year
2015-2016,
Sta. Catalina National High
School stands proud to be ready
with its newly constructed 2storey building six classrooms
ready for grades 11 and 12 after a
ceremonial blessing was done,
Sept. 4.
Rev. Aurillo Reyes celebrated
a mass as the ribbon cutting for
occupancy occurred with Mr. Jessie
V. Vasquez, principal III, and Mr.
Nelson D. Mendoza, Computer System Technological College (CSTC)
head as represented by Mrs. Rosemarie L. Manalo (who celebrated
her birthday that moment).
Construction of the said
building, which was estimated to
cost at least 6M according to Mr.
Ferdinand Rosima, school property
custodian, started in 2013. Local
government officials, as well as the

stakeholders, supported this cream

and yellow-green building project.
It can be remembered that in
2011, Honorable Mayor Ferdinand
Maliwanag donated the 2000 sq

1-M-worth
lot
after
negotiations to purchase the
property from Mr. Rene and Charito
Seraspe. In addition, Mr. Fernando
Perez, a faculty member who owns
a parcel of land behind donated a
5x5 m lot to open an additional path
to-from the new building.

For 30 years, the coastal

The event is in line with the worlds

education (6 elementary years and 4 high school years). Thus, prompting
Filipinos to undergo additional years of studies abroad if they aim for higher posts.
Facilitywise, facultywise, curriculumwise if there are such terms--how are we?
Buildings and facilities are now being put up to the amazement of
many that grades 11 and 12 have already been started in our school.
Additional classrooms are already standing and more are being built.
Faculty members are already identified and still, many are
continuously gaining skills and knowledge in their specific fields to
capture the 2016 blast.
The tracks have been presented, explained and now being
discussed among possible junior high school finishers. These had
already been reviewed by experts in the field of education, made
available through the net, downloaded and now being implemented.
SCNHS is doing its best, as usual, to offer the different tracks
required by the program. Hopefully, funds from the government must
pour in. After all, we are a public school where a promised free education
is advertized.
Who will say then that we are not yet ready? Surprisingly, we
are left no choice but to be no matter what!
But the real score goes, are stakeholders ready to take whatever we
could offer to the best that we can?

Teachers who spend more time

They must also enjoy being

A learning environment is a
surrounding by which students must
be comfortably stable at. This place
should be alleviated for it will be a
factor in a students progress in his/

effectively because it will soothe and
relax the students, as well as teachers. It will improve and increase the
good quality of education that a student can gain and it can provide and
supply the students need for such
activities, especially now that the K to
12 curriculum is implemented.

Early parenthood is a matter of choice in life. It is neither

a mistake but a reality that must
be prepared for.
According to the results of the
2013 National Demographic and
Health Survey (NDHS), one out of
ten young Filipino women aged 15
-19 has began child-bearing: eight
percent of which have already
their first child. For some, early
parenthood is a disease in our
society now.
Teenagers of today find
difficulties in decision making.
Thus, I would suggest that the
elder
parents role must be
heightened because youngsters
like us are having a lot of

Another reason why
comfortable classrooms should be

of education because the more
facilities are provided, the more
students are benefited. Eventually,
more recognition for the school will be
received. It helps students gain
confidence and assume higher
academic posts. As a result, an
augmented quality of education will be

breaks the trust of parents and anyones impression within the society might ruin ones future.
Early parenthood is not in
my list because this will just
produce a weak community with a
generation of blue babies.
Based on research of the Disease
Control and Prevention, what an
adult mom experiences once she
has such depression is twice harder among teenage moms. This is
because young women who become pregnant tend to have poor
bonding with their parents, limited
knowledge on how to give birth
and develop fear of
responsibilities becoming a parent.
Many news flashed on television
show what a woman experiences
after giving birth and we usually
see how hard it would be as we
watch them.
The idea also breaks the trust
that has been built with the elder

But have you ever known that he was
one of the ordinary boys playing around the

He graduated in our school in 2006 with Mrs.

year) class where he became the class president,

constant representative of their year level in some
of the very few popularity contests that time.
Last time we heard, hes having cameo

Are you familiar with this song? -maybe not! This

is an old song yet so awakening our emotions. Just
like our partners in focus today, we might ask when the tandem might have start.
According to my query, they have once or twice met
already but more or less hardly knew each otherjust like
the song, isnt it? Aldub you Thats what the famous
line today from the love team of Aldub on Kalyeserye of the
longest running noontime show.
Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza, also known as
Yaya Dub (Divina Ursula Bokbokova Smash playful reverse
acronym of Dubsmash) are the two most popular and eyecatching pair on television. Where and how did they made it
on screen?
First is Maine Mendoza a.k.aYaya Dub or
Nicomaine Dei Capili Mendoza in real life. Born on the
third day of March, 1995 she used to upload her Dubsmash
videos which
suddenly became viral overnight (whew!).
Maine Mendoza was born and raised in the municipality of
Sta. Maria Bulacan, Philippines. Fourth of five siblings, she
finished her elementary education at St. Paul College of
Bocaue.
Culinary Arts at De La Salle College of St.
Benilde was her finished degree after spending her on-thejob training for specialization at the Sagamore in Bolton
Landing, New York.
Maines tele-career rocketed after she began posting
Dubsmashvideosof different personalities on Facebook like
impersonating Kris Aquino which went viral with one
million views overnight. Thus, she was called Queen of
Dubsmash in the Philippines.
For this reason, she was offered a candid role in Eat
BulagasJuan for All, All for Juan segment which gave her
an opportunity to be part of the show. From there on,
people started to notice her as she was given a screen
name,Yaya Dub.
Next is the Pambansang Bae- Alden Richard or
Richard Reyes Faulkerson Jr. in real life. Born on January
2, 1992 in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, Philippines, Alden is the
second child of Richard Faulkerson Sr. and Rosario Reyes,

