Treatment For UTI

So what evil forces are at work here when you are suering like that? Your
urinary system is made up of your urethra, which carries urine out of the bladder
when you pee, your bladder, which holds your urine, your ureters, which carry
urine from the kidneys to the bladder, and your kidneys, which lter waste from
the blood to produce urine. A UTI happens when bacteria makes its way up the
urethra. This can happen in any number of ways you hold in urine instead of
going to the bathroom, having a catheter, and for women not peeing after
intercourse increases the risk. But no matter the case the result is the samemisery. If your UTI goes on for more than a few days or gets worse, it is
important to see your doctor. If the infection spreads through your urinary
system and to your kidneys, you can end up with a nasty situation on your
hands. But to ght them o in the beginning, here are some home remedies for
UTIs that can help get things owing smoothly (and painlessly) once again.

When it comes to herbs that ease UTIs, here are the main
properties to look for:
Anti-microbial properties: Helps to wipe out the bacteria causing the infection.
Diuretic properties: Diuretics are used to treat a number of problems, and work
by increasing the amount of sodium your kidneys excrete in urine. When they
excrete sodium, they take water along with it, and the amount of uid in your
blood goes down. Less uid means less pressure on the arteries, this is why its
used to treat high blood pressure. In the case of UTIs we just want to encourage
an increased amount of urine to keep ushing out bacteria and relieving
discomfort.

Anti-inammatory properties: When the lining of the urethra becomes inamed

it can cause serious discomfort. By lessening the irritating inammation, you can
relieve the associated pain. Its no fun feeling scared every time you need to pee.
Anti-spasmodic properties: Anti-spasmodics can help relieve any painful spasm
or cramp caused by a UTI. Generally a spasm takes place in the bladder.

1. Drink Water-A lot of Water

This may not sound like the most extraordinary remedy, but it is one of the most
important things you can do when you have a UTI. It can help ush out bacteria,
and (almost) more importantly, it gives you something to actually push out when
you pee! A lot of home remedies for urinary tract infections are drinks because
you should always be ushing uid through your system to give it a helping hand
in getting rid of the nasty bacteria.
You will need
-An ice cold glass of fresh water
Directions
Drink like a sh stranded in the desert at the rst hint of an infection. Get your 8
glasses, and then some more. Keep clearing out your urinary tract and you may

2. Go Pee!
It may sound obvious, but when you need to pee-UTI or not- do it! If you hold it
in, you increase the chance that bacteria will develop and multiply and cause an
infection. If you do have a UTI, every time you pee you get out a little bit more of
that bacteria. Even though it can be uncomfortable, peeing every chance you get
is a vital part of recovering.

3. Drink Soda
No, not soda as in a sugary soft drink, soda as in baking soda, that miraculous
substance that can help anything from heartburn to, of course, UTIs. Baking
soda is an alkaline substance-the opposite of acidic-which means it can help
neutralize or lessen the acidity of your urine. If you nd yourself resisting the
urge to pee because of a burning sensation, baking soda can help ease the
discomfort.
You will need
-1 teaspoon baking soda
-8 ounces of fresh water
Directions
Stir the baking soda into the water until it dissolves, and then drink the whole
glass. Do this rst thing in the morning. Dont do this for more than a week, or if
you are trying to avoid salt, since baking soda is high in sodium.

4. Enjoy Parsley Water

Aside from the fact that it makes a wonderfully refreshing after dinner drink,
parsley water can help relieve a urinary tract infection and speed up the healing
process by acting as a diuretic. Diuretics are used to treat a number of problems,
and work by increasing the amount of sodium your kidneys excrete in urine.
When they excrete sodium, they take water along with it, and the amount of uid
in your blood goes down. Less uid means less pressure on the arteries, this is

why its used to treat high blood pressure. In the case of UTIs we just want to
encourage an increased amount of urine to keep ushing out bacteria and
relieving discomfort. Parsley is thought to work by inhibiting a Na+-K+ (sodium
and potassium) pump. By inhibiting the reabsorption, sodium levels rise. To
balance out the concentration, kidneys excrete more sodium in the urine. More
sodium means more water which means an overall increased output of urine.
You will need
-Roughly 1 cup of fresh parsley OR 2 tablespoons of dried parsley
-1-2 cups of water
Directions
Bring water to a boil and add the parsley if you are using fresh-which is
preferable in my opinion. Reduce the heat so it simmers steadily and let the
leaves infuse the water like this for 6-10 minutes. Strain the leaves out and drink
the water hot. If its a hot summer day, pop it in the fridge for refreshing parsley
iced tea.
If you use dried parsley, simply place it in a cup of boiling water, cover, and steep
for 8 minutes before straining and drinking.

