assumed. The subjective is intrinsically open to intersubjective validation, if only we avail ourselves of a method and
procedure for doing so. (2)
Floating Point by Esteban Serrano illustrates this relationship. The project starts from the observation of the
movement of the suns reflections throughout the day, by
reflecting it on the glass facades of corporate buildings
and onto the citys concrete. This phenomenon, which
usually goes unnoticed, led Esteban to build a mechanism capable of replicating that phenomenon but conferring a sense upon the experience so as to be able to tell
account of time, and the conjunction of celestial bodies,
in that anonymous urban experience. There, the question
was how to confer a symbolic overtone and give a sense
to that experience from a phenomenical standpoint.
In order to transport this symbolic capital through
perception it was necessary to call upon the cultural
context. Even when telling the daytime cycle through
an aesthetic and controlled method could generate a
first degree of interaction, the most powerful symbolic
overtone emerged upon giving each reflection a different
diameter and generate hourly cycles. Reflections would
therefore behave as a sort of digital sun clock, where
what was experienced would directly communicate with
our cultural conceptions of telling the time. Finally, this

OBJETOS PERFORMTICOS
Even when the interobjective can account for the manner in which we, as observers, may relate with objects,
a question emerges as a result of the manner in which
an object operates within that category, and especially,
as a result of its capability to design the relational space
between the subject and the object from a production
standpoint.
At the Eigengrau Laboratory, the starting point
for the design of projects was the development of art-
PERFORMATIVE OBJECTS

The directive that guided the production of the composition was attempting to emulate on the auditory realm
what the darkness artworks are to the visual field. Thus,
the adjustment was conceived in the same manner in
which a soundtrack is added to a film: it was necessary
to synchronize the visual experience with the auditory
experience in order to generate a unified experience,
capable of having the different stimuli be felt as part of a
single aesthetic body.
While subjects in the first experiment described
certain deformities in the shapes, on this test with
sound, variations were more extreme. The soundtrack involved three vibration instances, each one approximately
two minutes in length, intermixed as a continuous track.
On each of the parts, during the interview observers
claimed particular deformities in the shape, mainly in
the behaviour of the border according to the type of
vibration, as well as spatial movements back and forth,
as well as the loss of the sense of space resulting from
the darkness and the physics of the low-frequency sound
waves.
The shape would then not just change depending on who was watching it, but the whole relationship
between sound-space-observer-eigengrau would turn
into a unified system, capable of generating a temporary mirage which was possible solely as a result of the
particularities of the combined parts of the environment
and the spectators.

RESIDENCIES INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION
While the methodological framework and working hypotheses for the Laboratory stem from works involving
darkness, it was necessary to broaden that spectrum if
the intent was to posit ideas which were capable of operating in other contexts. This is how residencies are born,
as a way to discuss the ideas researched at the Laboratory with other cultural agents, capable of putting them
to the test based on their own subjectivities and expand,
contract and modify the postulates through the development and observation empathetic to both the creation
and implementation processes.
Each of the projects performed in the laboratory
consisted of designing instances of interaction which
were capable of encouraging spaces for discussion that
would feed on themselves, and ultimately, on the research, while being efficient from an artistic standpoint.
From a macro standpoint, the residencies are considered
as such an instance, by considering the research project
as a single organism, turning the entire Laboratory into
a cultural device capable of discussing in a subjective
manner on several levels.
The projects had the proposed methodology

UN EXPERIMENTO DE DUALIDAD /
PERCEPCION: DIBUJO TEMPORAL
AN EXPERIMENT OF DUALITY /
PERCEPTION: TEMPORAL DRAWING

The setup was placed atop the rooftop of a seven-storey building in Santiagos civic centre area during the
month of August. Three circular mirrors were installed
on the rooftop over homemade robotic platforms (heliostats) which were not visible from the street. These mirrors where programmed to reflect sunlight toward the
enormous, completely plain blind faade of a neighbouring building, standing over 80 meters tall. Reflections,
which were mobile thanks to the motorized platforms,
formed semi-elliptic trajectories, making the points converge at the end of each hour.

simultneamente: Espacio virtual, espacio urbano y espacio exterior.
separados: Modelo - Instruccin - Ejecucin. Generar