who dreamt of
him pursuing an
acting
career
although he was
hesitant to do it
initially.
He is 23 years
of age and wanted to be a pilot,
at first, but after
his mother died, he tried his luck in Show business. He auditioned for Star Struck and Pinoy Big Brother (Teen Clash) of
2010
under his real name, but failed to be part of both
reality shows. After passing the auditions, he changed his
stage name to Alden Richards and signed a 5-year contract
in GMA Network.
Until 2015, Richards became a part of the
Philippines longest running noontime variety show, Eat
Bulaga. First, he became a co-host in the segment of Thats
My Bae. His popularity has further skyrocketed not only
because of the everyday TV exposure as a mainstay co-host,
but also because of the formation of an accidental co-host,
Yaya Dub.
The love team started on July 16, the Aldub couples
main communication is through dubbing audio samples of
popular songs, films, and TV series as well as handwritten
messages on screen. On September 5, the couple finally saw
each other for the first time after their respective
performances in Bulaga Pa More! Dabarkads Edition
Wildcard Round. Subsequent meetings for the pair happened
in the weeks that followed, advancing the story line of the
series.
On September 26, they have reached the highest

each year, is dedicated to the improvement of beaches,
coastal regions and surrounding areas throughout the
world. It purports to be the largest volunteer event in the
world, and has operated for 29 years now
Now, on its 30th year, Sta. Catalina opt to join the
Youth for Environment in Schools Organization (YES-O) on
its advocacy to save our oceans as well as those which make it their
habitat, and save it from destruction.
Its good to know that, at least, weve been a part of this
simultaneous activity around the world; and good to know
this report from the Ocean Conservancy, the leading organizing
group in the world:
8M metric tons of plastic leak into the worlds ocean
every year. Without concerted global action, there could be one ton
of plastic for every three tons of fish by 2025, leading to massive
environmental, economic and health issues. Thus, heeding the call
worldwide shows a path forwards to eliminating ocean plastic.
As such, this report worldwide has been posted (hoping
that our waste

against Waste: paper challenge in Sta. Catalina National
High School under their adviser, Mrs. Nenita Braga and
co-adviser , Mrs. Veronique Maranan early July.
To decrease the waste in school, papers from
different classroom in each year level were collected for
disposal in the junk shops. The section which got the
highest rate of paper won and the prize they got was the
amount gained from the junkshops where such were sold.
Grade7 Molave ranks first with 14.3 kg. white
paper, followed by grade7 Mangrove with 10 kilos of
white paper and 2 kg. waste paper. Grade8 Diamond took
the third post with 9.8 kg. white paper and 4.4 kg. of

In August, grade 8 Garnet ruled at 6 kg. waste

Grade 8 Diamond on the third with 2.8 kg. white paper

Its so hot here in the Philippines!

Unfortunately, Sta. Catalina Sur

Philippines (obviously). Thus, we cant deny
the fact that we are indeed affected We
could see it in the faces of our mentors, our

Alteration of weather patterns which
include temperature changes, precipitation
changes and storm track changes and
intensity are the primary effects of it. It is a
climate cycle in the Pacific Ocean with a global impact on weather patterns. The cycle begins when warm water in the western tropical Pacific Ocean shifts eastward along the
equator toward the coast of South
America, this warm water pools near
Indonesia and Philippines.
The secondary effects/consequences
of El Nio are fires, drought, flooding,
economic changes (price of heating, food,
etc.), political and social unrest, crash of
fisheries, famine, plagues (hanta virus),
insect population explosion leading to disease
and plagues and the crop failure.

Heard of the phrase? The BIG one--- its really a BIG issue, a
BIG question that requires a BIG answer and a BIG preparation in our part.

Whats common today?... sore eyes!

Target: any one of us.
Aside from the feeling of being abandoned once the people
around us learn that we got red eyes, do you know that having sore eyes
gives an unpleasant sensation in or around one or both eyes?
With these our eyes may feel gritty, tender or tired. Sore eyes may
be caused by excessive rubbing of the eyes. Airborne irritants, including
smoke and smog, as well as other environment factors, such as exposure to
chemicals or even too much sun, can also be contributors. This might
bring us dry eyes which become very common cause of sore eyes.
We might get sore eyes from prolonged close work such as reading
or concentrating on a computer screen. An incorrect prescription for
eyewear contributes to eye fatigue leading to soreness. Prolonged contact
lens wear also causes sore eyes.
There may be several other symptoms along with sore eyes
including eye pain, redness, itchiness, swelling, tearing, or discharge from
the eyes. Sore eyes without eye pain are common complaint that usually
resolves on its own with rest.
Sore eyes accompanied by eye pain and other symptoms, including
fever, discharge, redness, sudden vision changes, or eyelids that are red and
swollen, should be evaluated by your health care provider. Depending on
the underlying cause, your health care provider may advice the use of
artificial tears, antihistamines, antibiotics or simply, rest . (source: google.com)

every school. Sta. Catalina is not exempted in this drill.

