Guiding Questions: Document B

1. (Sourcing) What would you predict the authors perspective will be on the
Stamp Act?
I predict that Will Alfred perspective about the Stamp Act was that he didnt
like it because he didnt think they put taxes on the important things that
people buy. Like beer, people are getting drunk because there buying beer,
there buying beer because its cheap, theres no taxes on it.

2. (Sourcing) Is it reliable? Why? Why not?


I think it is if the letter was still visible

3. What happened in Boston according to this article?


There was a mob in Boston towards the Stamp Act before it was even in
effect.

4. Why was the author surprised?


The author was very surprised about the mob because not everyone
reads the newspaper, only certain groups buy them

5. Who reads the newspapers, according to the author?


The only people who buy and read the newspaper are the rich people, and
its only affecting them

6. According to this document, why were colonists upset about the Stamp
Act?
The colonists were upset about the Stamp Act because they had to pay
tax for paper and more.

1. (Sourcing) Who wrote this, and what is his job? Does he side with England
or with the colonists? How do you know?
The author that wrote this was named, John Hughes and he was a stamp
collector in Philadelphia

2. (Contextualization) Based on his account, whats going on in America in


1766? How has the Stamp Act affected him personally? Provide evidence
from the document to support your answer.
The leaders of the riots were the people from the Presbyterian and they
were the leaders of all the bad things in the newspapers. He is threatened
by verbal messages and anonymous letters.

3. Do you believe his account? Give one reason why you would trust his
account and one reason why you might not trust his account.
I would trust this account because we could probably look for old
newspapers

4. (Corroboration) How does the account in this document compare to the


accounts in Documents A and B? Do you think most colonists were upset
about the Stamp Act, or do you think a few leaders riled up everyone?
This document is similar to the others because it is talking about the riots
toward the Stamp act. think that if the leaders werent putting all these
bad thoughts about the act, then it wouldnt be so crazy.

Use all three documents to answer the following questions.
1. Why were colonists upset about the Stamp Act?
Because the Stamp act put taxes on things that were cheap, like paper.

2. Was the Stamp Act an unreasonable and unfair tax?


The Stamp Acts were a prime example of taxation without representation which leads to the
Revolutionary War. The colonists had no say in the taxing, which made it very unfair.

3. Were the British violating colonists rights?


No, because in their birth right privileges of a Briton it says he cannot be
taxed but by a parliament in which he is represented.

4. How were the colonists behaving in response to the Stamp Act?


They formed a riot toward the stamp act and they were writing horrible
things on the newspapers.

5. Some historians have argued that the American Revolution happened


because a few rich leaders riled up all the poor people. Do these
documents provide evidence for argument? Is that evidence believable?
Yes, it says in Doc.B that the people from the Presbyterian were the head
of these riots and the bad things mentioned in the newspapers.
