The Southwest Detroit Business

Association (SDBA) in partnership
with the Mexicantown Community
Development Corporation (MCDC)
has started the reactivation of the
Mexicantown Hubbard Communities
Main Street Program, which is funded
by two LISC Building Sustainable
Communities Early Action Grants.
The initiative is engaging local businesses, residents and community stakeholders in order to implement a comprehensive, commercial district economic
development program. The vision of the
MHC Main Street Program is to provide
customers and visitors with an inviting,
exciting and satisfying shopping, dining
and cultural experience.

Mexicantown is the authentic heart

of the Mexican culture in southeast
Michigan, said SDBA President Kathy
Wendler. We are thrilled that this
meaningful program will help reinvigorate the local business community and
serve as a platform to reintroduce the
wonderful events and activities that
showcase this amazing community.
Importantly, the program also will help
us welcome the many new businesses
moving into the Mexicantown area.
The group is working on the creation
of a printed and digital marketing brochure with a detailed map and listing
of all businesses, nonprofit organizations and cultural annual events taking place in the Mexicantown Hubbard

Celebrate Day of the Dead 2016

(Da de los Muertos) in Southwest Detroit
Southwest Detroit
is actively preparing for its annual
Da de los Muertos
Celebration. The
focus of the holiday
is to gather together
family and friends to
remember and pray
for those who have

passed away. The celebration occurs in the

first days of November
of each year, and
coincides with the
Catholic Holidays of
All Saints Day and All
Souls Day. Traditions
include building private altars (ofrendas)

honoring the deceased,

using sugar skulls,
marigolds, and the
favorite foods and beverages of the departed,
and visiting the graves
of the loved ones with
these as gifts.

The 2016 Day of

the Dead Celebration
will be held primarily
on Tuesday, November
1st and Wednesday,
November 2nd.
However, the wide district celebration will

start by mid-October.
The Celebration promises to be a huge success as it will offer
Community Ofrendas,
a Community Altar
and Procession at

una variedad de restaurantes y de
lugares para hacer compras y en donde
se llevan a cabo actividades culturales
inolvidables.
Mexicantown es el autntico
corazn de la cultura mexicana en el
sureste de Michigan, dijo la presidenta
de SDBA Kathy Wendler. Estamos
encantados de que este programa
significativo ayudar a revitalizar la
comunidad empresarial local y servir
como plataforma para reintroducir los
maravillosos eventos y actividades que
muestran a esta comunidad increble.

Cancer Society attributes this to higher
rates of alcohol and

On Thursday, September 22, 2016, at El Rancho

Restaurant, 5900 W. Vernor, at 8:30 a.m., the W.
Vernor and Springwells Business Improvement
District(BID) holds its annual meeting, as required
by state legislation. All property owners within the
boundaries of that district will have been invited
to attend that meeting, at which time the organization addresses the business matters of the BID.
Business improvement districts are created by a
vote of the property owners in a specific geography
for the purpose of strengthening the vibrancy and
value of the area. Only property owners may vote
once the district is created.
Throughout the year, the BID board meets
monthly to conduct the business of the organization, whose purpose is to support local property
owners and businesses through the creation and
maintenance of a business district that is clean,
safe and attractive to customers both within and
from outside the neighborhood in which it is located. In the Vernor Springwells BID, the board, with
the support of the membership, installed and maintains over 80 trash containers, broom and dustpan
sweeping of the sidewalk and curb areas of the disContinued on page 14

I-75 Closing Should Benefit

The Michigan
Department of
Transportation (MDOT)
will close a stretch of
southbound I-75, from
Springwells Street to
Clark Avenue, early
next year to start work
on multi-year, multimillion dollar infrastructure improvement
project. The project
includes:
* Repairing I-75
pavement from
Springwells Street to
Clark Avenue.
* Replacing the
Rouge River Bridge
deck on I-75 (the largest bridge in Michigan)
and the I-75 bridge
over Fort Street.
* Removing the
obsolete I-75 bridge
over Goddard Road and
constructing two small-

er bridges.
* Repairing 13 small
bridges along the I-75
route.
* Adding an intelligent transportation
system (ITS).
* Repairing I-75
pavement from
Goddard Road to the
Rouge River.
MDOT expects the
project to be completed
in 2018 and will detour
southbound I-75 traffic
for the duration of the
project. Commercial
trucking and commuters will be advised to
take I-96 west to I-275,
then follow I-275 south
to I-75. Alternatively,
local traffic will be able
to take I-75 southbound
up to Springwells
Street and will then be
re-routed to W. Fort

St., among others.

Northbound I-75 traffic
will not be affected by
the project.
For local businesses, the prospect of
increased through-traffic on the surface roads
in Southwest Detroit
(Springwells, Livernois,
Clark, Vernor, Fort,
etc.) presents an opportunity to reach new
audiences and cultivate
an expanded customer
base. Those who get
creative with marketing and advertising, for
example by promoting
their shop, restaurant,
or service to passers-by
with special offers and
incentives, are likely to
benefit.

Streets Detroit), presentadas por la Fundacin
de Energa de DTE, es parte de un movimiento
global para recuperar el espacio pblico para
las personas mediante la transformacin temporal de las calles pavimentadas en parques
y espacios pblicos. Un evento gratuito y abierto al pblico y a participantes de todas las
edades, Las Calles Abiertas de Detroit cerrar temporalmente casi cuatro millas de la
Avenida Michigan y la W. Vernor Hwy. para
crear un espacio para actividades saludables,
la edificacin de la comunidad, y la conexin
a las empresas locales a partir de las 12 del
medioda a las 5 p.m. el domingo 25 de septiembre y el domingo 2 de octubre de 2016.

apoyo de los miembros, instala y mantiene ms de 80 contenedores de basura,
barre y recoge la basura de las aceras y de los bordes entre las banquetas y las
calles del distrito, as como ofrece empleo secundario a los oficiales de polica de
Detroit, quienes caminan y patrullan vistiendo los uniformes del Departamento
de Polica de Detroit (DPD, por sus siglas en ingls), a lo largo de la Vernor,
desde Woodmere hasta la Clark, y en la Springwells de la Vernor a la autopista I-75.
Aunque la nueva iluminacin en la W. Vernor es un producto de la recaudacin de fondos y el trabajo de la Asociacin de Negocios del Suroeste de
Detroit, es la dedicacin de los dueos de propiedades para establecer el BID
que cre la voluntad poltica para iniciar y para que se llevara a cabo el proyecto. Aplaudimos a nuestros propietarios de negocios locales por los bienes y servicios que proporcionan, los puestos de trabajo que han creado y por su visin
