About RVCE
R.V. College of Engineering (RVCE), Bengaluru, Karnataka, South India, is one of the premier
Engineering institutions of the country. Established in 1963, RVCE celebrated its Golden Jubilee in
2015. The college has about 5600 students, over 400 faculty and 250 support staff. The college
offers 12 Bachelors and 22 Masters Programs in different disciplines of Engineering with an
annual intake of about 1750 students. The faculty and students are involved in research and
consultancy. There are 16 research centres with provision for Ph.D. Studies. RVCE has set its vision
Leadership in Quality Technical Education, Research & Innovation, through Teamwork, with focus
on Development of Sustainable and Inclusive Technology. In line with the vision, the faculty and
students are actively involved in interdisciplinary R &D activities and consultancy in collaboration
with public and private organizations. So far, RVCE has received grants for funded projects to the
th
tune of over Rs. 450 million. RVCE is rated 35 in the NIRF rating conducted by MHRD, Government
of India in 2016. RVCE has been awarded Engineering College of the Year-2015 by the Higher
Education Review Magazine for Enhancing Employability. RVCE has been certified as Global
League Institute by Great Place to Study Research Institute (GPSRI) on 19 November 2015 at the
prestigious venue - House of Commons, United Kingdom.
About the Conference
Smart Materials are designed materials which possess one or more properties which can be
significantly changed in controlled fashion by externally applied field such as stress, temperature,
electric and magnetic fields. Worldwide, considerable effort is deployed to develop smart
materials and structures. Smart Materials like, piezoelectric materials, electrostrictive materials,
magnetostrictive materials, shape memory materials, smart fluids, smart hydrogels,
electrochromic materials, phase change materials, nanomaterials, ceramics, smart textiles build
the global market and are increasing business turnover to provide the smarter service to create
smart world. The conference aims to disseminate state-of-the-art in smart materials and
derivatives of smart material systems- processing, characterization and applications.
Scope of the Conference
In view of the increasing applications of smart materials in several fields, they provide one of the
most promising emerging markets for equipment and materials suppliers in the coming years. This
conference enables to deepen and broaden knowledge of smart engineering materials and to
share innovative ideas and responsiveness to ever-increasing international needs. The objective of
this conference is to bring together experts from academia, professional engineers, industries and
research organizations for sharing of knowledge, expertise and experience in the emerging trends
related to smart multifunctional materials. The conference is structured with plenary lectures by
eminent researchers of international repute on the theme of the conference followed by
contributed papers along with poster presentations.
A pre-conference tutorial for novice researchers in the field of Smart Materials is scheduled on 20
October 2016 on 'Design and Simulation of smart materials' using Materials Studio software.
Material Studio is a complete modelling and simulation environment, designed to allow
researchers in materials science to predict and understand the relationships of materials atomic
and molecular structure with its properties and behaviour. The software is used in advanced
research of various materials such as polymers, nanotubes, catalysts, metals, and ceramics which
constitute smart materials.
