NEW LIGHT
www.jewishnews.co.uk
on old flavours
Good news for foodies just in
time for the new year, Ottolenghis
classic cookbook from 2008 has been
relaunched, with all 140 mouthwatering recipes revisited. Devised
alongside Sami Tamimi, this culinary bible became
a sensation when it was first published. Here are two
delicious recipes guaranteed to spice up your High Holy Days
pomegranate
2 medium fennel heads
1 tsp olive oil
2 tsp sumac, plus extra to garnish
Juice of 1 lemon
10g picked tarragon leaves
10g parsley, roughly chopped
70g Greek feta cheese, sliced
Salt and black pepper
This salad has all the little bursts of flavour we look for in a dish. The little explosions
of sweetness from the pomegranate seeds, for example, along with the tart astringency
of the sumac. Its lovely to eat as it is, or else served alongside some grilled fish or roasted
meat. If youre looking for a substitute to the pomegranate but want to keep the colour
and sweetness, dried cranberries or sour cherries also work well.
Start by releasing the pomegranate seeds. The best way to do it is to halve the pomegranate
along its belly (you only need half a pomegranate here), then hold the half firmly in your
hand with the seeds facing your palm. Over a large bowl, start bashing the back of the fruit
with a wooden spoon. Dont hit too hard or youll bruise the seeds and break the skin. Magically, the seeds will just fall out. Pick out any white skin that falls in.
Remove the leaves of the fennel, keeping a few to garnish later, and trim the base, making
sure you leave enough of it still attached to hold the slices together. Slice very thinly lengthwise (a mandolin would come in handy here).
In a bowl, mix the olive oil, sumac, lemon juice, herbs and some salt and pepper. Add the
fennel and toss well. Taste for seasoning but remember, the feta will add saltiness.
Layer the fennel, then the feta and then the pomegranate seeds in individual serving
dishes. Garnish with fennel leaves, sprinkle over some sumac and serve immediately.
Grease a 20cm springform cake tin and line the base and sides with baking parchment. Place the
sultanas and water in a medium saucepan and simmer over a low heat until all of the water has been
absorbed. Leave to cool.
Preheat the oven to 190C/170C fan/Gas Mark 5. Sift the flour, cinnamon, salt, baking powder
and bicarbonate of soda. Set aside.
Put the oil and sugar in the bowl of a freestanding electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment
(or use a whisk if you dont have a mixer). Slit the vanilla pod lengthways in half and, using a sharp
knife, scrape the seeds out into the bowl. Beat the oil, sugar and vanilla together, then gradually add
the eggs. The mix should be smooth and thick at this stage. Mix in the diced apples, sultanas and
lemon zest, then lightly fold in the sifted dry ingredients.
Whisk the egg whites in a clean bowl, either by hand or with a mixer, until they have a soft
meringue consistency. Fold them into the batter in two additions, trying to lose as little air as possible.
Pour the batter into the lined tin, level it with a palette knife and place in the oven. Bake for 1
hours, or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Remove from the oven and leave to
cool in the tin.
Once the cake is completely cold, you can assemble it. Remove from the tin and use a large
serrated knife to cut it horizontally in half. You should end up with two similar discs. If the cake is
very domed, you might need to shave a bit off the top half to level it.
To make the icing, beat together the butter, muscovado sugar and maple syrup until light and airy.
You can do this by hand, or, preferably, in a mixer, using the paddle attachment. Add the cream cheese
and beat until the icing is totally smooth.
Using a palette knife, spread a 1cm-thick layer of icing over the bottom half of the cake. Carefully
place the top half on it. Spoon the rest of the icing on top and use the palette knife to create a pattern.
Dust it with icing sugar, if you like.

Essaouira seems to be blithely hold-ing

Oh, and cheap did I mention cheap? Apart

WITHOUT FACTS
THERE ARE JUST
SMEARS AND
DENIAL
In Jewish News (22 September), Roslyn Pine manages to sink to a new low by
invoking personal invective
and character assassination
while defending the standard Israeli government line.
She attacks Jewish News
columnist Emily Hiltons account of the eviction of the
Palestinian villagers of Susiya on the West Bank by asserting that the Palestinians
were not expelled in 1986
because the village of Susiya
didnt exist then.According to her, the Palestinians
are being expelled because
they have erected illegal
structures - the reason given
by the Israeli High Court.
But she fails to describe the
underlying basis of this case.
According to Wikipedia, the
village of Khirbet SusyaSusiya predates the State of
Israel by about 100 years.
In 1986, this land was expropriated by the state and
the inhabitants expelled.
We could ask the obvious
question: how is it possible
for the Jewish settlements in
area C to establish and geographically expand without
displacing Palestinians from
their land? Perhaps that is
why Pine demonises these
NGOs. Without the facts,
what is left but smears?

