Reading strategies are what good

readers use naturally as they
read stories and texts.
There are six reading strategies:
Making Connections

Visualizing

When characters or events remind

you of things you've seen or
experienced in your life, you have a
better understanding of the story.
Readers make text-to-self
connections, text-to-text
connections, text-to-world
connections, and text-to-media
connections.

Visualizing is the movie you make in

your mind or the picture you see
when you read a story. Making
pictures in your mind of what the
author is writing about helps you
understand the story or the
information better.

Asking Questions

Predicting

When you ask questions while

reading, it helps you dig deeper into
the story. Some questions can be
answered in the text and are called
text-dependent questions. Other
questions make you think and
search, and you have to use your
own experiences to answer them.
You can't always answer these
questions directly from the text.

Making predictions helps you

understand the story because you
have to think ahead about what
might happen. When you make
predictions, it is important to read
on to see if your predictions are true
or not. This helps you become more
involved in the story.

Inferring

Synthesizing

Inferring is what you have to do

when the author doesn't come right
out and tell you something. You use
clues and details that the author
wrote and apply what you know
(your schema) to make a
conclusion. Inferring is also known as
reading between the lines.
Kristine Nannini

Synthesizing is when you create a

new understanding by applying
what you know (your schema) and
important details from the text.
Having a new idea or being
inspired to do something because
of a book is synthesizing. It's like
having an AHA! moment.