Rock art, made out of natural pigments and coal, includes both figurative (animals and plants) and abstract
representations (dots, lines, circles and spirals).
The presence of rock paintings resembling some
phosphenes in cave paintings of the Palaeolithic period
occurring in different geographic and temporal spaces,
allows us to wager they are not influenced by culture,
and appear to cut across the whole of the human species (9) .
Anthropologists have studied the analogy between the iconic shapes of cave art and patterns found at
the early stages of hallucination (10), which has led them
to suggest that they are paintings made by shamans in
a state of trance, and that drawings represent the visual
imagination stemming from an altered state of consciousness (11) .
It is thought that some of the paintings in the
cave may be an attempt to dominate nature through its
representation, which is dubbed sympathetic magic (12),
where, for example, a man hunting animals is drawn so
that such a thing actually happens, as in one of the cave
paintings of Altamira Cave in Spain.
Under this logic, if some of the figurative paintings obeyed to this possession and manipulation of the
physical environment, abstract paintings may well result
from an attempt to dominate the mental reality of the
human being.

discipline as long as they were able to control the conditions under which their subject were studied, using
research inside laboratories as their support to that end.
One discipline that at that time would start to
rise as an universitarian and scientific discipline would
be Art History. In its aspiration to be considered a scientific discipline, many authors responded by promoting
a formalistic criticism which vindicated arts autonomy
in relation to any other human activity. Under the wing
of an idealistic philosophy such as Benedetto Croces,
they saw art as a pure visual activity and approach it in
a purely visual aesthetic. Thus, as with other sciences,
when Art History came to vindicating it as an academic
discipline, it sought to analyse its purpose as if it were
inside an aseptic space. For formalistic criticism, both
the catalogue and the museum would then fulfil the role
of a laboratory.
Nevertheless many authors proposed theories
which tried to moving the artwork outside of the laboratory. The most clear example are the art histories
of a marxist character, which attempted to reconnect
artwork with the surrounding social structure. Another
example are proposals such as Panofskys iconology,
which seeks to construct an aprioristic interpretative
scheme which strives to convey an organic unity of all
aspects of an epoch. Nonetheless, none of these models
were capable of approaching the artwork as a phenomenon which extends beyond the confines of the laboratory
and which also reorganizing its space. This is largely the
perspicacity of the nameless science proposed by Aby
Warburg. Warburg sought to build a science that beyond
the category, includ the study of images by considering
it to be not just a visual form for aesthetic enjoyment, or
exclusively as a means for historical knowledge, or even
as an expression of a hypothesized idea, but rather as a
vitality-rich phenomenon with an internal specificity
which is always in contact with its context, of which, of
course, we are also a part of. In other words, Warburg
not just recognizes the role of the researcher within the
laboratory, but also the role of images within the archi-

Visual account of the experience
EDUADO CORALES
Considering the two moments the trial had, which was like
the first instance of vision versus the second one where certain
matters were already defined, the first things that appeared, to
me at least, were vertices. It was the first image I could have in
regards to what I was seeing. After that, well, the entire outline
appeared, but at least with the first image, many times you built
a construction from a symmetry. You first took one part, an
edge, and that same edge would form the entire shape for you.
It was then an exercise of completing geometric shapes what
appeared to me in visual terms. They were outlines that formed
figures out of one piece.
What happened to me when it was turned off the light intensity was lowered after a minute, right?

dont know how to explain it, but there was something, a small
vertigo at the end. I think it was the only thing that happened to
me emotionally.

A diffuse, slow and beating perception, constantly. The definition of the shape never corresponded to the conventional way
in which you understand a circle as such, or the square, or the
rectangle. Theyd appear, but their outline condition would
never fully manifest, but there was always a motion instead in
the beating, which sort of caused it to shiver, which made it very
organic.
At first, the only discomfort may come from being unable to see
anything for a moment; this feeling of darkness like a void, and
trying to make out a shape within it. But after a while and as
the exercises passed, I felt increasingly comfortable until, in the
end, I wanted that last one to last much longer. It felt too short,
because it gives you a much larger space to reflect.