As for dairy cows, they are artificially inseminated within three months of

Anti-Semitism / News
Welby: Church
helped spread
anti-Semitism
Jewish leaders have praised the Archbishop
of Canterbury for admitting that the Church
of England compounded the spread of
anti-Semitism.
Writing in Lessons Learned, a collection of
essays produced by the Holocaust Educational
Trust and Community Security Trust, Justin
Welby said the church should be embarrassed
by its historic role.
It is a shameful truth that, through its theological teachings, the church, which should
have offered an antidote, compounded the
spread of this virus, he wrote.
The fact that anti-Semitism has infected
the body of the Church is something of which
we as Christians must be deeply repentant.
We live with the consequences of our history
of denial and complicity.
Board of Deputies president Jonathan
Arkush praised Welbys intervention as
powerful and timely, adding: Millennia
of theological anti-Semitism against Jews including the canard that Jews killed Jesus
- permeate European thought.
The joint HET-CST booklet also showcases a Tory minister blasting dinner party
anti-Semitism, with Communities Secretary Sajid Javid taking aim at respectable
middle-class people.

Campaigner up
for new honour
A charity support worker helping
Jewish victims of sexual abuse has
been nominated for the first national
award for independent sexual violence advisers (ISVAs).
Yehudis Goldsobel, who works for
the charity Migdal Emunah, and who
has exposed issues of sexual abuse in
the Jewish community after facing
the issue herself, has been shortlisted for the LimeLight Award for
Outstanding Achievement.
The advisers help victims understand the criminal justice process, explain what happens when
reporting an offence to the police,
and stress the importance and process of forensic DNA retrieval.
Cultural sensitivities are crucial,
and Goldsobel is the only qualified
Jewish ISVA in the UK and works
across the entire religious spectrum
of the Jewish community.
The award recognises excellence,
dedication and commitment to supporting victims of sexual violence.
Goldsobel said: I am delighted

AJR PLAQUE
FOR SCHON
A Jewish industrialist who fled to the UK from
Vienna in 1939 is to be honoured with a second

Lord Frank Schon moved north during the

men are already commemorated with a plaque
each, outside each entrance of the town hall.
Their company, Marchon (coined by
joining their names together), made synthetic
detergent raw materials, employing more than
2,000 people in an economically-deprived
area. Many were ex-servicemen returning
Women told:
red is wrong
Strictly Orthodox women in London have been
told not to wear clothes that are red or yellow as
hot colours solicit attention.
In a letter commissioned by the Union of
Orthodox Hebrew Congregations and sent to
5,000 homes in and around Stamford Hill, a
rabbi advises women that their skirts or dresses
must be at least four inches below the knees
and that blouses must hide body shape so the
hips and thighs are camouflaged.
The edict, written in Yiddish, Hebrew and
English by Gateshead-based Rabbi Eliyahu
Falk, was published in The Heimishe Newsheet,

CHIEFS WORRY
OVER SCHOOLS
The Chief Rabbi has said it would be irresponsible for Londons Jewish community to try
to open more than one new school after the
government lifted a ruling limiting faithbased places to 50 percent.
His intervention comes amid intense
debate ahead of a deadline for free school
applications, with two proposals pending,
and he acknowledged that the recent
ruling had changed the landscape of
appropriate options in London.
He said that opening more than
one modern Orthodox school for
Jewish students was unrealistic.

The president of the National

Malia Bouattia (right) was

Eighteen candidates will fight to become
the entrepreneurs latest business partner and
secure a substantial 250,000 investment.
The first episode, which airs next Thursday
on BBC One, will show the teams which include
a sausage maker who thinks hes James Bond and
an IT director with a monobrow tasked with
sorting the treasure from the trash and making
as much money as they can from antique dealers.
The 69-year-old who started his business

not always smooth. How long have you got?
he quipped. When youre in business you make

His right-hand man and Jewish businessman

US candidates

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have
met separately with Israels Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in sessions that
could set the tone for relations between the
allied countries during the next presidential administration.
On Sunday, Trump met privately with
Netanyahu for more than an hour at his
residence in Trump Tower in Manhattan,
according to Israeli and campaign officials.
That evening, Clinton also met with
him, on the eve of the first debate between
the candidates.
The Israeli leader has sought to project
neutrality after perceptions he favoured
Mitt Romney over President Barack
Obama in 2012.
Trumps campaign said in a statement
that the men, who have known each other
for years, discussed many topics important to both countries, including the
special relationship between America and
Israel and the unbreakable bond between
the two countries.
They are likely to have discussed the

