Programme for Mid-Ability Students

Eng Dept 2011 Semester 2

You are advised to write between 250 and 350 words for this section.
You should read the information carefully and plan your answer before writing.
Your school has been given a $30,000 grant by the Ministry of Education in view of the
record of good results it has been producing over the last 5 years. Over the morning
assembly, your principal invited students to submit proposals on how the money should
be spent. He suggested two ideas for the students to consider:
1. Renovation of the canteen:
addition of two more stalls to add to the current variety of food available
comfortable round-tables and chairs instead of benches and long tables
piped-in music
implementation of the cash-card system to eliminate long queues
televisions at strategic corners
2. Renovation of the library:
addition of new books and magazines
installation of art gallery
small caf and bistro for students and teachers
multimedia area for students to watch movies and listen to music
terminals for easy self-borrowing and returning of books
As the class chairperson, you have been nominated by your class to propose the choice
that they have decided would be the best idea to spend the grant on.
Write a letter in which you explain to the principal which area your class would like to see
the grant being used on. Give reasons for your choice and convince the principal that
your choice is the best decision for the good of the school population.
Set your letter out correctly in clear, accurate English, and use a persuasive tone.
