ED 321 Self-Assessment

Planning and Preparation (AEA: Conceptualization, DiagnosisWTS: 1,7DISP: Respect Responsibility)

Explain and defend the decisions you made in choosing your objectives and the
assessment tools/strategies for this lesson. Even if the lesson was given to you to teach,
you must consider the effectiveness of the objectives and assessments.
I was given the class book and my CT and I discussed what the students should know.
She did not want me digging too far in the content because this was a new unit. The
objective was: Students will create a diagram showing the components of
the Earths atmosphere. I wanted the students to create something
that they could study from after talking about the different components
of the earths atmosphere.
Classroom Environment (AEA: Coordination, Integrative InteractionWTS: 2,3,5DISP: Respect,
Responsibility)

What were the discipline issues that presented themselves during the teaching of this
lesson? How did you anticipate these and handle them?
- Some of the discipline issues that occurred where students not using the book to dig into
the information. I wanted the students to do a little bit of the thinking on their own and
pair share. Many of the students stayed on task and really enjoyed talking both in small
groups and as a whole.
Instruction (AEA: Communication, Coordination, Diagnosis, Integrative InteractionWTS: 2,3,4,5,6,7DISP:

Reflection), Professional Responsibilities (AEA: Communication, Integrative InteractionWTS: 10DISP:
Collaboration, Communication)

After teaching the lesson and analyzing student work, describe how your decisions
impacted student learning. How do you know? How well did your assessment connect to
the lesson objectives? Are there changes you would make or things you could have done
differently?
- Based on my first lesson taught I knew it was a good idea to use the overhead to show
students what their diagram would look like. I had an example that was provided half
way through if needed [on my second time teaching this lesson]. My assessment
connected to the learning objective however I could have had an exit slip for the students
to extend their thinking as well as to provide me with evidence that my lesson was
successful.

Consider student learning as you reflect on your teaching of this lesson. Explain how the
evidence you obtained in your lesson (assessment) demonstrated the degree to which all
students achieved your objectives.
- I have created a lesson where students are able to use the book, peers and myself to create a
useful diagram that they can study from. Creating a diagram is like taking notes however is
more interactive in which students can add their own touch to their notes. I had an example that
students could look at and get ideas from how to organize it, however the information they put
on their diagram was entirely up to them. I also questioned the students and had them repeat
the directions so everyone was on the same page.
Professional Responsibilities (AEA: Communication, Integrative InteractionWTS: 10DISP:
Collaboration, Communication)

Explain how you incorporated feedback from your cooperating teacher and supervisor, if
applicable, to the planning/teaching of this lesson. What decisions did you make based on
feedback received?
-

I incorporated feedback from my supervisor on my second lesson when teaching this

lesson. I used the overhead and asked questions as the students were working more
[beginning, middle and end] I wrote down the components of the earth on the black
board on the side of the room to make sure the students had them correct [I also put
them on the overhead].

I walked around the room to make sure students were on task and encouraged them to
share their diagrams. I also started off with a joke so the students could get ready to
learn and to get my attention!