HAMAS COULD BE
OFF TERROR LIST
Terror group Hamas would regain access to all its
frozen European assets if judges in Luxembourg
go ahead with recommendations to remove it
from a list of proscribed organisations.
Jewish leaders responded by branding the
action unconscionable, after advice from the
British advocate general at the European Court
of Justice (ECJ), whose advice is often followed
by judges.
Advocate General Eleanor Sharpston, a
senior barrister, wrote that she considers the
court should annul the measures maintaining
Hamas on the EU list of terrorist organisations
on procedural grounds, in new published advice.
Sharpston, who was also advising the ECJ on
the banned Sri Lankan group of Tamil Tigers,
said Europe had been wrong to proscribe the
organisations in 2001 because this relied on
American decisions and unverified information.
The Council of the European Union cannot
rely on facts and evidence found in press articles
and information from the internet, rather than
in decisions of competent authorities, to support
a decision to maintain a listing, she wrote.
Sharpston advised that the court reject an
appeal by the Council of EU members against the
lower General Courts decisions in late 2014 to
remove Hamas from the sanctions list.
The European Jewish Congress said it was
appalled by the recommendation which, if
implemented, would mean Hamass assets would
be unfrozen.
It is unconscionable that European bureaucrats are playing with peoples lives due to a
technicality and narrow-mindedness, said ECJ
president Moshe Kantor. Hamas has murdered countless people and ensure millions live
in misery. Their means to kill many more could
be given to them on a silver platter because
someone in Europe feels there is not enough evidence to define them as terrorists.
Sharpstons opinion is delivered independently and is not binding on the court, whose
judges must now begin their deliberations in this
case. A spokesman said: Judgment will be given
at a later date.

In Jewish News (22 September), Roslyn Pine manages to sink to a new low by
invoking personal invective
and character assassination
while defending the standard Israeli government line.
She attacks Jewish News
columnist Emily Hiltons account of the eviction of the
Palestinian villagers of Susiya on the West Bank by asserting that the Palestinians
were not expelled in 1986
because the village of Susiya
didnt exist then. According to her, the Palestinians
are being expelled because
they have erected illegal
structures - the reason given
by the Israeli High Court.
But she fails to describe the
underlying basis of this case.
According to Wikipedia, the
village of Khirbet SusyaSusiya predates the State of
Israel by about 100 years.
In 1986, this land was expropriated by the state and
the inhabitants expelled.
We could ask the obvious
question: how is it possible
for the Jewish settlements in
Area C to establish and geographically expand without
displacing Palestinians from
their land?
Perhaps that is why Pine
demonises these NGOs.
Without the facts, what is
left but smears?

However, I wish human beings would

purely for our satisfaction.
As a cow waits in line to be murdered, it knows it is at the end of its life.
That is why they cry with tears, shake, urinate, defecate and sometimes try to
escape, while waiting for the inevitable.
As for dairy cows, they are artificially inseminated within three months of
giving birth and this goes on most of their life (if you can call it a life). Eating
meat, kosher or otherwise, is not something to be proud of. It is a trait we
should shun.

Opinion
n 2020, the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) will have been affiliated to the Labour Party for 100
years, making it almost as old as the
Labour Party itself. Throughout the past
century, Jews have played a leading role
in my partys quest for social justice, from
Millie Miller, one of my predecessors as
the MP for Ilford North, to Lord Harold
Lever, who was a pioneer in debt relief for
poorer countries, to Lord Alf Dubs today
with his work on helping child refugees,
this tradition is something to be cherished and celebrated. Yet at the Labour
Partys conference in Liverpool this week,
leaflets were circulated attacking the
JLM, claiming it acts as a representative
of a foreign power and that it does not
belong in the Labour Party.
The idea of banning a Jewish society
isnt new. Students of the 1970s and 1980s
Jewish members have cut up their membership cards this week, most notably Parry
Mitchell, a member of the House of Lords
who was, until recently, a leading figure in
Labours shadow business team.
In my own constituency, Ilford North,
Ive had countless conversations with
Jewish Labour supporters, who question
whether they will be able to vote Labour at
the next election.
Stalwarts of my local constituency party
have considered following Mitchell and
others out the door in protest at the treatment of Jewish MPs and the insufficient
response of our party and its leadership.
But I am urging Jewish supporters of the
Labour Party to join the Jewish Labour
Movement.
The Labour Party was founded on the principles of equality and justice. It has a proud
history of standing against racism and fascism
and it will have a proud future so long as there
are those of us prepared to fight for it.

