LAKES

Lake Ilopango
The Ilopango lake is a volcanic lake in El Salvador.
Measures 8 x 11 km, covers an area of 72 square
kilometers and a depth of 230 m. It is situated at an
altitude of 440 meters above sea level and 16 km from
San Salvador, between the departments of San Salvador,
Cuscatlan and La Paz. It is the largest natural lake in El
Salvador. Its waters with abundant fishing bream,
guapotes and juilines and proper for sailing or motor
boats.

Lake Gija
Gija Lake is a lake in Central America whose
surface is shared by El Salvador and Guatemala. It is
located on the northwestern border of El Salvador and
eastern Guatemala, including the Salvadoran
department of Santa Ana and the Guatemalan
department of Jutiapa, at an altitude of 430 meters.
The lake has an area of approximately 45 square
kilometers.
This body of fresh water has as tributaries to Osta, Angue and Cusmapa rivers. Lake pours
its flow on the right bank of the River Lempa River drains where hydroelectric dam is
Guajoyo. Two large peninsulas narrow the lake. In the Salvadoran side of the lake (which is
approximately 32 square kilometers) are the islands of Teotipa, Cerro de Tule and
Iguatepec, where since the first excavations in 1924, have found numerous pieces of preColumbian pottery. The lake is surrounded by volcanoes Mita, San Diego and Cerro
Quemado (now extinct).

Lake Olomega
Olomega lagoon is the largest body of freshwater in the eastern
part of El Salvador. Its area is 24.2 square kilometers. It is located
15 km southeast of San Miguel. It is fed and drained by the Rio
Grande de San Miguel and its current status is eutrophication. Its
jurisdiction is shared with the municipalities of Chirilagua (San
Miguel) and El Carmen (La Union).
Besides fish of different species on the banks of the lagoon you
can find many types of birds among which the white herons, pichiches, duck pig and others.

Lake Coatepeque
Lake Coatepeque is a volcanic lake, located 18 km
south of the city of Santa Ana in the municipality of
the Congo. It has an altitude of 745 meters and an
area of 25.3 square kilometers. In addition, its depth
of 115 m. It has an island called Isla del Cerro or
Teopan. The name "coatepeque" means "Hill of
Snakes" in Nahuatl language.

Lake Suchitln
Lake Suchitln or Cerron Grande reservoir was formed in
the winter of 1976 with the creation of the Central
Hidroelectrica del Cerrn Grande, in the cause of the
Lempa River.
Its name in Nahuatl means "Place of Flowers". Although
it is an artificial lake, it produces the most electricity in
the country. It has an area of 135 km2 and an altitude
between 182 and 234 meters above sea level varies
depending on time of year.

Playa Los Cobanos
The Cbanos has a beautiful beach of golden sands, located in the

Amapulapa
Amapulapa is a water park or tourist center that is
located near the town of San Vicente, 60 kilometers
east of San Salvador. The name in Nahuatl means "He
laughed where Amates sink".
This recreational site has an area of 33 apples and

dominated by volcanic ash and lava. In it emerge many

typical of this plant formation.

Taking Quezaltepeque
Making Quezaltepeque is a water park that is
located northwest of the city of Quezaltepeque in
the department of La Libertad, located at a distance
of 25 km from the capital of San Salvador. This
tourist center was opened in July 1979 and is
administered by the Salvadoran Tourism Institute
(ISTU).
The story goes that years ago this place was a water
supply where people from different places came to drink water and used it to bring it to

Entre Rios El Salvador

The festival of the hammocks
The village of Conception Quezaltepeque has a
tradition that is celebrated every year, between the first
and second weekend of November, it is The Festival of
the Hammocks.

Festival del Caf en Jayaque, La Libertad

Jayaque, celebrated its 3rd festival of coffee on November
27, a tradition in El Salvador which is held every year.
Coffee has been one of the main crops in El Salvador and
in ancient times was what sustained the country's
economy. That's one of the reasons why in Jayaque the
coffee festival is held.
The picturesque town of Jayaque entertained the audience with the genius of its people
during the festival; as they had aritos sales and exhibitions, tusa rings, stained with coffee,

Carnaval de San Miguel


The Carnival of San Miguel is one of the most important popular celebrations of El
Salvador, which takes place every November during the festivities of the city of San
Miguel.
