ROSARY MYSTERY SHEET

ON MONDAY AND SATURDAY, MEDITATE ON THE JOYFUL MYSTERIES

First Decade (Steps 9-22): The Annunciation of Gabriel to Mary (Luke 1:26-38)
26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a
virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgins name was Mary. 28
And he came to her and said, Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.[a] 29 But she was much
perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30 The angel said to her, Do
not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And now, you will conceive in your womb
and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most
High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 He will reign over the house
of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. 34 Mary said to the angel, How can this be,
since I am a virgin?[b] 35 The angel said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of
the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born[c] will be holy; he will be called Son
of God. 36 And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth
month for her who was said to be barren. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God. 38 Then Mary
said, Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word. Then the angel
departed from her.
Second Decade (Steps 23-36): The Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth (Luke 1:39-56)
39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, 40 and she
entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of
Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit 42 and she exclaimed
with a loud cry, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And why is
this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, when the voice of your
greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that
there would be[a] a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord. 46 And Mary said,
Marys Song of Praise
My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden.
For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;
49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is on those who fear him
from generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with his arm,
he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts,
52 he has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalted those of low degree;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent empty away.

54 He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
55 as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his posterity for ever.[b]
56 And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her home.

Third Decade (Steps 37-50): The Birth of Our Lord (Luke 2:1-21)
2 In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This
was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 All went to their own
towns to be registered. 4 Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of
David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. 5 He went to
be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. 6 While they were
there, the time came for her to deliver her child. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped
him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
8 In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 Then
an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were
terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for seeI am bringing you good news of great
joy for all the people: 11 to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah,[a] the
Lord. 12 This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host,[b] praising God and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors![c]
15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us go
now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us. 16 So
they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. 17 When they saw
this, they made known what had been told them about this child; 18 and all who heard it were amazed
at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her
heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had
been told them.
21 After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name
given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
Fourth Decade (Steps 51-64): The Presentation of Our Lord (Luke 2:22-38)
22 When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to
Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every firstborn male
shall be designated as holy to the Lord), 24 and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in
the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.

ROSARY MYSTERY SHEET

25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon;[a] this man was righteous and devout,
looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26 It had been revealed
to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lords Messiah.[b] 27
Guided by the Spirit, Simeon[c] came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus,
to do for him what was customary under the law, 28 Simeon[d] took him in his arms and praised God,
saying,
29 Master, now you are dismissing your servant[e] in peace, according to your word;
30 for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.
33 And the childs father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34 Then Simeon[f]
blessed them and said to his mother Mary, This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in
Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35 so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealedand
a sword will pierce your own soul too.
36 There was also a prophet, Anna[g] the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great
age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 then as a widow to the age of
eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 At
that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child[h] to all who were looking
for the redemption of Jerusalem.
Fifth Decade (Steps 65-78): The Finding of Our Lord in the Temple (Luke 2:41-52)
41 Now every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. 42 And when he was
twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. 43 When the festival was ended and they started
to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. 44 Assuming that he
was in the group of travelers, they went a days journey. Then they started to look for him among their
relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. 46
After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking
them questions. 47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 When
his parents[a] saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, Child, why have you treated
us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety. 49 He said to them,
Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Fathers house?[b] 50 But
they did not understand what he said to them. 51 Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth,
and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years,[c] and in divine and human favor.

ON THURSDAY, MEDITATE ON THE LUMINOUS MYSTERIES

First Decade: The Baptism of Our Lord in the River Jordan (Matthew 3:13-16)

ROSARY MYSTERY SHEET

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have
prevented him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? 15 But Jesus answered
him, Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness. Then he consented.
16 And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were
opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.
Second Decade: The Wedding at Cana, when Christ manifested Himself (Jn 2:1-11)
2 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus
and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus
said to him, They have no wine. 4 And Jesus said to her, Woman, what concern is that to you and to
me? My hour has not yet come. 5 His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. 6 Now
standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty
gallons. 7 Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8 He said to
them, Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward. So they took it. 9 When the steward
tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants
who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, Everyone
serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have
kept the good wine until now. 11 Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his
glory; and his disciples believed in him.
Third Decade: The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God (Mark 1:14-15)
14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news[a] of God,[b] 15 and
saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near;[c] repent, and believe in the good
news.[d]
Fourth Decade: The Transfiguration of Our Lord (Matthew 17:1-8)
17 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high
mountain, by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and
his clothes became dazzling white. 3 Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with
him. 4 Then Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I[a] will make three
dwellings[b] here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. 5 While he was still speaking,
suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, This is my Son, the
Beloved;[c] with him I am well pleased; listen to him! 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell to the
ground and were overcome by fear. 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, Get up and do not be
afraid. 8 And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone.
Fifth Decade: The Last Supper, when Our Lord gave us the Holy Eucharist (Mt 26)
When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, 2 You know that after two days
the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.

