The main focus of this course is to strongly reinforce and the further develop students' four language
skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and to thoroughly prepare them for IB Mandarin B HL
examinations. It aims to enable our students:

to achieve high intermediate level communicative fluency in spoken Mandarin and to achieve
strong intermediate level literacy in reading and writing Chinese;

to enable the students to engage meaningfully within the community and culture around them
and to develop strong skills to lay the solid foundations for lifelong Chinese learning;

to prepare the students comprehensively for academic success in Chinese language, history,
literature and culture learning.
WELCOME TO IB MANDARIN B (HL)
Welcome to IB Mandarin HL class. This class will be conducted in Mandarin only.
You will be exposed to a wide variety of authentic texts (written and oral) covering a large range of
topics relevant to the specific Language B and its culture. You will apply your language 4 skillslistening, speaking, reading and writing into the communicative modes of interactive oral, receptive
skill as well as productive skills. Competency in listening and speaking on a variety of topics is
required. You will also be evaluated for reading comprehension and writing proficiency. Writing an
essay with 480-600 characters is one of the main goals. You should be prepared to spend an additional
5-10 hours per week outside of class time.

Local newspaper articles, selections of literary works and short stories may also be included to
further strengthen students' reading skills and increase students' interest in learning.
A variety of genres and styles of texts in Chinese will be introduced throughout the year to help
to develop students' reading skills.

ASSESSMENT POLICY
Refer to the School Assessment Policy in the Handbook for late work and missing work,
absences, or academic dishonesty, etc.
1) Academic Grade
20% Formative Assessment 20% : Daily base performance on learning 4 language skills in written
and oral responses such as quizzes, oral response in class discussion, sentence patterns, etc.
Summative Assessment 80% : Over all Performance base on the results of learning in Written or
Oral presentation, Major Tests and Projects.

 aper 1 (1.5 hours) 25%: Receptive skills-Text-handling exercises on five written texts, based on

Paper 2 (1.5 hours) 25%: Written productive skills-Two compulsory writing exercises.
Section A: One task of 300480 words, based on the options, to be selected from a choice of five.
Section B: Response of 180300 words to a stimulus text, based on the core.
Written assignment (2nd year) 20%: Receptive and written productive skills

Creative writing of 600720 words plus a rational of 180-300 words, based on one of the literary texts rea

Internal assessment
Internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IB.
Individual oral (810 minutes) 20%

Based on the options: 15 minutes preparation time and a 10-minute (maximum) presentation and discuss
Interactive oral activity 10%
Based on the core: Three classroom interactive oral activities assessed by the teacher.
2) Approaches of Learning
This grade reflects students learning behaviors in the areas of: collaboration/participation and daily
preparation. Students will be assessed using the following scale: Constantly, Usually, Sometimes and
Rarely. The learning behaviors listed on the following page will be the basis for evaluating
Approaches to Learning in World Languages.

Makes an effort to speak in the target language that is learned-Chinese
Preparedness for Learning
Arrives in classroom on time and with appropriate materials: homework, charged laptop,
textbook, notebook, workbook, pencil/pen, etc.
Produces quality work (e.g. own work, neat, proof-read, name on paper)
Uses class time wisely (on time, does the Bell Work, takes notes, works efficiently)
Takes responsibility for individual learning and challenges self to do the BEST (e.g. monitors
own progress and seeks help when needed)
Demonstrates academic integrity and honesty.

Academic Dishonesty: If a student is caught plagiarizing (using work or answers that are not
their own or providing their work or answers to another student), disciplinary action will take
place according to the AISG High School Student Handbook.
Keep all assignments, worksheets, quizzes and tests for future reference in case of grade discrepancy.
