wheels to describea car is now widery used

in advertisingon terevisionand ersewhere.
lf this is considereda recent coinage
by young people, it must be a term which
has been
revived'becauseone of the authors tnii
ot
repri rememberswheels being used in
this way
twenty years ago in saskatchewan.Interestingly
enough,the patternof distributionof this
rerm among the popurationsurveyed
is armostexacily the same as the one tor
sptit.

are oftencalled "archaic" expressions, the y oung people are givingthem
life when their parentsare lettingthem die. In her recent work, Cultureand
Commitmenf,
MargaretMeadeshowsthat in the developmentof social
structureyoungpeopleare emergingas the definersof culture,or the culture
Dearersoi the race.lf this is true, then language,Englishin this case, being
a basicingredientofculture, could undergomajorchangesin the not too
distantfuture,One might go a step furtherand suggestthat young people,
havinga more primitive,a more naturalconnectionwith the culturethan
adultshave, may also have a "feeling" for the appropriateness
of some
olderformsof the language, amongotheraspectsof their culture, the source
of which is the Britishlsles.lt seemsa pity that this should be systematically
destroyedin an educationaleffort to makeyouth conformwith the more
artificialnormsof society,a societywhich is unawareof its heritageand
uncertainof its future.
Thereis a noticeabledifferencein the way in which the fair sex respond
to the questionnaire
when comparedwith the males.ln general, the women,
both mothersand daughters, show a greaterpreferencefor standardusage
than men do. A Britishdialectologisthas observedthat women (in Britain)
are more consciousof the social distinctionsinvolvedin languageusage

and tend to adopt the usagewhich is the most acceptablesocially.

Severalclear-cutregionaldifferencesemergef rom the Survey.lf one were
to draw lines (isoglosses)
on a map to note thesedifferencesas dialeciologistsdo, the largestnumberof isoglossescould be drawn between
and the restof Canada. The next highestnumberof
NewJoundland
isoglosseswould surroundthe MaritimeProvinces.Severalisoglossescould
be drawn throughQuebecseparatingEastfrom West;otherswould enclose
the PrairieProvincesor the individualprovinces. The practiceof dialectologistsis that if a numberof isoglossesclustertogether,a dialeciboundary
is established.Since the Surveydoes not specifythe locationof respondentswithin a givenprovince, the linesor isoglossesherecoincidewith
provincialboundaries.In actualpractice,the communitiescharacterizing
a certainspeechtrait would be taken into accountprecisely, regardlessof
politicalboundaries.
What i mplications,if any,does this Surveyhavefor languageeducation?
Firstof all, the notionof a standardusageurgentlyneedsa clearerdefinition,
ls standardusageto be definedas the usageof the majority,as seemsto