ROSARY MYSTERY SHEET

3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, who was
called Caiaphas, 4 and they conspired to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. 5 But they said, Not during
the festival, or there may be a riot among the people.
6 Now while Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,[a] 7 a woman came to him with an
alabaster jar of very costly ointment, and she poured it on his head as he sat at the table. 8 But when
the disciples saw it, they were angry and said, Why this waste? 9 For this ointment could have been
sold for a large sum, and the money given to the poor. 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, Why
do you trouble the woman? She has performed a good service for me. 11 For you always have the poor
with you, but you will not always have me. 12 By pouring this ointment on my body she has prepared
me for burial. 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this good news[b] is proclaimed in the whole world, what she
has done will be told in remembrance of her.
14 Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, What
will you give me if I betray him to you? They paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment
he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.
17 On the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Where do you want us to
make the preparations for you to eat the Passover? 18 He said, Go into the city to a certain man, and
say to him, The Teacher says, My time is near; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.
19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover meal.
20 When it was evening, he took his place with the twelve;[c] 21 and while they were eating, he said,
Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me. 22 And they became greatly distressed and began to say to
him one after another, Surely not I, Lord? 23 He answered, The one who has dipped his hand into the
bowl with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by
whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born. 25
Judas, who betrayed him, said, Surely not I, Rabbi? He replied, You have said so.
26 While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to the
disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 27 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it
to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is my blood of the[d] covenant, which is poured out
for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will never again drink of this fruit of the vine until that
day when I drink it new with you in my Fathers kingdom.
30 When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
31 Then Jesus said to them, You will all become deserters because of me this night; for it is written,
I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.
32 But after I am raised up, I will go ahead of you to Galilee. 33 Peter said to him, Though all become
deserters because of you, I will never desert you. 34 Jesus said to him, Truly I tell you, this very night,
before the cock crows, you will deny me three times. 35 Peter said to him, Even though I must die with
you, I will not deny you. And so said all the disciples.

ROSARY MYSTERY SHEET

36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, Sit here while
I go over there and pray. 37 He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be
grieved and agitated. 38 Then he said to them, I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and
stay awake with me. 39 And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed, My
Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want. 40 Then he
came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, So, could you not stay awake with
me one hour? 41 Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial;[e] the spirit indeed
is willing, but the flesh is weak. 42 Again he went away for the second time and prayed, My Father, if
this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done. 43 Again he came and found them sleeping, for
their eyes were heavy. 44 So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the
same words. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, Are you still sleeping and taking your
rest? See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up, let us
be going. See, my betrayer is at hand.
47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived; with him was a large crowd with
swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had given
them a sign, saying, The one I will kiss is the man; arrest him. 49 At once he came up to Jesus and said,
Greetings, Rabbi! and kissed him. 50 Jesus said to him, Friend, do what you are here to do. Then
they came and laid hands on Jesus and arrested him. 51 Suddenly, one of those with Jesus put his hand
on his sword, drew it, and struck the slave of the high priest, cutting off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to
him, Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Do you
think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of
angels? 54 But how then would the scriptures be fulfilled, which say it must happen in this way? 55 At
that hour Jesus said to the crowds, Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I
were a bandit? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not arrest me. 56 But all this has
taken place, so that the scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled. Then all the disciples deserted him
and fled.
57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, in whose house the scribes and
the elders had gathered. 58 But Peter was following him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high
priest; and going inside, he sat with the guards in order to see how this would end. 59 Now the chief
priests and the whole council were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they might put him
to death, 60 but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward
61 and said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days. 62
The high priest stood up and said, Have you no answer? What is it that they testify against you? 63 But
Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him, I put you under oath before the living God, tell us if
you are the Messiah,[f] the Son of God. 64 Jesus said to him, You have said so. But I tell you,
From now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of
heaven.
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses?
You have now heard his blasphemy. 66 What is your verdict? They answered, He deserves death. 67

ROSARY MYSTERY SHEET

Then they spat in his face and struck him; and some slapped him, 68 saying, Prophesy to us, you
Messiah![g] Who is it that struck you?
69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant-girl came to him and said, You also were
with Jesus the Galilean. 70 But he denied it before all of them, saying, I do not know what you are
talking about. 71 When he went out to the porch, another servant-girl saw him, and she said to the
bystanders, This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.[h] 72 Again he denied it with an oath, I do not
know the man. 73 After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, Certainly you are also
one of them, for your accent betrays you. 74 Then he began to curse, and he swore an oath, I do not
know the man! At that moment the cock crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said:
Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times. And he went out and wept bitterly.

