PLACEMAKING
SENSE OF PLACE IN URBAN SPACES
Introduction
Research analysis of urban planning in India shows the basic problems of urban
environment within social, economic and physical aspects since last two decades and
approaches and policies formulated towards their solution.
Objective
The concern of analysis of Urban Planning of India since last two decades has
resulted into understanding of existing problems of various degrees ranging from
economic, physical, social and spatial which include excessive urban rural migration,
fast growing population, infrastructure and service problems, unplanned growth of
industries, faulty planning approaches, housing shortage, unemployment situation,
degradation of environmental quality, failure of master plans etc. To check for the
prevailing issues, urban policies are formulated which include sufficient
infrastructural facilities in rural areas, provision of employment opportunities, social
and cultural development, improvement of housing conditions and lifestyle to attain a
better future.
Methodology
Research analysis evaluating long range social gain and implementation, Report on
urbanization and Human Habitat; and Indian urban future were referred to analyze
urban environment. Delhi master plan, case study of Ahmedabad, Models of Habitat
Mobility in Transitional Economics by Christopher Charles Benninger was also
referred. Burgess concentric zone theory, H. Hoyts theory, Harris and Ullmans
multiple nuclei model presented the idea and concept of ecological structure of cities.
Conclusion
An approach to make urban situations better can be regulated by need to integrate the
present planning with their future implications. Desired future with equitable
distribution of resources should be managed to produce new social and spatial
outcomes.