Historical records tell us that earthquakes are impossible to predict.
Qouted from Kim Luces news feature at GMA7, he has the following to note:
Metro Manilas West Valley Fault is due for the next Big One within
our lifetimes. The West Valley Fault that runs from the heights of Sierra Madre
down to Laguna. It crosses the eastern side of Quezon City, western side of
Marikina, western part of Pasig, eastern part of Makati, parts of Taguig, and
Muntinlupa. The fault has moved four times in the past 1,400 years on average,
it moves 400 years. History says that the last time an earthquake occurred along
the West Valley Fault was in 1658, around 355 years ago.
The earthquake can occur anywhere along West Valley Fault, including
Metro Manila. But a 7.2 magnitude earthquake can shake the ground even a
hundred kilometers away, which means that it can shake the whole Metro Manila
and its surrounding provinces including Quezon Province.
The most important preparation measure is to make sure that buildings,
houses and infrastructuresare earthquake and fire resistant. Major lifelines like
water and power supply and communication means should be strengthened.
Another is to have an efficient relief and recovery system like
bayanihan where provinces unaffected by the earthquake could help those that
are affected. First aid and rescue should be available in each community in case
major assistance cannot immediately arrive in their area after an earthquake.
-TJD/OMG, GMA News/ (Kim Luces, GMA News)

Catalinians, we got to be ready! Lets take it seriously in mind No

one knows what will occur in the next few minutes (hey! While typing this

western U.S. and Southeast Africa? Surprisingly, it
brings benefits for them.
Fewer hurricanes and other tropical cyclones in
the North Atlantic, milder winters in Southern Canada
and the Northern continental United States,
replenishment of water supplies in the Southern U.S.
and less diseases in some areas due to drier weather
(like malaria in Southern Africa) are some of its benefits.
Before we go too far, lets come back to
SCNHS accordingly, the best help that we can do to
lessen the sufferings of our stakeholders brought by
this phenomenon, let us all stay fresh--- keep calm, quiet and observe proper usage of our ample source of

Meteor shower. What is it?? There will be
one on the 21st of this month!

awesome experience.
This year, it will be an exhilarating experience if
we take note of this years METEOR SHOWER. We might
not know it but this happens while were asleep
Most meteor showers are spawned by comets.
As a comet orbits the Sun it sheds an icy, dusty debris
stream along its orbit. If earth travels through this
stream, we will see a meteor shower. Although the meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, if you trace their
paths, the meteors in each shower appear to "rain" into
the sky from the same region. Meteor showers are
named for the constellation that coincides with this region in the sky, a spot known as the radiant. For instance, the radiant for the Leonid meteor shower is in
the constellation Leo. The Perseid meteor shower is so
named because meteors appear to fall from a point in
the constellation Perseus.

Our Teacher,
our Most Valuable
Second Parents
compiled by Axl Rose Azusada

This proves to us that teachers are,

indeed, agents of change not for worse
but
for the better! They, can make us,
students, move and rally by
their side when needed.
Ms. Jolewyn M. Mindanao
is one of those highly nominated
to be the a valuable
second
parent during The Golden
Grains search project
that will identify
teachers who struck our hearts most.
Well she is the bubbly
woman behind our grade 9
memories. Shes the one who
defends and supports her class in
all undertakings in-between
responsibilities at home.
Ms. Haydee F. Vealez comes
next. Shes not handling any
class for advisorship but shes the woman
behind every news bit we take in our
publication. She fill up the pages of our newspaper when were running out of words; just
the way she fills up the missing parts of our
classroom memories.
Our next specimen is Ms.
Veronique M. Maranan, our everindustrious science teacher and,
take note the woman behind
every successful YES-O activity.
Its good to mention that a day
would not slip out of her hand without a valuable lesson in life learned.
Next is a rather weird, unpredictable
guy Why did I say so? Because this is the
first time we met him (were G7, hallerr!).
The first
time we hear him gave his music
lessons,
our jaws dropped! Man, hes
good! We hope to learn more
from him, though. Still new in
our school, but not in the field
of teaching which proves his
skills
and craft in handling classes.
Thus, taking our attention and vote for Mr.
John Loui O. Dizon.
Another figure that might be having a
great impact in our lives is a Bicolano mentor
Mr. Emmanuel M. Maderazo. Most of us
would see him around so seriously. He seldom
smiles but once you start crack a joke, the more
he
would hilariously butt in This
proves to us the saying that goes
silent waters run deep, (huh!)
Hes got of a lot of punching
lines which, of course, youll
never know who will catch
made or mend.
Wait! Whos coming next? We always
see this teacher with her shadows because
shes a part of triplets characters at SCNHS.
This time, Ms. Emily G. Dimaunahan will have
to be
mentioned without these two in
this
paper. Not bad Sometimes, its
good
to have ones own identity; just
like her being soft-spoken and
tact Another Grade9 jewel,
shes a teacher who
the
students describe as easy to get
along
with.
Lets give way to the best Supremem
student Government adviser all over Quezon
(clap, clap, clap!) Hes a unique individual
in his craft, skills and not to mention, his curly
hair
which adds color to his personality.
This guy is a jack-of-all-trade:
leader, academician, dancer,
speaker, role player, writer,
Choreographer - name it,
youll have it? Maybe, theres
only one thing we shall be
waiting about him a partner in life(Yo!)
As the expression goes: last but not
the least- is Ms. Malani A. Mendoza. She
might not be that so visible to most students for
she
is in-charge of some records in the
office with the other teachers
assigned in it but mind you, once
she comes out, s hell rock your
world! Being a teacher in
physical education and the other
components of MAPEH, expect that shes also a
multi-talented mentor
Duties done! These are the teachers who made it in the list of valuable second

most of all, lovable. Thats why she thanks God for giving her the kind of learners who she considers
to be globally competitive ones each school year.
So what if she happens to handle students from out-of-this worldthose coming from all
walks of life and culture? May I quote Aishwarya Rai Bachchans words to which I agree and believe
in, students can achieve great things so I have set high expectations for them... Eventually, they could!

