Preface

This manual provides the administrator with the information concerning administrator functions of
the NIPSON MagneticPrinter which can be reached with the administrator password.
The manual is organized as follows:
-

Chapter 1 describes the administrator access and list the different administrator
functions.

Chapter 2 describes the administrator menus to get printer information.

Chapter 3 describes the administrator menus to modify initial printer configuration.

Chapter 4 describes the administrator menus to list, install, remove environment


objects used by the printer (papers, overlays, menus...).

Chapter 5 describes the administrator maintenance menus.

Chapter 6 is a programmers advertsement for building S.E.D. applications to be


printed on the printer.

Chapter 7 is a programmers advertsement for building duplex applications to be


printed on the S.E.D. or T.E.D. printer.

NOTE: In this manual, screen images may have some difference with your printer
screen image according to the printer configuration and the software revision.

VP200_DLX
In the administration menu, the functions under VP200_DLX refer to the T.E.D. duplex printer.
Certain functions of the T.E.D. printer, listed in the previous chapter can be accessed under Duplex,
others can be accessed under VP200_1 (or 2).

VP200_1 (or 2)
In the administration menu, the functions under VP200_1 refer to the first printer in the direction of
paper movement, and those of VP200_2 to the second printer.

Functions accessible for the T.E.D. printer


Supervisor information
VP200_DLX provides information on the recto-verso supervisor and VP200_1 (or 2) gives
information on the printer 1 (or 2) supervisor.
Mechanism information
Accessible with VP200_1 (or 2), provides information on the mechanism of the machine
concerned.
Acquisition
Configuration of the recto-verso printer connection is carried out under VP200_DLX.
Control panel
The function can be accessed from anywhere but modification only applies to the particular
machine selected.
Controller
"Controller" functions can be accessed under VP200_1 (or 2) and the modification only applies
to the machine selected.
Mechanism
Certain functions can be accessed under VP200_1 (or 2), others under VP200_DLX, and the

On pinless printer, allows to define the number of pages which will be printed before the job and
which contain only the marks of synchronization. These marks are used for synchronization of the

To guarantee the synchronization of the verso printer, it is necessary that this number of pages is at
least equal to the sheet height (in inches).
Example: for a 8.5 inches paper height one needs at least 9 pages, if not the printer may not be
synchronized.

The IPDS dotted patterns are patterns sent by the host system and reproduced over a complete surface. These patterns are sent as images. When the printer receives an image, it detects that it has
been presented with a dotted pattern and it can substitute the pattern sent by another.
The OGL software has the possibility of 2 kinds of grey areas: SCREEN and STANDARD.. This
function is apply on these 2 kinds, except for grey of density 3, 90, 93, and 96%. In these last cases,
any difference will be made.

This option has 4 values to allow various arrangements of the pages to adapt to different post-processings:
- 0 Cut sheet emulation off
- 1 Page right to left

All systems do not manage this option, when this option is enabled on the printer, the system generates a particular key to enable and perform the cut sheet emulation mode.
When the option is enabled, all the jobs will be printed in 2-up, except:

if several copies of pages are specified

Paper feed velocity


Function: This function is used to modify the maximum paper feed speed (key [Paper feed F5])
which is usually 20 m/min.
The maximum paper feed speed can be adjusted from 20 to 60 m/min. (in the case of a 60 m/min.
printer).
In all cases, paper feeding occurs at 20 m/min. for 10 seconds then, if the maximum paper feed
speed is higher, the feed speed is gradually accelerated up to the required speed.
NOTE: In case of T.E.D. printing, paper feed speed is always 20 m/min.

INTRODUCTION
This document is a programmers advertisement to build duplex jobs which will be printed on the
S.E.D. printer.
PRINCIPLE
The print page (normally recto) is printed on the left half of the printing station, the second page (normally verso) is printed on the right side, about 330 inches later, after having been reversed in the
footbridge.

The controller receives pages, the odd ones are considered as recto ones, the even ones being

7.3

SYNCHRONIZATION MARKS IN S.E.D.


This paragraph describes only the synchronization done with marks, for the synchronization done
with barcode, refer to the documentation of recto/verso control.

7.3.1.

Principle
Printing control marks on the recto side (front) and verso side (back).
These marks are detected (read) by 2 sensors installed on the extraction area of the verso printer
(slave printer): one sensor to read the marks on the recto page, the other sensor to read the marks
on the verso page.livr avecThese sensors, in an independent way, are adjusted in a paper feed
perpendicular direction.
They are physically installed on the front and the back of the printer extraction with a shift of 1 inch in
the paper feed direction.
The printing marks must be positioned on the paper in order that the 2 sensors trigger off
simultaneously.
A vertical shift equal to the mechanical shift of the 2 sensors (1 inch) must be kept between the recto
and verso marks for every marked sheet.
A recto/verso synchronization error will be detected if only one of the 2 sensor triggers off.
The vertical position of each mark must be different from a paper sheet to another one in order to
detect the loss or the duplication of a recto or a verso page (always with a vertical shift of 1 inch
between the recto mark and the verso mark of every marked sheet).
For this reason, the marks must be enough moved in a vertical marking window to avoid a overlap of
the sensors signals in case of loss or duplication of a recto or verso page (in practice, the minimum
value of the increment must be 1.5 inch).
The synchronization error is not checked for the first 72 inch of paper after the job starts. This is to
prevent from banner false detection.
NOTES: - This mechanism does not allow to detect a complete paper sheet loss. The goal is to
detect a de-synchronization of the recto page related to the verso page caused by the loss
or the duplication of a recto page or a verso page.
- There is no vertical area window defined for the control marks reading. So a vertical
band (parallel to the paper feed) without any printing is required to place the control
marks.
There are 2 control levels:

