S.E.D. jobs
6.1
INTRODUCTION
This document is a programmers advertisement to build duplex jobs which will be printed on the
S.E.D. printer.
PRINCIPLE
The print page (normally recto) is printed on the left half of the printing station, the second page (normally verso) is printed on the right side, about 330 inches later, after having been reversed in the
footbridge.
6.2
210 mm

12.7 mm
12.7 mm
With the print on pin feed option to YES in the Parameters -> Others window, printing in the
12.7 mm caroll margin is allowed.
Anyway, a negative value of left margin in the PRINT ADJUST window for the recto printing,
and a positive value for the left margin for the verso printing could lead to a loss of data (there
is no print head beyond zero, nor after 18.45").

Printing on white paper of 241 mm without margin alignment will lead to a truncature of about
2.5 mm, for an application 210 mm wide with an anchorage point of zero. The margin
alignment shall be about 60 dots in this case, or the application designed to print with an offset
of 2.5 mm from zero.

Horizontal alignment in the page shall be a positive value (otherwise, a truncation beyond the
write heads will be encountered).
This has to be taken into account in the designing preprinted forms: if the form can be layed on
the web with an accuracy of + 2 mm, its width shall be restricted to 210 - 4 mm = 206 mm.

If there is no limitation due to pre/post processing and if it is allowed to print in the first 2 mm of
the right caroll margin of the recto side, it is possible to design the form with 208 mm width, this
will allow to have 2 mm negative alignment or 2 mm positive alignment in the caroll area.

The track length shall be adjusted to a multiple of the page length leading to an entire number
of half inches, because of the top of page alignment and the caroll sprocket pitch of 1/2 inch.

Page sorting
The controller receives pages, the odd ones are considered as recto ones, the even ones being
considered as verso ones.
The parity of the page number shall be guaranteed by the application program, the controller
making no 2's complement of the page number.
Pages sorting is tied to 2 parameters:
Reversing
Folding mode
These 2 parameters are related to the post processing device and shall be configured at the
installation time.
Reversing is a function of:
Reversing before stacking with cutted sheets
First fold direction with a folder.
Folder mode is a function of the paper cutting before stacking (cutted sheets) or after stacking

7.3
7.3.1.
Principle
Printing control marks on the recto side (front) and verso side (back).
These marks are detected (read) by 2 sensors installed on the extraction area of the verso printer
(slave printer): one sensor to read the marks on the recto page, the other sensor to read the marks
on the verso page.livr avecThese sensors, in an independent way, are adjusted in a paper feed
perpendicular direction.
They are physically installed on the front and the back of the printer extraction with a shift of 1 inch in
the paper feed direction.
The printing marks must be positioned on the paper in order that the 2 sensors trigger off
simultaneously.
A vertical shift equal to the mechanical shift of the 2 sensors (1 inch) must be kept between the recto
and verso marks for every marked sheet.
A recto/verso synchronization error will be detected if only one of the 2 sensor triggers off.
The vertical position of each mark must be different from a paper sheet to another one in order to
detect the loss or the duplication of a recto or a verso page (always with a vertical shift of 1 inch
between the recto mark and the verso mark of every marked sheet).
For this reason, the marks must be enough moved in a vertical marking window to avoid a overlap of
the sensors signals in case of loss or duplication of a recto or verso page (in practice, the minimum
value of the increment must be 1.5 inch).
The synchronization error is not checked for the first 72 inch of paper after the job starts. This is to
prevent from banner false detection.
NOTES: - This mechanism does not allow to detect a complete paper sheet loss. The goal is to
detect a de-synchronization of the recto page related to the verso page caused by the loss
or the duplication of a recto page or a verso page.
- There is no vertical area window defined for the control marks reading. So a vertical
band (parallel to the paper feed) without any printing is required to place the control
marks.
There are 2 control levels:

7.3.2.2.Mark dimensions
Mark height:
Maxi: 0.5 inch (2300 dots in 600 dpi ; 150 dots in 300 dpi)
Mini: 0.167 inch (100 dots in 600 dpi ; 50 dots in 300 dpi)
Mark width:
Maxi: 0.333 inch (200 dots in 600 dpi ; 100 dots in 300 dpi)
Mini: 0.125 inch (75 dots in 600 dpi ; 38 dots in 300 dpi)
NOTE:
The values which are displayed are depending of the chosen unit.
In the screen 'Units', there is no specific choice for the height and the width of the mark. It
is the unit chosen for the height and the width of the paper which is applied for the height
and the width of the mark.
The recto and verso printers may be configured with different "Horizontal position" values (in the
paper feed perpendicular orientation, the 2 sensors may be adjusted independently one of the
other)
In duplex mode, in the perpendicular paper feed direction, the origin point of the printing is the "0
paper" point.
The logical page and the mark are anchored related to this point.
In another hand, the horizontal adjustment (defined in the F7 adjustment screen) has an effect only
for the logical page. The mark position is not modified by the horizontal adjustment.
Independently of the horizontal adjustment, the mark keeps the position defined by the parameter
'Recto horizontal position' of the recto printer and by the parameter 'Verso horizontal position' of the
verso printer. It is possible to adjust the horizontal position of the printing without having to modify
the position of the recto verso marks sensors.
A negative value (minimum (-1) inch) allows to move the mark in the tractors holes. (A minimum of (1/2) inch is enough).
This possibility is interesting only if the write heads are located in front of this area, it means in the
case where the width sheet is less or equal to 18 inches.
There is no particular trap if the write heads cover the whole width of the paper (including the tractors holes). Whatever the size and the location of the marks and the logical page, there are heads in
front of.
On the other hand, as soon as the sheet width is greater than the heads width, it is mandatory to
place the mark inside the area covered by the heads.
Of course it is not possible to place the mark beyond the 18th write head (the maximum value for the
"Horizontal position" is equal to (18 inches - mark width)), but it is possible to place the mark before
the first head (minimum value for the "Horizontal position" = (-1) inch related to the 0 paper).