How else does she manage her temper in dealing with different kinds of students?

When I cant contain my temper, I just turn my back, take a deep breath and bring back my
composure. Hmmm stress-reliever! But this teacher strongly believes that the teachers are the

o teachers, no other professions. so the saying goes.

Just like the mythical5 players chosen in a basketball tournament, The
Golden Grains, the official publication of Sta. Catalina National High School
i n
English, asked the student body who among their teachers they think deserve to
be included. Theres only one criterion: a worthy second parent. Of course, this would root out
other reasons for the choice since becoming a parent means a lot of responsibilitiesthose done out
of love, not by force.
Commit to the Lord whatever you do and your plans will succeed.

This is our most valuable second parent-teachers motivational quote taken from the Holy
Book, Proverbs 16:3. Indeed, the line radiates in the life of our teacher. This consumes the personality of those whom she mingles with, from students to fellow teachers.
Teaching is really her first love. This has long been her dream since childhood days when
she used to teach her brother, sister and cousins with their assignments and other topics where they
find difficulty.
Aside from teaching, I do paper works and other assignments given, too. I also check on my
students to know how well they have performed and how their homeroom assignment is taken care of. I
hold remediations for beginning learners and reinforcement lessons for advanced learners during free
time. So, this completes her day.

MRS. ARSENIA P. JAVIER, has been teaching for 29 years now. Pretty tough,
huh! Time tested!
Maam Zeny is a high school graduated at Tayabas Western Academy in college taking
up Bachelor of Science in Education major in Mathematics and now a Master of Arts in
Teaching Mathematics.
After studies, she started teaching in her alma mater, TWA, for four months and
transferred at our school in October of 1986.
So, how is she as a teacher? simple but strict!, says one of her students. With this, we
might ask does a maam Zeny get angry too?

I do for some unavoidable reasons. But its in a way that I just want my class to learn what is
good for them and what they should do. I used to say, pasensya na kayo sa nanay ninyong maligalig,
hindi lang Math ang gusto kong matutunan ninyo kundi pati values na kailangan nyo sa pang-araw
-araw na buhay.

Isnt it hard to manage a class who had been so unruly for quite sometime, reprimanded
and yet you need to handle with utmost love while teaching afterwards? What do you do and
how?

By showing my love and concern to them. Sometimes by telling them motivational stories just
to transform their behavior and to catch their attention. I reiterate that they should learn something
before our class ends.

As always, what are the last words you always tell them?
Time is gold. (maam zeny and the interviewer recited at the same time and giggle!)
Indeed, this woman values what every learner must gain after four years of endeavor at
SCNHS as she ends the interview with her simple answer to the last question:
How does a maam Zeny know that she has given her best role as a
second parent to her students?
Being a blessing to others.
---ooOoo--The newest chief adviser of the Grade 10 is in! Once we see her roaming around, shes not
there to observe classes. Shes there to ensure that every reminder, requirement or information
must be disseminated to the G10 family.
Busy as a bee this is a fair description we could give to this lovely woman
who acts as the mother of all the junior high schoolers in their last year. But
did you know that what we have here is a certified Catalinian?
MS. ROSHEL R. BONCODIN is a graduate of our school in
1997 with Mrs. Melita Flestado as her adviser. Shes also a Citizen
Army Training (CAT) officer, Major S4-2nd Battalion to be specific
with our principal, Mr. Jessie V. Vasquez, as the then commanding officer.
Wow!a real treasure!
Southern Luzon Polytechnic College was her college home where she
graduated Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education major in Social Studies
in 2001. She also received her graduate diploma in Cultural Education in
Colegio de San Juan de Letran.
Was it really her dream to be a teacher? NO.
My friend and I took the entrance exam at the same time. She
took Education, and I planned to take Engineering or Accountancy.
After much deliberation, I took Education (hahaha!)

The realization came in clear when she started teaching at

Palakpak National High School, a remote area in Rosario,
Batangas. She was tested by time and pressure as she stood
by the students side in all endeavors as she did multi-tasks:
SSG adviser, librarian, chief adviser, faculty representative
for community projects and so on. The more she was challenged
and proved that she is indeed a teacher who, according to her,
must be an agent of change for the better.

I love challenges, anyway. I even enjoy teaching students

who are unruly though sometimes, I feel like giving up but I
refrain myself doing so. It should not happen. I cant. I know that
it will be a great achievement when I help hopeless children survive
and change for the better. I believe that they are good; lazy yes but with ample attention and encouragement, there might be a chance to help. What a positive outlook in life! Indeed, she is a jewel

thats worth-keeping; but not for so long. She needs to be taken out so her radiance be absorbed
and affect more and more teachers to do the same advocacy. But how do her students describe
her?

She is kind and humble, a good teacher. She does everything she could to share her knowledge.
She is that type of a mother who doesnt easily gets irritated though we are so unruly, quips Babylyn,

one of her students. This confirms what kind and who Ms. RRB is.
A heartwarming line that she gave us before ending the conversation struck our hearts:

strongest agents of positive change among our youth.

Now we ask what kind of a teacher she is. Shes not only a teacher or adviser figure for us. We

regard her as our second nanay. Though she would sometimes reprimand us with our wrongdoings, we
could feel the sincerity in her words and deeds; we could feel that everything she does is all for our own sake.
She is so supportive in all our endeavors. We could see her cheering us in almost all our fights in
academics, in extra curriculars or even in classroom tasks, says Glenda, one of her advisory students.