Total control ( from the server to the printer)


In this case, the control marks are generated by the application.
On the printer, the only operation to perform is to enable the control marks and place
horizontally the recto and verso sensors related to the marks position on the paper.

Partial control ( printer only)


No printing marks generated by the application. The control marks will be generated by the
printer controller. The parameters concerning the printing and the control of the marks are
defined by the user with the printer display.
In this case, only the components coming after the printing mark process are controlled:

the bitmaps extraction
the printer mechanism

automatically re-calculated each time there is a modification. These values are displayed

7.3.2.2.Mark dimensions
Mark height:
Maxi: 0.5 inch (2300 dots in 600 dpi ; 150 dots in 300 dpi)
Mini: 0.167 inch (100 dots in 600 dpi ; 50 dots in 300 dpi)
Mark width:
Maxi: 0.333 inch (200 dots in 600 dpi ; 100 dots in 300 dpi)
Mini: 0.125 inch (75 dots in 600 dpi ; 38 dots in 300 dpi)
NOTE:

The values which are displayed are depending of the chosen unit.
In the screen 'Units', there is no specific choice for the height and the width of the mark. It
is the unit chosen for the height and the width of the paper which is applied for the height
and the width of the mark.

7.3.2.3.Recto et Verso horizontal position

The recto and verso printers may be configured with different "Horizontal position" values (in the
paper feed perpendicular orientation, the 2 sensors may be adjusted independently one of the
other)
In duplex mode, in the perpendicular paper feed direction, the origin point of the printing is the "0
paper" point.
The logical page and the mark are anchored related to this point.
In another hand, the horizontal adjustment (defined in the F7 adjustment screen) has an effect only
for the logical page. The mark position is not modified by the horizontal adjustment.
Independently of the horizontal adjustment, the mark keeps the position defined by the parameter
'Recto horizontal position' of the recto printer and by the parameter 'Verso horizontal position' of the
verso printer. It is possible to adjust the horizontal position of the printing without having to modify
the position of the recto verso marks sensors.
A negative value (minimum (-1) inch) allows to move the mark in the tractors holes. (A minimum of (1/2) inch is enough).
This possibility is interesting only if the write heads are located in front of this area, it means in the
case where the width sheet is less or equal to 18 inches.
There is no particular trap if the write heads cover the whole width of the paper (including the tractors holes). Whatever the size and the location of the marks and the logical page, there are heads in
front of.
On the other hand, as soon as the sheet width is greater than the heads width, it is mandatory to
place the mark inside the area covered by the heads.
Of course it is not possible to place the mark beyond the 18th write head (the maximum value for the
"Horizontal position" is equal to (18 inches - mark width)), but it is possible to place the mark before
the first head (minimum value for the "Horizontal position" = (-1) inch related to the 0 paper).

The width of the lost data is equal to (left edge position - 1/2 inch)
NOTE:

the parameter "Left Side Position" appears in the operator panel in the screen "Measure".
Usually, on a 600 dpi printer, with 520 mm paper width, the value of this parameter is
around -600 dots.

On a 600 dpi printer, in the above example, (600 dots - 1/2 inch) = 300 dots of data (in the
left) and the mark are lost.

To see these 300 first dots, the horizontal adjustment must be moved at -300 dots.

On the other hand, as the position of the mark does not move with the horizontal adjustment, the
mark stays anchored to the 0 origin paper point.

Minimum value for the parameters "Horizontal Position":

NOTE:

the parameter Left Side Position" is visible in the operator panel in the screen "Measure":
- Parameter F8
- Measure F9
If this rule is not followed-up, the mark will not be visible and the data may be lost in the
right of the printing.

NOTE:

The following formula gives the width of the data lost in the right area of the printing:
[(|Left Edge Position|) - (1/2 inch) - (Horizontal position of the mark)] - (18 inches - Initial
Logical Page Width)

Remark: When it is not possible to devote a full column of the A4 print area to marks, it is possible
to print the marks at the edge of the caroll margin.
It is even possible to print the marks at the external edge of the paper, with a risk of toner
pollution due to the tractors edge and a risk of poor print quality of the mark, leading to
false detection, due to paper irregularities at the pin holes that prevent a correct transfer of
the toner.

