Description of the Learner: The learner is a 21 years old, a primigravida who is now 7 months pregnant. She is a resident of Baguio
City, Benguet and a College graduate. She came to the Health Center for her monthly pre-natal check-up. Her concern is what foods
can alleviate her present condition which is difficulty defecating. The learner would like to know further information about the effects
that would benefit her and the infant. She is able to understand English, Tagalog, and Ilokano. The patient prefers to use Tagalog or
Ilokano as a medium of instruction during the health teaching.
Subjective Cues:
Difficulty defecating for the past few days
Learning Need: Knowledge about optimum nutrition and its benefits.
Learning Style: The learner prefers to see graphical images with a more personal discussion where she can ask questions as
appropriately. Also likes physical demonstration of skills to be learned.
Learning Diagnosis: Knowledge deficit related to lack of information on optimum nutrition during pregnancy
Goal: The client will be able to verbalize the importance of eating enough fiber rich foods and performing the proper preparation
techniques after 20 minutes

Topic Content
A. Identification and importance
Fiber keeps everything moving through the large
intestine, and fights against all-too-common
constipation. Also, fiber-rich foods are usually
nutrient-dense, meaning they fill you up without
adding tons of calories. Although not technically a
nutrient, fiber is an important part of a healthy diet.
Found in fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains,
fiber (aka roughage) is the part of the plant that we
don't digest. Instead, it acts as a broom and "sweeps"
as it passes through the digestive system.
The goal is to get 25 grams to 35 grams of fiber per
day
B. Fiber rich foods
A bowl of oatmeal topped with fruit such as
blueberries makes a tasty, high-fiber breakfast. If you
find milk unpalatable due to morning sickness
symptoms, make porridge with water instead, and add
a little honey to sweeten.

Eat fiber-rich snacks like dried fruit and unsalted nuts,

which also provide healthful amounts of protein,
vitamins and minerals.
Veggies are a great choice. Go for crunchy (like
carrots and celery) and cruciferous (like broccoli and
cauliflower). A good Filipino dish would be stir fried
veggies. First, just put on some reasonable amount of
olive oil. Prepare any vegetables you would like, and
a little bit of meat too. Just stir for a few minutes, add
some salt and seasonings to taste and youre done.
Making a little snack from whole wheat bread and one
tablespoon of peanut butter is also beneficial to add
fiber to your diet.
C. Benefits of fiber in pregnancy
Consumption of fiber during pregnancy has many
benefits both before and during pregnancy. Some of
the benefits of fiber intake during pregnancy are as
follows:
Helps in the reduction or controlling of bowel
movement, thus preventing constipation.
Helps in preventing the glucose intolerance which
may lead to gestational diabetes.

It has been found that consumption of more fiber

during the first trimester actually helps in reducing the
preeclampsia by two-thirds

Lowers the risk of cervical and ovarian cancers.