She does this because she believes that a teacher affects eternity; one never knows when his/her
influence stops. So, this passion (and not a profession) calls for so much dedication.
Asked of her inspiration in life, she smiles. Of course, it will always be heartwarming to inform
you that Ive got a very understanding husband and children. My husband is my strength; and he
likewise tells me about that. So, our bond is my inspiration

So we say, out of this family-oriented inspiration, we found a second parent in her!

---ooOoo---

Our next specimen is a La Sallista; graduated in 19811.

This valuable teacher has been teaching for 26 years. But did you know that teaching was
not her first choice then? According to her, she was just forced to be one
Of course, she learned to love the system when she started teaching at Sta. Catalina national
High School and met different kinds of students. She now says that teaching is a mission and at the
end of each teaching day, she sees to it that there must be something learned.
Funny, but MRS. LILIA Z. REYES is fondly called Liza. Is there any connection?
Well, people of Batangas where she finished her Masters Degree major in Administration, used to
call her; she never stopped them and so it went on that way. (ahmmm...tsk...tsk)
Anyway, maam Liza (so we start calling her this way, too) feels sad whenever she is in an
unpleasant working environment but feels happy and smiles with the true people her.
She believes that the essence of being a teacher is being a molder not only academically, but as a
whole person in all aspects of his/her personality, with the support of the parents, too.
Does a maam Liza get angry?
Yes. When I do, I usually keep silent; wait for how many minutes then remind my class
about my class rules. Afterwards, I continue teaching with concern.
Being the Master Teacher in the Science Department, she sees to it that students understand
the rudiments of Science and extend technical assistance to fellow teachers in the same field. Though
she is seldom seen in the limelight, she is best noted to bee very caring and supportive to her students.
So, what or who inspires her most to keep on nurturing children included in her science classes?
I pity those students who have no parents by their side to support and guide them in their
undertakings. I want them to remember that once there was a teacher who gave them utmost attention. At least this can help them not to be bitter individuals in the future.
What a touching mission to fulfill True to her words, her students proved to value every
word she gives them as she is remembered whenever an event or occasion gives opportunity to salute
teachers who have positively influenced them.
---ooOoo---

The lone male teacher in the list has come! In anon-the-spot question, students would
describe him the usual expression: tall, dark and handsome. No wonder, he got hooked on December
24, 2013 by an equally gorgeous Ms. Venus Pasno from Puting Kahoy Rosario, Batangas. (Hes
taken, guyz!) Comes October 30, his lucky charm- Derreck Thaniel- turns 1.
Now that he has a son to rear, the more he becomes more and more eager to teach, not only for
his own son but for his students who he first nurtured as his own. So hes in to teaching what about
it?
What you hope to be liked for tomorrow depends on the choices you make today!
This is his favorite quote which is made alive today hoping to be someone loved and liked by his
students because he chose to be simple, understanding and trusted by them. He seldom gets angry to
students for he practiced self-control.
MR. RODERICK H. BANOG is another product of SCNHS. He graduated in 1990
with Mrs. Nenita Indicio (now in US) as his adviser in 4 th year and Mrs. Zeny Javier in 3rd year.
Hmmm. Like second mother, like son--- both MVP2. According to him, he was just an
ordinary student then--- a silent, observant one. Teaching hasnt come to his mind that time.
Stepping to college, he chose Accountancy but he was a late-enrolee; so Education came in. He took
his Masters degree in Education major in Administration and Supervision at St. Francis of Assissi,
Las Pias.
It was his mom, Mrs. Levy Banog who was once SCNHS
faculty member, too, and now a retiree, who inspired him to
teach. True enough, he became more than what a teacher
could be. He inspires, advises, facilitates, motivates, instructs,
coaches,
etc. At his age, he has served asFaculty
Association officer, our schools
cooperative board member,
Juniors chief adviser, winning
coach in Super Quiz Bees and
trainer/playing-coach in
badminton tournaments.
He presently teaches
Technology and Livelihood
Education (TLE). So, does he
cook? Does the quote, the
closest way to a mans
heart is through his
stomach? Well, he is
not only a man he is
a teacher who
knows how to be
a real man. This
might be the
reason why his
partner in life
found him
responsible, kind
and loves to
cook his favorite

Hindi ako pumapayag na may maiwan ni isa man lang sa aking klase. Lahat gagawin ko para lang
silang lahat ay pumasa! (I wont allow anyone left behindI will do everything so that everyone

in my class passes.)

and this made our jaws drop (to the lowest level )
---ooOoo---

In 2007, SCNHS luckily absorbed a chinita, white-skinned mom who reveals the
following words when asked to describe herself as a teacher: I may not be a perfect teacher but at
least, my students has something learned after each day of class.

Born on the 22nd day of December, our second next motherly mentor started her
educational endeavor in the field of accountancy (huh!) at Tayabas Western Academy.
MRS. NENITA E. BRAGA is our Youth for Environment Organization (YES-O)
adviser, has been a science club adviser, a constant adviser of the graduating pilot section and holds
the title of being the seniors chief adviser for four years. This trust is reflected in a resembling trust
to her students as she comments about her students by describing her advisory class as a group of
students who are well-mannered, know how to accept mistakes, learn from doing, cooperative and

adobo! But its not this dish that will bring us closer to his heart but our promise to listen to his
lectures and pass the subject for our own sakean endeavor in which he will always be behind to
support us.
How is he as a teacher? Well, his students say that he simply does his tasks as assigned-- takes
time to have a one-on-one intimate talk to failing students, plans out possible solutions, talks to their
parents and does home visits.
What makes your lessons different from the usual routine?
Aside from the academics, I see to it that love, patience and values are integrated and imbibed
in my lessons, he positively points out. He states that coping with stress at work requires teachers to
leave problems at home but try to find solutions to it afterwards.
Thats it!

