Background of Study: Typhoid fever is one endemic disease of Indonesia caused

by Salmonella typhi bacteria. Date (Phoenix dactylifera) contains some chemical
substances such as flavonoid, saponin, alkaloid, and tannin as antimicrobial
substances.
Research Objective: To see the effectiveness of antimicrobial effect of date fruit
extract (Phoenix dactylifera) toward Salmonella typhi in in vitro way.
Research Method: This research uses a true experimental research design with
post-test only control group design. The method used is tube dilution test to see
the effect of antimicrobial effect of date fruit extract through various
concentration of Salmonella typhi bacteria which is determined for the Minimum
Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Killing Concentration (MKC). The
data analysis uses ANOVA, correlation and regression.

Result : MIC and MKC were found at concentration of 25%. The result of ANOVA
test shows that there is a significant difference in the two treatments
(p=0.000<0.05). the value of correlation test is -0.839 meaning that the increase of
date fruit extract concentration decreases the number of Salmonella typhi bacteria
colony. The addition of date fruit extract (Phoenix dactylifera) has a significant
impact toward the decrease of the number of Salmonella typhi bacteria colony in
amount of 70.3%.
Conclusion : Date fruit extract (Phoenix dactylifera) has antimicrobial effect toward
growth of Salmonella typhi colony.
Key terms : Date fruit extract (Phoenix dactylifera), Salmonella typhi Minimum
Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), Minimum Killing Concentration (MKC)
