1.0

GENERAL

The general testing method is to impose a static vertical load on a test pile for certain duration
and with increment on loads intervals and required cycles. The settlement of the piles under
the test load is to be observed at intervals to determine the bearing characteristic of the pile
under the maximum test load which is normally set at twice the working load of the pile.

2.0

LOAD TEST EQUIPMENT

The kentledge system for a static load test comprising of concrete blocks and steel beam
section makes up the whole loading system in which hydraulic jack impose vertical force on
the test pile.
There will be four dial gauges set up to observe the settlement of the piles using a level
instrument.
The set up of the maintain load test is attached for reference.

3.0

METHOD OF TESTING AND LOADING

Upon set up the test equipment, loads are imposed by hydraulic jack onto the pile head by
jacking against the kentledge counter height. The jacking force recorded by meter is in psi
whereby a conversion table can be referred to get the reading in metric tons. A conversion
table is attached for reference.
When the vertical load imposed, naturally the pile will settle depends on the bearing capacity
of the pile toe, i.e. the set of the pile.the settlement of the pile is recorded for an interval, say
15 minutes before full load and 1 hour interval for full load, through out the whole duration
of the test.

4.0

TEST LOAD, LOAD INCREMENT, LOAD CYCLE AND HOLDING TIME

The pile is normally tested from zero loading to 2 times the working load design for the pile.
Testing will be done in 2 cycles, 1st cycle for 100% of working load, 2nd cycle for 200% of
working load.
The load increment is normally proposed at 25% of working load for each load increment,
similarly for load decrement. The holding times are normally set at 30 minutes for each load

imposed, unless for 100% and 200% working load. For 100% of working load, the holding
time is proposed at 6 hours and for 200% working load, the holding time will be 24 hours.
A proposed load cycle and holding time is attached.
However, the load cycle, load increment and the holding time are all subject to final
confirmation from engineers.

5.0

CRITERIA OF TEST RESULT

Hydraulic Direct Injection System is also a piling system whereby every piling point is self
tested during installing. The interpretation and conclusion arrived at the test results shall be
final. The pile tested shall be deemed to have failed if:a) The residual settlement after removal of the loads exceeds (6.5 mm)
b) The total settlement exceeds (12.5 mm) under the working load.
c) The total settlement exceeds 1 (25.0 mm) or 10% of diameter of the size of pile
tested (whichever lesser) under twice the working load.

5.1

Test Result

After all the loading cycles, the loading readings will be transformed into graph presented to
engineers for comments and approval.
The graph to be plotted from the load test results are:
1) Time vs Settlement
2) Time vs Load
3) Load vs Settlement