e have met once

oth-

We have seen each

er the second time

We have had the chance to be together in her

service car the third time
But my partner and I had never had the chance to
talk to her in person.
We have heard much about this lady leader of
Quezon We have seen lots of pictures of hers; we have
istened much of her talks over the radio; and we have seen
her life story with her husband on television But meeting
her in person is totally different.
We have had several occasions when she became our
schools guest speaker, administering officer during the
officers oath, inauguration of some donated materials.
Whenever we are introduced, she would smile but we never
had time to ask questions about some important issues and
concerns regarding her leadership being one of our
Provincial Board Members.
This time, we decided to get the chance she will
come; she will walk and/or run with us for a cause in time
for Alay Lakad-Takbo para sa Kalikasan. We will have
plenty of time
Questions, ready!
Ballpens, check!
Cameras, charged!
Self-confidence, set!

Weaknesses must
be strengthened;
confidence must
be developed.

Smile, flashed!
Hindi ko pinangarap maging sikat. (I never dreamt
becoming popular). This line struck us first. She admitted
she has been an introvert person until now. But since the
time calls her to come out of her shell, who is she to defy this
responsibility? She needs to go on and serve. According to
her, politics is not her way of becoming a known person. Rather, it will be a way to introduce a Great God who has
blessed her so much. Dreaming to create a God-fearing
community, she believes that God is by her side, so who will
be against her?

Before, she focused on her family, their business

and the church. Today, she extended her worldthe
community and the second district of Quezon as a provincial board member. There is a need to share Gods blessing
to the people.
day?

So, how does a MRS. ELIZABETH SIO start her

Prayer, she smartly answered with a smile. We

must start blessed so the community could see through our
blessed radiance HIS greatness and be blessed as well.
And have we started yet the programs we planned
for the goals set? Of course. She made emphasis on the
educational programs for the youth like us by starting book
donations to help schools especially the public one with the
sources of information to those who cant afford to buy their
own. Scholarships are now being pressed down to ensure
that quality education should not be left behind especially
the public schools; they must be able to compete with
private schools, too.
I am dreaming that we could propose a public
college in Candelaria, she reveals.
Even before this plan materialize, Ms. Beth has
already started sponsoring the very first Youth Leadership
Summit where hundreds of youth leaders were trained for
two day. The event was facilitated by the 85th Infantry
(SANDIWA) Battalion based in Dolores, Quezon.
The event aimed to develop moral values and the
sense of responsibility among teenagers. In this way,
hundreds of youth had the chance to understand the
complexities of the cruel world around us; thus, saving
them from possible bad influences around.
There, Board member joined each activity never
leaving any delegate unaware of what is happening She
discussed with the youth leaders some issues of concern,
played with them, posed on pictorials, prayed with them,
had an open forum with them, danced with then during the
socialization, ate with them during the dining period
Much to our surprise, she even accompanied some students
to the best that she could home; since the event lasted till
night!
She seems not to get tired during the summit. Even
the soldiers were so amazed with her enthusiasm.
We always want to feel young wherein we feel
strong; we can do anything we can for the better, she
quips (with a smile, again). Weaknesses must not hinder
us. Your Kuya Carding is the best example of that. He
might have those physical weak points but he is supportive
enough to inspire others that it will not be the reason to
stop achieving tour goals, right?

On the lighter side, we asked her how she

We saw the introvert shy smile in her as she

Let Me Be the One

it is to be, it is up to
me. I believe this to be
the
ten
most
powerful
two-letter words in English
Language. Let me tell you a story
from the book When your Past is
Hurting your Present written by
Sue Augustine.
While walking on the way
home, Mary and Donna stopped
at a store to buy beverages. The
lady behind the counter seemed
grumpy* and after Mary paid for
what she bought, the lady
snarled** at her, throwing the
change
at
her
direction.
Gathering it up, Mary smiled and
warmly said, Thank you very
much maam.
Have a nice
evening.
Donna was so shocked as
they walked away and asked
Mary why she is so kind to the
lady despite her inconsiderate
manner. Mary admitted that she
was not that way before but she
added, a while ago, I made a
decision not to allow other people
to determine my attitude and
govern my actions.
Reclaiming your inner
power has nothing to do with
gaining power over someone but
it is a tool for building and
restoring our own self. It is
something we can do only
through Gods enablement and
our own will to surrender all
things to HIM. Through our
blaming
and
complaining
attitudes, we lose this kind of
power.
In Genesis 3:11-13, God said
to Adam, Have you eaten from
the tree that I commanded you not
to eat from?
Adam answered, Yes, but it
was the womans idea!
Then God said, What is this
you have done? to which she
replied.
It was really not my fault. It
was this scheming serpent who
misled me.
So, Adam blamed Eve, and
Eve blamed the serpent, and the
serpent didnt have a leg to stand
on!
People have been playing
this kind of game from then on up
to now. We tend to blame each
other because we are afraid to
take the responsibility for our
thoughts, feelings and actions.
They are always blaming
circumstances for what they are.
It is about time to be
matured enough. Let us not look
for others to blame. Let us take
the responsibility in everything
we do; in everything we feel; in
everything we say. Let us stop
blaming and stop complaining for
all the wrong things that were
already done. Let us be a solution
-minded
rather
than
problem-oriented.
Before I end my speech, I
want to share with you this
powerful three-letter word I read
from the Bible in the book of
Colossians: Never hold grudges.

