Learner successes
Congratulations to this years
Adult Learner Award winners!
We will be celebrating their
achievements at a fun family
event at the Rivers Centre in
July. Tutors and sta look
forward to sharing stories like
Carmens.
Carmen Mercas completed
ESOL and Business
Administration courses with us and is now a student on
a Health and Social Care degree programme. Carmen
says:
After 7 years as a full-time mother I started an ESOL
course at CLMK. At the beginning of my education
journey I told myself I was too old for studying but this
great experience as a CLMK learner made me more
aware of my own value and encouraged my ambition.
Responding to feedback
We value your feedback and use it to make
improvements where we can.
Thanks to your comments over the past year, we have:
Fully enclosed rooms 1, 2, 3 and 4 at Rivers to lessen
noise
Improved the student lounge area at Rivers to
include an independent study area

Programmed summer courses to provide continuity

Redesigned this brochure so that Saturday courses
are grouped together
Added extra courses to meet demand
Introduced some higher level courses to enable
learners to progress
Scheduled intensive summer schools for language
learners
Introduced a special oer for learners who enrol on
more than four personal development courses over
the year

Exhibitions
Are you signing up for a creative course? Would you like
to display your work?
In addition to our annual July exhibition, we are
planning further opportunities for learners to show
their work at Rivers and other venues.
For details of all exhibition opportunities and
accompanying demonstrations and mini-workshops,
please contact jane.sharp@milton-keynes.gov.uk
Big Art Project
Work created by CLMK learners, tutors and friends in
workshops with partner MacIntyre Lifelong Learning
was displayed at the Church of Christ the Cornerstone
in June 2015.

Can you spare some time to

help us improve?

Neighbourhood
Employment
Programme
Milton Keynes Council and Milton Keynes College are
working together with Job Centre Plus and a range of
voluntary and community organisations to provide locally
based job clubs to help unemployed young people and
adults into work.
The job clubs are based in community centres, libraries
and Parish oces in the heart of priority estates so that as
many people as possible can get help.

We really value opportunities to talk to you directly

about your experience as one of our learners. As well as
visiting classes, we hold learner forums and focus
groups so that we can hear what you have to say.
Would you be able to take part in one of our Adult
Learner Forum meetings? Informal meetings are held
once or twice a year and refreshments are provided.
email: communitylearning.MK@miltonkeynes.gov.uk

Job clubs oer help with careers advice, job search, CV

writing, completing applications and basic computer
training. Advisors can help you nd other training as well,
whether you are actively seeking work or considering
your options for the future.
An up-to-date list of job clubs, opening times and contact
details is on the Council website at:
www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/clmk

Interviews and
skills checks
We want all learners to get the best from their course and
if you are applying for a qualication course we will
arrange a telephone or face-to-face interview to make
sure you understand what previous experience and
commitment the course requires.
English, ESOL and Maths learners will also have a
skills check to make sure that you start your course at
the right level.
Interviews and skills checks will take place at the Rivers
Centre during August and the rst week of September.
To book an English, ESOL or Maths Skills Check, call
01908 556703.

Payment is needed at enrolment to secure your place.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

We may, regretfully, have to cancel courses if we do not receive enough
enrolments, or close them if there is a high level of non-attendance or
withdrawal. In these circumstances you will be informed as soon as
possible by text where possible through PageOne and a refund will be
made by crediting your credit/debit card or by cheque. It is not possible
for us to make refunds in cash.
Note: Fees paid by chip and pin can only be refunded if you present the
original payment card at the Rivers reception.
However, to avoid disappointing learners who enrol on courses which do
not attract quite enough learners to be fully viable, CLMK reserves the
right to adjust the course length. For example a course may be delivered
more intensively and end a week early. Under these circumstances no
refunds or partial refunds will be possible.

Payment in instalments can be arranged where course fees are

in two equal instalments by an agreed date.

It is inadvisable to buy materials for your course until you are
certain it is running.
It may occasionally be necessary for reasons beyond the control
of Community Learning MK to change the content, timing, venue
or tutor of a programme.
A place on a course may not be transferred to another person
without informing Community Learning MK and ensuring that
eligibility to join has been checked and all enrolment details
amended.
We are unable to accept responsibility for any damage to or loss
of student property. Any valuable items should be covered by
your own insurance policy.
Cars and cycles are parked at the owners risk.
If your course involves physical activity you should be medically
t or have your doctors approval.
Smoking is not permitted at any of our venues.
Community Learning MK expects all learners and sta to play an
active part in promoting mutual respect and challenging any
form of discrimination or abuse. Community Learning MK
reserves the right to exclude any learner who does not uphold
this policy.
Community Learning MK strongly recommends that learners
only undertake one GCSE per academic year due to the amount
of work required.

Session cancellation due to extreme weather

Wherever possible we will oer replacement or extended sessions to
make up for sessions cancelled due to extreme weather, tutor illness or
other unforeseen reason. In the unusual event that this is not possible, we
will recompense learners by issuing a pro-rata credit or learning voucher
against a future course.
Cancellation or transfer by the learner
If you need to withdraw from a course and inform us in writing at least 10
working days before the course is due to start, you will be eligible for a
refund of all fees minus a 30 administration charge. If you withdraw from

Continuing your language learning?

Do you know your place on the Languages Ladder?
If you already hold any Languages Ladder certicates, make sure your new tutor knows which skills you have passed at which
levels.
Which level is best for me?
First Steps/Absolute Beginners/All Day:
For learners who have not learned any of the language before
Next Steps
For learners who have completed a First Steps/one day Absolute Beginners course or equivalent in the recent past
Improvers
For learners who have completed 40-60 hours in the recent past
Intermediate

Measure your progress on the Languages Ladder

How do you climb the Languages Ladder?
1 What is the Languages Ladder?
The Languages Ladder is a scheme which rewards your language learning achievements and helps you chart your progress.
2 How does it work?
The Languages Ladder gives you the opportunity to focus on the language skills you need - - listening, speaking, reading and
writing and helps you to identify more easily which class you should join. You can start at Grade 1 in any skill and work your
way up!
3 Do I have to do the assessment?
No, it is entirely optional, although most learners decide they would like to have their progress recognised. Feedback from
learners indicates that the step-by-step approach helps them build condence and makes learning easier.
4 When and where do these assessments take place?
Most assessments take place in the classroom and are very informal. This kind of assessment is part of the course and it is
unlikely that you will notice it happening! You might, for example, be asked to do an exercise as a group or with a partner and
the teacher will take the opportunity to listen in to what is going on.
5 How do I nd out more about the Languages Ladder?
Your tutor should be able to give you more information or you can talk to our languages advisor on 01908 556705

made by crediting your credit/debit card or by

refunded in person and with the card used.
However, to avoid disappointing learners who enrol
on courses which do not attract quite enough
learners to be fully viable, we reserve the right to
adjust the course length. For example a course may
be delivered more intensively and end a week early.
Under these circumstances no refunds or partial
refunds will be possible.

32

not be eligible for a refund. However, in exceptional
circumstances and at our discretion, we may be able