5. Chew Some Celery Seeds

Celery seeds also act as a diuretic, due mainly to one of the constituents of celery
oil, butylphthalide. If parsley water just isnt your thing, chewing a handful of
celery seeds can help increase the production of urine. If you want to get some
more uid, make celery seed water (follow the method for dried parsley.)
You will need
-A handful of celery seeds
Directions
Once or twice a day, snack on celery seeds right after a meal-it can also help with
digestion, so why not? If you do this daily, some anecdotal evidence suggests it
can help prevent UTIs.

6. Mmm Cucumbers
This is an easy one for me-I love cucumbers! I dont know why, but theyre one of

my favorite snacks. While other kids at lunch were busy swapping candy bars, I
was eyeing the cucumber slices. Thanks to their high water content, cucumbers
are a great way to get to get extra uid through your system when you nd
yourself having a hard time drinking enough water.
You will need
-1 cucumber, sliced
Directions
Rinse and slice a cucumber-enjoy!

7. (Maybe) Avoid the 4 Cs

Chocolate, citrus, carbonation, and caeine-these are 4 things that you should
avoid if you nd yourself getting UTIs frequently. All of them can irritate the
lining of the bladder, and potentially make it easier for bacteria to adhere. Citrus
will increase the acidity of your urine, which will make it even more painful to
pee. When possible, try to steer clear of as much of these as you can-its not
easy, but it can make life more bearable. On the other hand, some people can
nd citrus actually helps, hence the maybe in the title.

8. Use Heat
Its not just peeing that hurts when you have a urinary tract infection-the
inammation and irritation can cause a constant, nagging discomfort that makes
you feel painfully cramped up. When this happens, applying heat over your
bladder can bring some serious relief. The gentle warmth will relax your muscles,
melting away the pain caused by spasms or inammation.
You will need
-A hot water bottle (or something similar)
Directions
Fill up your bottle with water that is hot, but still comfortable to the touch. It
should be toasty not burning hot. It shouldnt feel like a hot hard lump, but
rather feel like a water bed. This way, the surface of the bottle can lie atter than
if it was bulging and rounded with water. Wrap it in a dishtowel and lie down,
placing it right over your bladder. You can lightly rest your hands on it to increase

contact, but dont press on it-when youre so uncomfortable it can be tempting to

try and push the pain away, but it doesnt work. Leave the bottle on for as long
as needed.

9. Ginger Tea
No list dealing with any condition that involved any kind of inammation would
be complete without ginger. Its chemical make-up allows it to block
prostaglandin synthesis, a process which creates little messengers (aptly called
prostaglandins.) Prostaglandins communicate about a variety of biological
processes, such as inammation. They also transmit pain signals to neurons. It
can therefore help to prevent inammation, reduce current inammation, and
reduce pain. This is the same process that OTC anti-inammatory medicationsjust without all the nasty side-eects!

11. Cranberry Juice

Cranberry juice is bit further down than you might expect on a list of home
remedies for a UTI, but its helpfulness is not set in stone as much as people
seem to think. The idea behind it is that the bacterium that causes UTIs have
mbria (hair-like) appendages-that make it possible to cling onto the lining of the
urethra. The combination of acidic substances in the juice may make it harder for
the mbria to stick to things, thus reducing chance of infection and/or making it
harder for bacteria to multiply. Studies seem to show that it does indeed help,
however, it is the most eective on women who have had UTIs before, or suer
reoccurring infections. You also need to drink a decent amount of it to get the
eects, and many people in the studies withdrew because they found
themselves with a stomachache. All of that being said, its worth trying-and you
may just nd that it really does work for you.
You will need
-Cranberry Juice
Directions
If possible, get real cranberry juice, or at least juice that isnt loaded with sugar.
Drink a full 8 ounce glass three times daily. To potentially prevent infections,
drink 1-2 daily.

12. Start Feeling Blue

Blueberries are from the same genus as cranberries, Vaccinium, and may also
help ward o potential UTIs by aecting the mbria of the bacteria trying to
attach itself to the urinary tract. Blueberry juice isnt as easy to come by as
cranberry juice (and is usually mixed with things like grape or apple juice), so try
consuming these tasty berries whole instead.
You will need
-1-2 cups fresh blueberries
Directions
Rinse your berries and enjoy them daily. They make the perfect addition to just
about any breakfast; I absolutely love them in oatmeal.