Love makes people inspired
But sometimes, people cry because of LOVE.
Some people believe in their destiny,
They find and hope easilyThey dont know whats happening--But they are not wondering(?)
I remember the days
When my crush talked to me:
All I could do is to laugh and smile(!)
Am I that inspired?
Time passed by
I remembered all the bad memories;
I felt so alone
Little tears came rolling
That time I wish to dieBut life is importanttill now Im still hoping
But I learned
That LOVE at first sight is not so true!

Safety First?... cleanliness next;

beauty soon! by Jeidelle V. Larosa
Cleanliness makes our
surrounding beautiful. But who
says beauty makes us the best
school? Some.
A beautiful surrounding should
be coupled with the sense of trust
that everyone within that clean
school is safe.
Which should come first, then?
None.
They should all come
together.
Beauty, cleanliness and safety
should always be everyones priority. Without these, bad things might
happen or worst, endanger lives.
Cleanliness and safety should
be considered in everyones place--at home, in school, or even in public
areas/places. A clean yet unsafe
surrounding doesnt make sense;
however, a safe yet dirty school will

also be incomplete. In doing human

activities, cleanliness and safety
should be prioritized.
As students, we need to know
the importance cleanliness and
safety during our stay in our school.
For example, proper disposal of
garbage results into clean and safe
place for everyone because this
garbage
can cause improper drainage, flooding during heavy rains, and pollution
that may affect the community.
This is one of the evidences a
strong partnership of safety and
cleanliness; and beauty to the latter.
To achieve cleanliness and
beauty within, safety should come
first. YES, school beautification is
nice; and cleanliness is good; but
safety is better Finally, putting

them all together is the BEST!

Safety is the administrators first
concern; cleanliness and beauty is
the students.

To KEEP RIGHT By April Cecillano

is our Right of way!
Keep Right: What is it?
To be at the right side is always
the right thing to do.
Even in the school pathways, still there are lots of problems
encountered. There are times that
many students and even teachers
cant reach their respective classrooms easily and peacefully. Why?
because of the traffic jam! There
are also times that students have
some trouble or arguments also
because the traffic exists. Why do
this kind of mess happen?... Its only
because students have their own
ways and whats the result? Misunderstanding!!! Its not nice to see
that even the little issues become
worse because of having this kind of
misunderstanding.

The KEEP RIGHT sign

boards could be a simple answer.
They are posted in the pathways, to
remind every Catalinian that we can
reach our assigned rooms with ease
even during rush hours if we stay at
the right side to avoid bumping over
those going the other way. Simple
rule but as a result, a hassle-free
and peaceful walking. No sharp
looks, no bad words, no physical
injuriesIn other words, we all
become responsible and worthy
Catalinians. It would not be difficult
to the students and also to the
teachers and even the school
personnel to reach their destinations.
A hand salute to the senior
students who had this project!

A bouncing TY by Joice Ann C. De Luna

to SPF supporters
Of course, it is a
heartwarming feeling to see
fellow students read, appreciate
and keep the newsletters where
The Golden Grains staffers deposited all the nerves to write
their articles.
After much
deliberations on what to write
about, submit the same to section
editors, receiving them back for
revision, correction or more
information; and finally, to the
adviser for approval who can
describe the feeling once the
article is seen printed in the
school paper with your name
ready for release and distribution
to the student body?
To create newspaper
entails a herculean task for us
student-writers who dwell in the
publication to work even during
wee hours in-between our class
schedules. What does it take to
come up with a single release?
It takes days (in our case, weeks
and even months) to complete an
article before the layouting
process.
Directly or indirectly,
we also help educate, interpret
issues and events in forming
public
opinion,
entertain,
safeguard the students rights by
being
the
watchdog
and
document significant school and
community activites. These are

the functions of a school

publication!
It is an understatement
to note that all schools produce
newspapers but R.A. 7079
(Campus Journalism Act) urges
Sta. Catalina National High
School, being a big autonomous
school, to do so. Thus, the staff
recognizes the support given by
responsible
students
who,
without being forced to pay their
Student Publication Fee (SPF),
willingly go to the Student
Publication Office (SPO) and
ask for a copy of the newspaper
in exchange for the payments
done.
Still, we pity those who,
despite several announcement
and issues of the newspaper 18
years in the making), still do not
know what is a publication fee.
How much more to those who
says, pabiling dyaryo! or
magbabayad ng SPO!
We hope to reiterate
what you are paying is a
publication fee mandated by a
republic act; youre not buying
anything. You are entitle to
have a copy of every issue of the
newspaper published once you
have paid the fee and you are not
required to buy anything.
Moreso, please do not
buy the school publication office

Who does the first move...?

Good deeds must be reciprocated
well. That is, to encourage good
deeds among the students
without being commanded to do
so.
Have you experience to greet
someone but he just ignored you?
Would you greet him/her again?
How shall we enjoy greeting our
mentors, if greeting them makes us
feel ignored?
Cheerfulness is one of the good
manners that we must have. Our
superiors push us to be so. Thus,
we are required to greet them, our
visitors, our teachers and anybody
else inside the premises of our
school.
Of course, not all of us do.
Different individuals have their own
reasons why. As for most, greeting
is intimidating since those whom we
greet do not greet us in return,
anyway. Others would even
comment: Ay, pahiya..! sipsip kasi.

Being a youth, there's a p

ossibility that we'll just stop doing
this good manner we become more
emotionally sensitive, we don't want
to feel rejected, we are so moody,
selfconscious. And because of
these, sometimes we misinterpret
others or they misinterpret us.
The Holy Scripture says, "...in
everything, do to others what you
would have them do to you, for this
sums up the Law and the
Prophets."(Matthew 7:12)
This
verse is similar to what Confucius
said "Don't do unto others what you
don't want others to do unto you.
Thus, if we want to be greeted by
our mentors, we must also greet
them. If you don't want to feel
ignored, don't ignore them.(Do to
others what you want others do to
you)
There must be a model. But
the question goes: good manners
must be seen from WHOM first?

