The Art Behind the Music: Day 4

1. Time Needed: 50 Minutes
2. Materials Needed: Scenes from The Louve by Normal Dello Joio, markers,
colored pencils, crayons, paper, scissors, other various art supplies.
3. Learning Objective(s):
Central Focus for the Week: Students will learn to associate artwork
with classical band literature. They will play Scenes from The Louve
by Normal Dello Joio and experience programmatic music first hand. In
other days of the week we will look at the first four movements and look
at art that is in the louve and how that can be represented in the music
Dello Joio wrote.
Day 4 Objectives:

Students will play the finale from the Dello Joio.


Students will analyze and reflect upon their band music.
Students will create artwork to represent the finale.
Students will cooperate in groups.

Language Demands: Students will have to ANALYZE the movement of


the work and reflect upon what the music sounds like to them. They will
then CREATE a visual representation of what they think the final
movement means to them and what Dello Joio might have seen.
4. Assessment(s): Students will correctly play the finale, analyze and reflect upon
their band music to create artwork project, and cooperate well in their groups.
5. Personal Objective(s): I want to spend equal time with each group helping them
come up with art ideas.
6. Procedures:
a. Anticipatory Set

i. Greet the class as they enter the room. The begin working on their
daily theory workbooks as they enter the room.
ii. After 5 minutes of theory work have them put their books away
and get bring up their instruments.
b. Warm Ups
i. Begin with breathing in 4, out 4, in 4, out 8, in 4, out 12, in 4 out
16 etc.
ii. Play C major chromatic Remington exercises, get air moving,
begin listening skills, and work on balance and blend.
iii. Play C major scale, tutti whole notes, tutti quarter notes, 3 parts
iv. Tune! Clarinet play a concert Bb
v. Silent Night Chorale, play chords in tune, balance, and good tone.
During this time let students get percussion equipment ready.
c. Dello Joio Finale Rehearsal
i. Listen to this movement
ii. Read through this movement, help students where needed
iii. Ask students what adjectives they would use to describe this
movement (light, bouncy, driving, elegant, gallant, etc.)
iv. Work on trouble spots, focusing on the style of the movement.
Process Standard: Performing/Presenting/Producing
Anchor Standard: Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.
d. Making Artwork
i. Tell students that this movement is the finale for the Louve
documentary and does not have artwork associated with it. Now
hearing the piece we will make our own art that resembles the
movement. Think outside the box!
Process Standard: Connecting
Anchor Standard: Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.

ii. Put your instruments away quickly and talk to your group and get
the creative juices flowing. Students will have the rest of the class
period to work on their projects.
iii. Have students in pre-designed groups, have them up on the board
before the lesson.
iv. Let students work independently. Walk around the room helping
get ideas, let the the Dello Joio play in the background.
7. Closure: When there are 5 minutes left, let students know that they need to start
cleaning up and that they will have tomorrow to finish up their project.
Presentations will take place the following week.