NEW LIGHT
on old flavours
Good news for foodies just in
time for the new year, Ottolenghis
classic cookbook from 2008 has
been relaunched, with all 140 mouthwatering recipes revisited. Devised
alongside Sami Tamimi, this culinary bible became
a sensation when it was first published. Here are
two delicious recipes guaranteed to spice up your High Holy Days
80g sultanas
60ml water
280g plain flour
tsp ground cinnamon
tsp salt
tsp baking powder
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
120ml olive oil
160g caster sugar
vanilla pod
2 eggs, lightly beaten
Maple icing
100g unsalted butter, at room temperature
100g light muscovado sugar
85ml maple syrup
220g cream cheese, at room temperature
This is a huge Ottolenghi favourite many of our customers confess they order it just for the
maple icing! It can also be made in advance and kept wrapped in the fridge for up to a week,
ready to be brought back to room temperature and iced on the day of serving.

The estate is located right in the heart of
Chianti, which recently celebrated 300 years as
a wine-making region, having been designated
as such by Cosimo III de Medici, Grand Duke of
Tuscany, in 1716. Today, the area is well-known
for its classic red Chianti, made from Sangiovese
grapes and there is no shortage of wineries
dotted along main roads offering free samples.
A reliable, off-road car is a must in these rural
parts, where public transport is scant, but fortunately there are numerous places of interest
within an hours drive away.
We made regular trips to Siena, a picturesque
city that was historically Florences greatest rival
and which prospered through silver mining and
banking. Not coincidentally, a Jewish community, whose main source of livelihood was
moneylending, became well-established here in
medieval times. There are still traces today of the
citys ancient ghetto and an ornate synagogue at
Via delle Scotte, built in the late 18th century, is
open to the public.
At the heart of Siena is the Piazza del Campo,
a vast pedestrianised square constructed from
light travertine stone and red brick, lined with
restaurants and gelato shops, where the delicious ice creams are so fresh they literally melt
in your mouth. Twice a year, the piazza is turned
into a racetrack for a thrilling horse race known
locally as Il Palio.
We also spent time in Arezzo, a charming
ancient city used as the setting for Roberto
Benignis Life Is Beautiful and Montepulciano,
an architectural gem with well-maintained
medieval brick houses and palaces, as well as
wonderful sweeping views of the Tuscan
hills beyond.
Our final destination was Florence, the
capital of Tuscany, and the regions largest city.
Some 13 million tourists flock to this UNESCO
World Heritage Site every year and the day
of our arrival was no exception, with visitors
heaving around the narrow streets. Theres
something special about Florence from the
medieval Duomo with its iconic red dome, to the
Uffizi Gallery filled with Renaissance masterpieces, Michelangelos statue of David and the

long time as a travel vaccine because W
has always been prevalent in parts of the

having had his childhood vaccinations,

He will have had a meningitis C vaccination as a child as well as MMR and Hib

types of meningitis but not all. Because of
the way students socialize and live closely

between them which is why we sometimes see outbreaks of disease in student

RABBI ALEX CHAPPER
What final message would you expect the
Torah to provide on what is effectively the
last Shabbat of the year? What parting
thought should it leave us with as we end
another cycle of seasons? The opening
words simply read: All of you are standing
today before the Lord your God.
This seems somewhat disappointing, if
not anticlimactic. Let us attempt to understand the true depth of this statement.
At the end of the year, on the precipice
of a new dawn, we are asked to contemplate a simple truth we are still here, we
were spared to survive another 12 months
and whatever we had to endure, many have
not been afforded the privilege that is life.
So dont worry about lofty concepts there
is plenty of time to ponder them for now
just appreciate we are alive, recognise the
gift of life and be thankful.
At this level of consciousness we are
ready for the process of Teshuvah the
return to God described later in the sedra:
When all these things come upon you, the
blessing and the curse and you will return
to the Lord your God.

Jewish Hero
My Two Shekels
STEPHEN LAUGHTON
Forty-seven years old is too young to die.
But earlier this month, surrounded by her
family, actress and activist Alexis
Arquette passed away.
I first clocked Arquette in teeny indy
comedy-drama Threesome. I loved the film,
but it turned out Arquette hated it. She
was outspoken from the off,
but perhaps she had to be the
fourth of five children born into
a Hollywood dynasty, Arquette
was never going to get far by
staying quiet.
Life was not easy as an openly gay actor during the 1990s in
Hollywood. Often perceived as
a troublemaker, Arquette soon
found her niche eccentric
characters in off-beat films
and the roles came pouring in:
Pulp Fiction, Of Mice and Men and Frisk, to
name a few.
She finally crossed over into mainstream
cinema with the 1998 Adam Sandler vehicle,
The Wedding Singer. There was a delicacy in
the playfulness and something completely
tragic and nuanced in the humour.

Dear Sarah
My thoughts are with you
at this difficult time. If your
current will leaves parts
of your estate to your late
husband, you will need to
re-draft it.
If you have friends and
family you would like to leave
your estate to the new wll
should include them, otherwise it might be appropriate to
look at other options such as
charities or other individuals.
You will also need to
choose a new executor as it

important that whoever you