ROSARY MYSTERY SHEET

Second Decade: Our Lord is Scourged at the Pillar (Matthew 27:26)
26 So he released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified.
Third Decade: Our Lord is Crowned with Thorns (Matthew 27:27-31)
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governors headquarters,[a] and they gathered
the whole cohort around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and after twisting
some thorns into a crown, they put it on his head. They put a reed in his right hand and knelt before him
and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! 30 They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him
on the head. 31 After mocking him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then
they led him away to crucify him.
Fourth Decade: Our Lord Carries the Cross to Calvary (Matthew 27:32)
32 As they went out, they came upon a man from Cyrene named Simon; they compelled this man to
carry his cross.
Fifth Decade: The Crucifixion of Our Lord (Matthew 27:33-56)
33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), 34 they offered him
wine to drink, mixed with gall; but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. 35 And when they had
crucified him, they divided his clothes among themselves by casting lots;[a] 36 then they sat down there
and kept watch over him. 37 Over his head they put the charge against him, which read, This is Jesus,
the King of the Jews.
38 Then two bandits were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed
by derided[b] him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, You who would destroy the temple and build it in
three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross. 41 In the same way the
chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking him, saying, 42 He saved others; he
cannot save himself.[c] He is the King of Israel; let him come down from the cross now, and we will
believe in him. 43 He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he wants to; for he said, I am Gods
Son. 44 The bandits who were crucified with him also taunted him in the same way.
45 From noon on, darkness came over the whole land[d] until three in the afternoon. 46 And about
three oclock Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why
have you forsaken me? 47 When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, This man is calling for
Elijah. 48 At once one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave
it to him to drink. 49 But the others said, Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.[e] 50
Then Jesus cried again with a loud voice and breathed his last.[f] 51 At that moment the curtain of the
temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs
also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. 53 After his
resurrection they came out of the tombs and entered the holy city and appeared to many. 54 Now when
the centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what
took place, they were terrified and said, Truly this man was Gods Son![g]

55 Many women were also there, looking on from a distance; they had followed Jesus from Galilee and
had provided for him. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and
Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

ON WEDNESDAY AND SUNDAY, MEDITATE ON THE GLORIOUS MYSTERIES

First Decade: The Glorious Resurrection of Our Lord (John 20:1-29)
20 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw
that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other
disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and
we do not know where they have laid him. 3 Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward
the tomb. 4 The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb
first. 5 He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then
Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7 and
the cloth that had been on Jesus head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by
itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for
as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples
returned to their homes.
11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look[a] into the tomb; 12
and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and
the other at the feet. 13 They said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? She said to them, They
have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him. 14 When she had said this, she
turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her,
Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for? Supposing him to be the gardener, she
said to him, Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him
away. 16 Jesus said to her, Mary! She turned and said to him in Hebrew,[b] Rabbouni! (which
means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the
Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God
and your God. 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, I have seen the Lord; and
she told them that he had said these things to her.
19 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the
disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace
be with you. 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced
when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I
send you. 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. 23
If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.
24 But Thomas (who was called the Twin[c]), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25

the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not
believe.
26 A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors
were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. 27 Then he said to
Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not
doubt but believe. 28 Thomas answered him, My Lord and my God! 29 Jesus said to him, Have you
believed because you have seen
Second Decade: The Ascension of Our Lord (Luke 24:36-53)
36 While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, Peace be
with you.[a] 37 They were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a ghost. 38 He said
to them, Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Look at my hands and my
feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that
I have. 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.[b] 41 While in their joy
they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to them, Have you anything here to eat? 42 They
gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate in their presence.
44 Then he said to them, These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with youthat
everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled. 45
Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46 and he said to them, Thus it is written,
that the Messiah[c] is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and that repentance and
forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are
witnesses[d] of these things. 49 And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here
in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.
50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. 51 While he was
blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven.[e] 52 And they worshiped him,
and[f] returned to Jerusalem with great joy; 53 and they were continually in the temple blessing God.
Third Decade: The Descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-41)
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven
there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them
were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound
the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language
of each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And
how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and
residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt
and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11

Cretans and Arabsin our own languages we hear them speaking about Gods deeds of power. 12 All
were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? 13 But others sneered and
said, They are filled with new wine.
14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, Men of Judea and all who
live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as
you suppose, for it is only nine oclock in the morning. 16 No, this is what was spoken through the
prophet Joel:
17 In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and
your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream
dreams.
18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall
prophesy.
19 And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and
smoky mist.
20 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lords great
and glorious day.
21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
22 You that are Israelites,[a] listen to what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth,[b] a man attested to you by
God with deeds of power, wonders, and signs that God did through him among you, as you yourselves
know 23 this man, handed over to you according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you
crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law. 24 But God raised him up, having freed him
from death,[c] because it was impossible for him to be held in its power. 25 For David says concerning
him,
I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken;
26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; moreover my flesh will live in hope.
27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One experience corruption.
28 You have made known to me the ways of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.
29 Fellow Israelites,[d] I may say to you confidently of our ancestor David that he both died and was
buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn with
an oath to him that he would put one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Foreseeing this, David[e]
spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah,[f] saying,
He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh experience corruption.

32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that all of us are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at[g] the right
hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this
that you both see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,
The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, 35 until I make your enemies your footstool.
36 Therefore let the entire house of Israel know with certainty that God has made him both Lord and
Messiah,[h] this Jesus whom you crucified.
37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and to the other apostles,
Brothers,[i] what should we do? 38 Peter said to them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in
the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy
Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the
Lord our God calls to him. 40 And he testified with many other arguments and exhorted them, saying,
Save yourselves from this corrupt generation. 41 So those who welcomed his message were baptized,
and that day about three thousand persons were added.