13. Hot, Hot, Horseradish

Originally from Europe and a member of the cabbage family, horseradish is
known for spicy, pungent, sinus-clearing spread made from the white roots of
the plant. A natural compound in the plant, allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), has a

strong antimicrobial eect. While cranberries and blueberries may be

bacteriostatic, meaning they inhibit the reproduction of bacteria, AITC is
bactericidal, which means it kills bacteria outright. It does so by attacking the
cellular membrane of the bacterium, making it impossible to be viable or survive.
You will need
-1/2 teaspoons fresh horseradish (root)
-A grater
-A glass of water or milk
Directions
Grate the fresh horseradish, and start by taking 1 teaspoon twice a day. The max
dosage is 1 teaspoons three times daily, stopping if stomach upset occurs. If
you have a hard time with the spice, a glass of water or milk nearby can help. I
nd milk to be preferable as water can sometimes seem to spread the spice
around!

14. Cream of Tartar & Lemon

This is an old home remedy, not a shiny this-new-study-just-found type of
remedy, but I love it anyways. Sometimes these old gems work better than
anything else you can hunt down, and sometimes they dont make any dierence
at all. Cream of tartar may work because it changes the pH of your urine, making
a less-friendly environment that makes it harder for bacteria to thrive in. Add in a
bit of lemon or lime juice for vitamin C, and youve got a powerful bacteria killing
concoction that can dry a UTI right up.
You will need
-1 teaspoons cream of tarter
-Lemon or lime juice (preferably fresh)
-Fresh water
Directions
Stir cream of tartar into -1 cup of warm water. Add a dash of lemon or lime
juice, and drink 1-2 times a day. This can also help prevent UTIs when taken daily.

Im living in Peru for one week. I have suered chronic UTI for years with antibiotic resistant bacteria.
My urethra is so inamed that I actually bleed. Antibiotics cause a horrible cycle.
I met a Shaman who told me to drink clean water, room temp every morning and evening with the
juice of one LIME AND LOCAL HONEY to taste. In 4 days I could not believe the change in my body !
The discomfort was gone , my urine was clear, the frequent urgency was gone. I was more able to
empty my bladder.
I just am not clear if I should use this as a preventive every day or only when I have symptoms. I
faithfully take a cranberry sublime by daily and eat allot of Ginger. I might add the parsley tea. Thank
you for this article!

I love your solutions! In recent years I have been dealing with bladder and kidney infections and its
great to see more options than drinking cranberry juice. Hybiscus tea is a great remedy too given to
me by my acupuncturist. Drink as many as you can. I did have a couple alarm bells ring with the
parsley tea, and it is only through experience that I learned this, it is VERY dangerous for pregnant
women and can cause miscarriage. Especially combined with vitamin C, which is highest in things like
cranberry juice.

I have not had many UTIs , but I have had enough to know they hurt like the dickens and you want
nothing more than relief. U will literally try ANYTHING. Water is GREAT but i was told by a little old lady
one time to add lemon juice from a whole lemon to a whole glass of warm water. It was like magic the
next time i actually had to pee for real it helped. I felt 100% better. Try it! It is not the best tasting thing
in the world if you dont like lemon but like i said u are willing to try anything. So try it I swear by it now
and I start drinking it as soon as i feel a burn!

Bv is normally caused by being to clean or inserted irritations, try avoiding using
tampons as they are the cause of many cases of bv and of course my own, also when
washing use a no scented body wash or just plane bath/shower water! Unfortunately

bv is a regular thing and will stay for the rest of your life but if you stick to avoiding
scented body washes and tampons, it should stay away! Also contraception can be a
big cause too, such as condoms, the coil, the mini pill!

Drinking concord grape juice is a recommendation that came to me from a urologist. For years now,
whenever I or my children come upon a UTI we drink up (not cocktail or plain grape juice but usually
the Welchs brand) along with plenty of water and the symptoms resolve. Ive never had much luck
with cranberry juice but this helps every time with no need to visit the doctor.

Its nice to nally see a helpful list of natural remedies online. After struggling with back to back UTIs
and having antibiotics become resistant, I started drinking more water, cut out most sugar, soda and
coee, took cranmax daily and was able to go 1 year and 4 months without getting another UTI.
UNFORTUNATELY, Im here commenting because I just got another one. I can tell you that taking
enchinachea at the onset of one has helped me bounce back several times and even beat it twice.
Whenever I take it and have a urine test done it will always shows a spike in white blood cells but
comes back negative for bacteria. Doctor thinks its because the enchinachea is ghting it so much
that it keeps it from growing. Just ran to the health food store to try some of the suggestions above.
Thank you! Oh, a few other suggestions Ive stumbled across but havent tried: uva ursi, pipsissewa
and d-manose.