The width of the lost data is equal to (left edge position - 1/2 inch)
NOTE:
the parameter "Left Side Position" appears in the operator panel in the screen "Measure".
Usually, on a 600 dpi printer, with 520 mm paper width, the value of this parameter is
around -600 dots.
On a 600 dpi printer, in the above example, (600 dots - 1/2 inch) = 300 dots of data (in the
left) and the mark are lost.
To see these 300 first dots, the horizontal adjustment must be moved at -300 dots.
On the other hand, as the position of the mark does not move with the horizontal adjustment, the
mark stays anchored to the 0 origin paper point.

Recto Horizontal Position" = |Left edge position Recto printer| - 1/2 inch
Verso Horizontal Position" = |Left edge position Verso printer| - 1/2 inch
NOTE:
the parameter Left Side Position" is visible in the operator panel in the screen "Measure":
- Parameter F8
- Measure F9
If this rule is not followed-up, the mark will not be visible and the data may be lost in the
right of the printing.
NOTE:
The following formula gives the width of the data lost in the right area of the printing:
[(|Left Edge Position|) - (1/2 inch) - (Horizontal position of the mark)] - (18 inches - Initial
Logical Page Width)
Remark: When it is not possible to devote a full column of the A4 print area to marks, it is possible
to print the marks at the edge of the caroll margin.
It is even possible to print the marks at the external edge of the paper, with a risk of toner
pollution due to the tractors edge and a risk of poor print quality of the mark, leading to
false detection, due to paper irregularities at the pin holes that prevent a correct transfer of
the toner.
paper
pin holes
It is not advised to print the marks between the holes because in this case, there is a risk
of false detection due to irregularities in the holes edges.
In the case of having one (or both) mark located in the sprocket holes area, it is necessary
to have the other in the neighborhood.

7.3.2.4.Vertical Position
Minimum Vertical Position:
Maximum: Maximum vertical position - 1 inch
Minimum: 0.5 inch
Maximum Vertical Position:
Maximum: Sheet Height - 0.5 inch - Mark Height
Minimum: Minimum Vertical Position + 1 inch
The result of the operation [(Maximum Vertical Position) - (Minimum Vertical Position)] defines the
vertical windows for the mark.
The Maximum and Minimum Vertical Positions are the same for the 2 printers recto and verso. But
in fact, the 2 marks recto and verso are 1 inch vertically shifted in order to take into account the vertical mechanical shift of 1 inch between the 2 sensors recto and verso (the mark of the verso printer
is coming 1 inch late related to the paper path compared to the recto printer)..
Verso sensor
1 inch
Paper feed
Verso side
Recto side
Recto sensor
The first mark is printed at the "Minimum Vertical Position" on the recto printer, and printed at the
"Minimum Vertical Position" + 1 inch on the verso printer. Then, these values are increased of 1.5
inch for each new marked sheet, as long as the "Maximum Vertical Position" is not reached or
exceeded on the verso printer (it's the verso printer which will reach first the Maximum Vertical Position). As soon as this is the case, there is again a loop on the initial positions.
In the vertical direction (paper path direction), the position of the mark is influenced by the printing
adjustment values (the mark is included in the bitmap, and the vertical adjustment is done by the
extraction hardware).
If the verso and the recto sides are shifted by using the "vertical adjustment", the shift value of 1 inch
between the recto side and the verso marks may increase or decrease.
The recto/verso mechanism will be operational only if the verso signal arrives during the verso signal.
The triggering order is not important (recto sensor first or verso first), but the second signal must be
generated before the first one disappears.
The "AND" of the 2 signals is realized by the hardware (SYPAL board). It is theoretically enough if
the verso signal arrives one dot before end of recto signal (around 50 microseconds per dot at 60m/
min.). But the mechanical tolerance related to the position of the 2 sensors must be taken into
account.
The vertical gap between the recto side and the verso side must be lower than the mark height to
respect to the above condition. Otherwise, there will be a wrong synchronization error detection.
7-9
Administrator guide
VARYPRESS 200
Warning
-
The vertical adjustment may be done at + or - 250 dots at 600 dpi (+ or - 125 dots at 300 dpi)
on each recto and verso side. As a result we may have a gap of 500 dots between the recto
side and the verso side.
The height of the mark may be adjusted between 100 and 300 dots at 600 dpi (between 50 and
150 dots at 300 dpi).
The minimum height of the mark being less than the maximum recto verso relative shift, a
systematic recto/verso detection synchronization error may occur.
NOTE:
In practice, this problem does not occur, because the vertical adjustment must be used to
correct the adjustment errors of the paper on the both recto and verso printers, and not to
correct a vertical position error of the application. The adjustment of the recto/verso
position using the vertical adjustment is normally small.
Example 1:
recto/verso relative adjustment = 0
Recto sensor
Verso sensor
The shift of 1 inch between the 2 marks is compensated by the mechanical shift between the 2
sensors. So, the 2 signals are generated at the same time.
Note: In practice, the mechanical tolerance of the sensors position may caused a very small
shift.
-> Condition for a good functioning
Example 2:
Recto Adjustment = + 150 dots
Verso Adjustment = - 150 dots
Mark Height = 0.5 inch
Verso sensor
Recto sensor
The verso sensor is activated first.
The mechanical tolerance of the sensors position may be the cause of a small overlap of the
signals (or on the contrary a gap between the 2 signals).

inverted. Here, it is the recto sensor which is activated first.
The mechanical tolerance of the sensors position may be the cause of a small overlap of the
