INTELLIGENT DUSTBIN-AN IOT BASED APPROACH

Neha Hipparkar, Shafia Nasreen, Sharada Hibare

Abstract-The second most problem India is facing in today's generation after population crisis
is managing the garbage. Cleaning this garbage is an effective functionality of municipality
which is directly related to health in the affected area. A smart city is incomplete without an
smart dustbin. This paper describes the application of our model of Intelligent dustbin" in
managing the waste of an entire system. The infrared sensors attached to dustbin send data to the
raspberry pi model which causes to reboot the Linux operating system. Through GSM model the
data is sent to respective base stations that sends the garbage collector vehicle to the dustbin
location by shortest path possible.

Keywords-Infrared sensors, Raspberry pi, GSM model.

1. Introduction-Dustbin is a common and

a basic need everywhere. It is observed that
often the garbage get accumulated due to
irregular removal of garbage present in the
dustbin. Here we have figured out a new
model for the municipal dustbins which
intimates the centre of municipality for
immediate cleaning of dustbin. With the
already prevailing diseases, the open
containers are proving to be a breeding place
for germs. Traditionally, municipalities
operate on weekly routes to pick up trash
and recyclables on designated days,
regardless of whether the containers are full
or not. The project gives us one of the most
efficient ways to keep our environment
clean and green. In this Project, which is
based on IoT technology, we are creating
intelligent dustbins that are installed across a
given area that use the sensor technology to
detect and measure the waste inside the bin.
As the level of waste reaches the maximum

level, the dustbin buzzes and sends the

messages to the authorities of the concerned
area via sms that give the information about
the status and address of the bin.
2. Need for an Intelligent Dustbin
As we know Dustbins are not always
emptied on time. Garbage strewn across the
roads leads to unhygienic scenes and
increases the chances of diseases among the
inhabitants. Also, the animals also start
hovering around the garbage. Dustbins are
not attended because the municipal
authorities have specific time for collecting
garbage from the dustbins (like per day or
per week) depending upon the area or some
dustbins which are not full are attended.
This leads to wastage of fuel and time. Due
to these reasons, there needs to be a device
that could be attached to the dustbins that

would inform the authorities only when the

dustbin is full.

the number of texts they have received from

a particular area.

3. System Design

The sensors are activated and stay idle until

garbage is thrown in the dustbin. As soon as
people throw garbage inside the dustbin,
sensors check whether the garbage level has
reached 50% level or not. If it didnt, it stays
idle. As soon as it reaches half the level of
dustbin, it sends the information to
Raspberry Pi microcontroller which runs the
program of sms50.py. A text is sent as
information that the dustbin has reached its
half level. As it reaches to 80% and above
sms80.py is run thus sending a warning
message that the dustbins need to be
collected. The authorities gather the
information of all the dustbins in that area
and send their garbage collecting vehicle
thus clearing out the garbage from them.

There are two infrared sensors that are

attached to the dustbin. One is attached at
the half level of the dustbin and the other
sensor is attached a little below the rim of it.
The half level sensor is for sending the
message that it has reached that level and the
other one is for when the dustbin is full. The
Raspberry Pi and the GSM are connected to
each other via port no. The sensors are
connected to the Raspberry Pi via port no.
The slot is present in Raspberry Pi for power
supply.

AN INTELLIGENT DUSTBIN MODEL

4. Principle and Working

The Dustbin is attached with the
Microcontroller Raspberry Pi Model B and
two infrared sensors (one that detects 50%
level of garbage and the other that detects
80% and above garbage) which are
connected to the GSM modem that helps in
sending the information through text
messages to the control room where the
concerned authorities send the Garbage
collecting vehicle (GCV) depending upon

5. Conclusion
This project helps in creating the awareness
amongst the citizens to keep the city clean,
helps in improving the general knowledge of
the citizens and also may give attractive
offers to the citizens. The dustbin created
completes its main objectives of tackling
waste management and appealing authorities
to take up the action. It also urges the
citizens to take up the responsibility of
cleanliness so that they can remove the
waste and dispose it at a safe place
preventing the dustbin to pile up and pollute
the area where people are residing. The
project overall creates an interactive and
user friendly devices that reduces the work,
time and energy involved in the waste
management process compared to the
previous system that were implemented
where manual labor and fuel wastage was
more. Using this type of system in the
country will help the Indian government to
run the Swachh Bharat Campaign more
efficiently and effectively. The system
remains energy efficient and serves its
purpose.