I have an awful UTI right now, and cannot go longer than 5 minutes without feeling the
urge to go. Burning, cramping, stinging, gritting my teeth wow these things are awful! I
have been suering with them since I was very young, and am also antibiotic resistant. I
was overjoyed when I thought I found a natural solution sometime last year, I started
steeping Uvi Ursi leaves as a tea every day, only to end up at the doctor with a new
stomach condition. Upon further research it is warned that this herb can cause
stomach irritation. I ended up having to have an endoscopy to rule out a bleeding ulcer.
Although these remedies are natural, it does not mean that they do not have side
eects. Just wanted to get that out there for others to see. I am also a nurse, and prefer
to the use of CAM therapies over conventional medicine, and have had to learn the
hard way that ALL MEDICINAL HERBS have side eects, and should be used with
caution. I am trying the lemon water right now wish me luck!

Take a hot bath, as hot as you can stand it. Do not use any scented or antibacterial
products. The best thing is just water. I start with about an inch of warm water and
gradually add in HOT water. It turns my skin very red, but it helps a lot. It also helps
with other aches and pains. While you are in there also drink a couple cups of warm
water or parsley tea. Another thing I use is water with apple cider vinegar. Use about 2
teaspoons to 8oz. of water. I sweeten it with stevia to make it palatable. It taste like
sweet and sour. Use honey if you dont have any natural sweeteners or drink it straight
if you can.

You may not currently have any watermelon seeds either but when you have the next
watermelon instead of throwing away those seeds keep them and dry them out to
make tea next time a UTI rares up. Just break up a few (maybe 5-6) seeds and steep in
cup of hot water ve or so minutes, strain out seeds and drink. It doesnt taste like
watermelon or really anything but I usually start feeling better before my tea is
nished. Repeat as often as you wish.

Uva Ursi has been used for hundreds of years in many cultures. If you feel a UTI just beginning, it can
be very eective to use Uva Ursi and avoid having to take antibiotics. Ive done this in pill form, but my
preferred form is a liquid Tincture available at health type shops. The best is a Swiss one by A. Vogel,
and its been around over 90 years. Taking 15 drops in water three times a day works wonders. Of
course you might want to check with your doctor rst. Also this one has echinacea as a secondary
ingredient and they caution people who have allergies to the daisy family.

I could do to get rid of this? Please and Thank You.

Cierra I went to the doctor and they told me the reason my utis were so frequent was
because I had poop backed up in me and it was causing bacteria down there, take daily
ber supplements/ this is the most likely way to stop your utis is too clear your system.
If this doesnt work, id try lemon and water , and cranberry supplements. If that doesnt
work go to the doctor!! The medicine I take works, amoxicillin, it works really well, you
take it for about 5-10 days depending on what your doctor says. If they keep coming
back, it is probably bc of poop, or your hygiene may not be good, or you probably
should drink more water, stay o of soda, caeine , and citrus. I dont drink a lot of
soda or coee anymore, and it works to not drink them!!

Water! Water, water, water, water. As much water as you can possibly squeeze into your body, all day
long! Mix that with a high dose of vitamin c every day and a bit of cranberry juice. If the pain bothers
you, use heat. I have found this is the single most eective thing, and I have utis recurring. I have
done the antibiotics thing and it just doesnt work as well as the natural treatments.

Number 9, the Ginger Tea, is a little misleading as a potential cure based on your description. From
what you say it is not curing anything only relieving the pain, or masking symptoms.
That might not be good in this situation as it could allow the infection itself to get worse without the
symptoms getting worse. That could result in a relatively simple infection becoming more complicated
Thanks for the other tips. I like that you dont proclaim natural remedies to be the only way to go, your
advice seems moderate and sensible.

If you are able to stomach it.. mix 1 shot of apple cider vinegar (pure with the mother) with 8 oz of
water and drink it every morning.. its absolutely awful, but it naturally balances out your ph levels and
does wonders for your body.. including clearing up utis. I always have something sweet to stick in my
mouth right after.. like a piece of candy or fruit.. you might need to hold your nose lol. Also, if you
soak in a hot tub with about 7 drops of essential tea tree oil, that will draw the infection out as well.

I have been getting UTIs for the last 23 years. Have been told many things over the years, Mine are
always do to intercourse with my husband of 25 years. We have both been tested to rule out any
other problems, I always make sure I urinate after intercourse and even shower but still I manage to
get a UTI. Have always just immediately gone to Dr. but worried I will become antibiotic resistant if
this keeps happening and I keep seeking conventional methods of treatment. I am in the middle of a
UTI at this moment and decided to change my way of helping myself. Last night I used the Parsley Tea
WOW! When I had to urinate at 2 this am it was no problem. Even now I am feeling better, just
wondering if this actually cures the problem or masks it. Should I still seek Dr. help?

creating problems for you. Ive always found that when I am able to actually get
something out when I go, I not only feel better but the issue clears up faster. However if
youre concerned, its always a good idea to talk to your doctor. The biggest concern
with a UTI is it spreading eventually to the kidneys and become a serious problem. I
hope you continue to feel better, and that some of these remedies continue to help!

