A Single Shard

ASingle Shard is a novel by Linda Sue Park and the main


character is called Tree-ear . Tree-ear is a very memorable
character and his personality changes majorly through
the text. At the start of the story Tree-ear admired Min
greatly but in the middle of the story he develops a strong
hatred for Min. He was a curious and determined boy.
At the start of the story Tree-ear was very fond of Min. He
hid behind the Paulownia trees everyday watching Min
craft his elegant pottery but one day he snuck inside and
damaged one of the master potters creations. As a
punishment he made Tree-ear work for 9 days, cutting
wood and collecting clay. Min was furious.
As Tree-ear worked he believed the thought that Min
would accept him as his pottery student . After more than
a week of working Tree-ear confronted Min. Tree-ear was
ready to be claimed as the the master potters student
but with no regrets Min rejected Tree -ear as he was not
his son. Tree-ears
Loathing for Min began here.
Tree-ear did not want see Min again. Tree-ear went back
to his friend Crane man and told him what had happened.
Then Tree remembered his promise. He was supposed to
take the master potters work to the king in Songdo. He
made up his mind that he wasnt going to do it for Min. He
was going to do it for Ajima , mins wife. Tree- ear
travelled village to village to the kingdom to present Mins
masterpiece but during his travel he decided came across
two inadequate men who brutally abused Tree-ear and

broke Mins pots one by one. By the end of the robbery


nothing was left of the pots.
He ran down quickly hoping that one had survived the fall
but all that was left was a single shard . Finally after
reaching the kingdom the king accepted Mins work. The
king provided Tree-ear transport home.
When he reached he was still mad at Min. Min confronted
him with a gloomy face. He told Tree-ear that his best
friend had passed away. Tree-ear was extremely sad until
Min and his wife offered to adopt him. Tree-ear was
overjoyed.
A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park is a great story. Tree
ear personality varied majorly through the text due to
devastating and amazing events such as when Crane man
died and when Tree-ear was adopted.