It is not advised to print the marks between the holes because in this case, there is a risk
of false detection due to irregularities in the holes edges.
In the case of having one (or both) mark located in the sprocket holes area, it is necessary
to have the other in the neighborhood.

7.3.2.4.Vertical Position
Minimum Vertical Position:
Maximum: Maximum vertical position - 1 inch
Minimum: 0.5 inch
Maximum Vertical Position:
Maximum: Sheet Height - 0.5 inch - Mark Height
Minimum: Minimum Vertical Position + 1 inch
The result of the operation [(Maximum Vertical Position) - (Minimum Vertical Position)] defines the
vertical windows for the mark.
The Maximum and Minimum Vertical Positions are the same for the 2 printers recto and verso. But
in fact, the 2 marks recto and verso are 1 inch vertically shifted in order to take into account the vertical mechanical shift of 1 inch between the 2 sensors recto and verso (the mark of the verso printer
is coming 1 inch late related to the paper path compared to the recto printer)..

The first mark is printed at the "Minimum Vertical Position" on the recto printer, and printed at the
"Minimum Vertical Position" + 1 inch on the verso printer. Then, these values are increased of 1.5
inch for each new marked sheet, as long as the "Maximum Vertical Position" is not reached or
exceeded on the verso printer (it's the verso printer which will reach first the Maximum Vertical Position). As soon as this is the case, there is again a loop on the initial positions.
In the vertical direction (paper path direction), the position of the mark is influenced by the printing
adjustment values (the mark is included in the bitmap, and the vertical adjustment is done by the
extraction hardware).
If the verso and the recto sides are shifted by using the "vertical adjustment", the shift value of 1 inch
between the recto side and the verso marks may increase or decrease.
The recto/verso mechanism will be operational only if the verso signal arrives during the verso signal.
The triggering order is not important (recto sensor first or verso first), but the second signal must be
generated before the first one disappears.
The "AND" of the 2 signals is realized by the hardware (SYPAL board). It is theoretically enough if
the verso signal arrives one dot before end of recto signal (around 50 microseconds per dot at 60m/
min.). But the mechanical tolerance related to the position of the 2 sensors must be taken into
account.
The vertical gap between the recto side and the verso side must be lower than the mark height to
respect to the above condition. Otherwise, there will be a wrong synchronization error detection.

Warning
-

The vertical adjustment may be done at + or - 250 dots at 600 dpi (+ or - 125 dots at 300 dpi)
on each recto and verso side. As a result we may have a gap of 500 dots between the recto
side and the verso side.

The height of the mark may be adjusted between 100 and 300 dots at 600 dpi (between 50 and
150 dots at 300 dpi).
The minimum height of the mark being less than the maximum recto verso relative shift, a
systematic recto/verso detection synchronization error may occur.

NOTE:

In practice, this problem does not occur, because the vertical adjustment must be used to
correct the adjustment errors of the paper on the both recto and verso printers, and not to
correct a vertical position error of the application. The adjustment of the recto/verso
position using the vertical adjustment is normally small.

Example 1:
recto/verso relative adjustment = 0

The shift of 1 inch between the 2 marks is compensated by the mechanical shift between the 2
sensors. So, the 2 signals are generated at the same time.
Note: In practice, the mechanical tolerance of the sensors position may caused a very small
shift.

Verso Adjustment = - 150 dots
Mark Height = 0.5 inch

inverted. Here, it is the recto sensor which is activated first.
The mechanical tolerance of the sensors position may be the cause of a small overlap of the
signals (or on the contrary a gap between the 2 signals).

around1.5 ms at 60 m/min.

7.3.2.5.Algorithm
Allows to define the sheets marking algorithm: marks printed every 2 sheets,
marks printed every 3 sheets,
... etc...
Possible choices: 1/1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/5, 1/7, 1/11, 1/13, 1/17, 1/19 and WITHOUT
The value WITHOUT" allows to disable of the marks.

7.3.2.6.Control
Possible choices: With Control or Without Control
NOTE:

7.3.3.

The enabling of the marking and the control are independent to allow the mechanical
sensors adjustment during the printing of the first sheets of the job without being disturbed
by 'synchro default' incidents. When the adjustment is done, stop the printer (F3), enable
the control (F8 / F7 [2] / F7 / Control: With Control) and start (F2).

Total control (server + printer chain)


Here, the marks are generated in the application. So, on the printer, the marking must be disabled
(Algorithm = WITHOUT).
The mark is included in the data of the page, so this mark has the same printing rules than the data;
particularly, the horizontal position will move with the printer adjustment (F7).
-> a horizontal adjustment involves to re-adjust mechanically the sensors position.
In the other hand, if we refer to the chapter 7.3.2.3. (Example with paper width of 520 mm), the
horizontal adjustment done to position the printing in front of the heads is not followed by a data loss
in the right area (the mark moving with the data does not increase the page width beyond 18
inches).
Except this point, all the whole explanation described in the chapter 7.3.2. concerning the mark
characteristics and the positioning may be applied.
