To attract Bridgelands residents to certain place, some place-making-measures have to be taken to upgrade these places and improve their attractiveness. George Boyack Park is the heart of this
masterplan, but other places-to-be will also get an improvement.
For example 1st Avenue, were the public space and the road will
get a new design. This design will be safer for slow modes of transportation, like walking and cycling. Also plans are already made
by the local government to give St. Patricks Island an upgrade,
which will also be a great place to recreate for Bridgeland and Calgary residents. The Calgary Zoo is already a place-to-be for people
from Calgary.
George Boyack Park is the epicentre of the masterplan when it
comes to combining place-making with community building. The
development is all based on this location.

Cycling

The building of a strong community is the main goal for Bridgeland. To transform the unanimous
coexistence that Bridgeland currently knows into a strong cohesive community, that undertakes
action for neigbouhood improvements by themselves, some measures have to me made in advance. The masterplan contains four phases, each phase has its own main goal and a set of
measures to achieve it. The measures that will be taken are divided into: quick-wins (1-3 years),
shor-term (3-5 years), midterm (5-10 years) and longterm (10-20 years) measures.
How the measurement are divided in the four phases is seen in the timeline. The process of attract, connect, act and affect will be explained below.

The vision for Bridgeland in 2035 will be that the community of Bridgeland has become an example for Calgary and beyond when it comes to developing a strong community-feeling. The
neighbourhood has grown from an unanimous, individualistic coexistence to a solidair, cohesive community. The residents have got to know each other better and found out that they can
achieve more when working together. Most of the goals are physical ones and are cognizable
within the neigbourhood, like reinvigorations of the neigbourhood parks. Other achievements
will be less notable but have certainly established. The strong social cohesion is almost tangible
which really adds value to the high liveliness that Bridgeland will have.

Vision

First 5 years

Other measurements

The first five years of our masterplan will be the most important. In these
years the community has to be build in Bridgeland. To achieve this mail
goal the quick-wins will be important to set up the process. The Bridgeland Riverside Community Assosiation will play a major part in the build of
the community. From here everything in the community will be organized.
Besides the BRCA, a coffeebar - named Georges - will be realised in the
upgraded George Boyak Park. This will be a place where residants from
all ages can come togehter to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. To encourage
residents to meet new people the Have-a-cup campaign will be set up.
This campaign will brake the ice for residants to meet each other.

The cycling network

in Bridgeland will the
best in Calgary. All
different routes will
be connected and safe
to cycle. In this way
the bicycle use will
increase while the car
use will decrease. The
network will look like
in the map as shown
here on te left.

To create more places for the community to

come together and meet each other, more places-to-be will be made. This is shown below here.
The places-to-be will be connected true different themed route to encourage the use of slow
modes of transport. Besides the themed-routes
a whole cylcing network will be realised. This cycle network will make cycling in Bridgeland safe.
Where the cycling network and routes will be realised is seen in the maps and pictures below.

To get more people

walking and cycling in
Bridgeland there will
be Themed Routes.
These routes will have
different themes like:
the Zoo-route, the
Park-route and the Riverwalk. It will increase
the sense of place and
get more people moving. The routes will also
connect places-to-be.

Places-to-be

An other goal is to create more Places-tobe. The cycling and

walking routes will
connect these places
and will also improve
the sense of place.
With this placemaking
Bridgeland will be a
pleasant place to be.
Not only for residants
from Bridgeland, but
for residents from
whole of Calgay.
Places-to-be are:

- BRCA
- George Boyakpark
- Georges
- 1st Avenue
- Calgary Zoo
- St. Patricks Island

Connect

When George Boyack Park has been upgraded and is now attracting more residents, the case in this second step is to encourage encounters between these attracted residents in order to increase social cohesion. Several developments have
been made, mostly events and campaigns, to encourage encounters. Most events are attending physical measures, others stand on their own. Connect also stands for connection
all Bridgelands places-to-be by intensifying and upgrading the
routes for slow modes of transportation.

Act

When the social cohesion within Bridgeland has improved

and there is a strong(er) community feeling, it is time to get
residents to take action. Action, together as a community, to
further improve their neighbourhood for the better. In case
the community has reached a goal, this should be confirmed
by events to highlight it.

Affect

The local government knows they can count on the cooperation of the Bridgeland community if
they want to improve Bridgeland for the better. Vice versa the Bridgeland community even adduce their own bottom-up projects, without the initiative from the local government. Residents
from other neighbourhoods have seen the improvements Bridgeland has achieved the last years
and Early adapters will rise from other parts of Calgary. These Early adapters will start small
bottom-up projects in their own neighbourhood and will approach their local government to
achieve the same goals as the Bridgelanders did.