Hi there, Im not a doctor, just speaking from experience.
Personally Im very sensitive to antibiotics and usually after taking them I get
Candidiasis, which has the symptom you describe: lots of itching, so it is possible that
you no longer have an UTI, but the meds you took have given you Candidiasis, if I was
you I would go to the doctor to be sure of what it is.
Woke up with an UTI today, and am roaming the Internet in search of alternative
treatments because Im dreading the eects that come after I take antibiotics

I am surprised that people avoid cranberry juice because, they say, its too hard to
drink enough and because it has too much sugar. I recommend buying real
cranberry juice, which doesnt taste sweet at all. In fact it is so pungent that it
tastes like a strong medicine. I drink just 2 to 4, or as many as I can tolerate, shotglass-sized glasses per day when I have a UTI. Pure cranberry juice seems
expensive, but it really isnt. A few pints to a quart costs between 8 and 12 dollars,
but since no water is added a little goes a long way. I imagine theres less than a
shot of cranberry juice in an eight-ounce glass of those cranberry juice cocktails
people buy. Sometimes Ill drink a shot a day for maintenance; and sometimes Ill
follow the shot with a tall glass of water or other drink because the real juice is
really pungent and dry. If you cant nd undiluted cranberry juice in your
supermarket, I recommend looking for it at Whole Foods or a health-food store.

I have been having very painful urination for the last 4 days now. I have never had it before. I am
travelling overseas so I would love to hear more about ways to naturally cure my painful urination
other than medication.

Hi! Little old lady here who started getting UTIs last year after hurting my back (spondylolesthesis). I
know there must be some connection. Ive tried the antibiotics but was looking for home remedies
since the doctors oce charges $100 to come in for a test. Thank you so much for not only your
suggestions, but for the women who took the time to comment here with their own experiences, very
helpful to everyone. Women helping women is one of the most valuable ways we can learn, and each
additional comment is useful. Thank you!

I have just gotten my second UTI and im only 18. I have a constant burning, even when Im just sitting
or laying down. The only thing that I have found that relieved the burning was the hot water
treatment, holding it in the pubic bone or even a bit lower to where the burning is helped within
minutes. Thank you for all your advise!

My youngest daughter gets a lot of utis. The pediatrician has told me to add some baking soda to a
few inches of water in the tub and let her sit in it for 15 minutes or so. Shes 16 now and has been
doing it for yearsit works! She is a vegan now so avoids pop, sweets, junk food etc but still gets
them. I wish we could gure out how to stop it altogether but until then Ill continue to keep a box of
baking soda in the bathroom cabinet for her. Best wishes!

For the UTi treatment, can you please guide on the horseradish treatment. IS it to be taken cooked or
uncooked, I have always taken it after cooking, however the way its written on the website it seems
like it needs to be taken without cooking. Would appreciate if you can clarify.

Im 73 with a history of UTIs. I am antibiotic resistant. I make a health drink with 1/4 c. freshly ground
ginger, juice from 4 lemons, 1/8 c. fresh mint leaves, kale (a handful), and a whole cucumber. I grind it
all up, add one gal. water and refrigerate overnight. This lasts me four or ve days. (I strain before
drinking, and put pulp back in water. Well worth the twenty minutes it takes to make. A gallon each
week does the trick for me.
Thank you for your wonderful ideas.

I am suering from a UTI as we speak. Ive been up since early yesterday and have taken ibuprofen
600mg tablet & have already put down 4 full glasses of h20 in the last hour & 1/2. Like many of the
other women on here, Ive suered from chronic UTIs for years and geeze they are so painful. I nd it
useful to drink cranberry juice & loads of water. I actually do not drink sodas as I dont care for them
but I love coee. Im not sure of the cause of this one because it happened so quickly with just dull
backaches then I couldnt pee. I pray for all of you women that suer UTIs and i will be trying the
essential oil tree tree bath soaking as soon as daylight hits and stores open.

I tried explaining to my husband that condoms could cause this to happen and he didnt listen and
now that I have one he doesnt care at all. He has never had one and doesnt understand he just
thinks its like when you pregnant and have to pee all the time. I tried explaining it and he calls me a
hypochondriac. This sucks