Irresponsible Response
by John Kennedy Alcantara
They say that the
restrooms are mirrors of
personalities which use them.
Thus, if you want to see the true
personality of Catalinians, go
visit their restrooms in school.
Describe these comfort rooms
whether, thats what kind of
students we are.
I know that you know
what I mean. Why does this
happen especially in our school?
Who are responsible for the
cleanup? maybe the janitor/
janitress or my beloved fellow
students? It hurts but we became
irresponsible in cleaning these
areas. We dont remember to
give due respect to the next users
by simply throwing our tissues at
the right place and flush even a
pint of water into the bowl.
As students, it is our
responsibility to maintain the
cleanliness of our comfort rooms
and be responsible in using them
or SPO (where shall we stay?)
nor ask the adviser who happens
to be your teacher to sell you
with the paper during class
hours.
May I also take this
chance to inform the body that
the campus journalism act
provides that we pay the amount
of Php90 per school year in
exchange of all the issues that
will be published within the
school year.
This
school
year,

wisely. Dont wait for others to

do it for you. After all, we are in
a public school where everything
is offered by the government for
free so, lets maintain their
cleanliness.
We, students, are the
ones who should make the first
move of what we are going to do
to avoid disasters in our comfort
rooms right now. We can do it
together, if we have responsible
traits. Avoiding bad smell and
dirty places, making it beautiful
and good looking landmark will
be the first and foremost moves.
The true mark of an
SCNHS student who passed all
his/her subjects
is being
responsible person- inside or
even outside the classroom;
moreso, outside the campus.
With such remark, very
few will possibly pass this
school year.

however, we gave way to

another publication in Filipino,
Uhay. Therefore, the SPF will
be divided into two at Php45
each. Still, we both need to
provide you with copies of the
newspapers as you have paid
your dues.
And to those who
continuously do their duties and
responsibilities as students, a
bouncing thanks we salute
you!

Taya! . . . .This was the

But who can resist the
games and apps in our
present technologies right
now. I know that some
Catalinians still missed the
traditional games even we
have now technologies in our lives.
To update, let me give you two games now and before.
Who can remember the term bang and sak and the term maiba
taya. Bangsak is one of the traditional games of our Filipinos children before. It is usually played in some provinces in our country before. I remember
when I first played it-- It was an unforgettable experience!. Bangsak is
composed of two or more players. (But the more, the merrier!). It will require
you, called it, to find the others (considered opponents) who are hiding. If
you find them, you will say bang! like you have a gun to eliminate them
(exciting, isnt it?) And if your chance comes for you to hide, you better do it
good because in order to win in the game, youll have to attack the person
who will find you like you have a knife without seeing you and say the word
sak! (my own explanation)
Maybe, this game that is famous today, is its equivalent. It is a first
person shooter game in which players join either the terrorist team, or
become spectators. (I know youre already guessing what it is!) You got it!
(youre a certified 21st century striker!)

EICs NOTE: Here is an inspirational story about a lad
who once dreamt

Our youths of today enjoy playing with their

gadgets. They spend more time sitting at the corner
and entertaining themselves by playing a lot of
games found in their tablets, cellphones, laptops,
PSP, etc.
We can't deny the fact that most of the
children today including some of us find it hard to
socialize with others since we always spend our
play time alone with our gadgets. Most of our young
Filipinos don't even know how to play the games
adults used to play during their childhood days.
Just recently, our local government officials
has made a program to give way to the rebirth of
our traditional games and show what joy it gives
when played with the interaction that occurs among
players and even spectators. They called it
Palarong Lahi where they invited different schools
in town, elementary and high school, to participate
in the said program.
I'm very happy because I was chosen to be
one of the participants coming from our school. I
considered myself lucky because I got the chance to
experience how fun it is to play traditional games
like the TAYAKAD, a game where one needs to
balance and walk in bamboo posts.
At first, its hard but as the time passed by
and when I start learning how to walk through it, I
must say its a fun game indeed though I suffered
wounds in-between the fingers of my feet since Im
not used to play it.
Playing under a very hot sun was not a
hindrance for me and my teammates to enjoy and
win the game. I must say that playing outside is
more
enjoyable than playing inside a room
with your gadgets.
Filipino games must be played by the youth
of today so that it will not fade and everyone gets
the chance of experiencing how fun it is!
Its glad to know that even if our culture is
changing because of the rapid growth in the world
of technologies, our elders still care and wanted to
preserve the games that they used to play.
A salute to our municipal administrators!
Corporation. It was initially developed and released as a Half modification by Minh
Gooseman Le and Jess Cliffe Cliffe in 1999,
before Le and Cliffe were hired and the games
intellectual property acquired. It was first
released by Valve on the Microsoft Windows
platform in 2000. It is usually played by boys. The
varied objectives depend on the type of map youll
choose and these are the most usual ones: bomb
defuse, hostage rescue, VIP rescue. (not my own

explanation, taken from the net)

Counter Strike is a game today and

Bangsak is game before. Since I was able to
explain the first in my own, does that mean I enjoy
playing games before? Actually, they have
similarities to each other and they are both
enjoyable to play. (and I havent experienced
playing counter-strike!). Both of them are played
like you are in an army and both of them need
speed and focus.
Can you imagine that?! Even games before
are still alive today but in other form with the
use of our technology!
