Course Content

Use of basic metal and woodwork instruments (drilling, milling and sewing
machines), general principles of maintenance of basic equipment, safety rules
and compliance in workshop practice.

Course Description:

Modern science studies are usually wined on construction of various engineering

and scientific apparatus. It is important that each student is able to fabricate
simple laboratory apparatus, component assembled for both teaching and
research, must be conversant with the operation of some machine tools. He/she
must be able to draw and produce free hand sketches of production equipment,
tools and teaching materials. This course is designed to intimate students of
educational technology in the department of Science Education with the practical
use of various machines in the workshop. Students would be exposed to general
principles of maintenance of basic equipment and physical handling of the
equipment. As students visit the workshop, they learn basic rules that will make
them to comply with the practices expected in the workshop.
This course offers students an opportunity to gain experience woodworking while
earning a fine art/applied skills credit. This course also allows students to leave
school with some basic wood building skills and wood finishing techniques.
Projects may include holiday craft making, cultural wood carving/building,
coasters, chess pieces, jewellery boxes, woodturning and clocks. More
experienced students may be able to build musical instruments, kayaks and
small boats. Projects will be built with the finest quality materials and reduction of
waste will be kept in mind at all times.

Course Objectives

The general objective is to produce efficient Educational Technology graduates

who will have the skills and competences in the provision of support services in
different levels of education. Since the course is totally a practical oriented
course students are expected to do more of psychomotor.

Specifically at the end of the course, students would be able to:

Practically use basic metal and woodwork instruments.

Identify the general principles of maintenance of basic equipment
Practicalise the maintenance principles of relevant equipment.

Explain the safety rules in workshop practice. 5. Discuss how to comply with
workshop practices for successful improvisation actualization of the classroom
situation.

Course Requirement

This is a compulsory course for all the educational technology students at

300level. This is a 45hrs practical course and students are expected to improvise
relevant instructional materials. 75% attendance is mandatory before any student
can be allotted any score. They are expected to equally submit reports based on
all the experiences they gathered.

Grading Method

Attendance 20 Involvement in practical 20 Production of relevant instructional

materials 30 Report writing /Submission 30
Course Delivery Strategies and Practical Schedules
The course delivery would be through face to face, exposure to electronic
material, discussion and practical handling of the available equipment. Students
would spend the whole periods at the workshop .This course is the continuation
of ITE 204.Thus it is totally practical oriented.

LECTURES

Weeks 1&2 (first and second hours): The major hand processes in the workshop
are always associated with sawing, chiselling, filing, scraping and smoothening.
There is also a need to be familiar with machining methods, use of basic metal
and woodwork instruments (Drilling) At the end of the week, the students would
be able to practicalise the use of drilling machine. The instructor will lead the
discussion and expose them to what the drilling machine is all about and how it
can be adequately utilized.

Weeks 3&4

(first hour): Use of Basic metal and woodwork instruments (Milling) Students
would be able to practice the use of milling machine. The instructor will lead and
allow students to handle the milling machine. (Second hour) Students are given
the opportunity to interact with the available machine.

Weeks 5&6:

Use of Basic metal and woodwork instruments (Sewing machine) Objectives:

Students should be able to; 1. Handle sewing machine 2. Identify various parts of
the machine and their functions 3. Apply the knowledge gained to sew some
clothes or paper.

Description:

Students would have to learn how the machine is handled. They would be shown
each part of the machine and what it stands for. They are expected to practicalize
the handling and demonstrate by sowing some clothes.

Week 7-10:

General principles of maintenance of basic Equipment.

Objectives:
Students should be able to:

Master the major principles while maintaining basic equipment.

Practicalize the knowledge gained

Description: Students will handle the equipment and demonstrate how they are
supposed to be maintained.

Weeks 11&12:

Safety rules and compliance in workshop practice. Objective: students should be

able to demonstrate the safety precautions of equipments in the workshop.

Description:

97% of all accident can be traced to man failure and only 3% can be attributed to
any mechanical failure, it is evident that by eliminating the human element, you
have gone a long way towards solution of problem. The ITE 204 has laid the
foundation on which ITE 304 is built. Thus, students should be able to obey
some of the safety rules while handling the equipment. They are also expected
to practically demonstrate the rules. The safety rules include: 1. House KeepingA production workshop like other working environment should always be kept
clean and tidy. - Cutting metals left on the machine can cause wear and
damages to them. - Cutting on the bench may also cause personal injury 2. No

unskilled person is allowed to use machine until he/she has received instructions
on their use. 3. Always cultivate safety first habit.

Weeks 13-15:

General utilization of all the equipment individually.

Objective:

Students should be able to practicalize all the experiences they have gathered
individually.

Description:

In other words, participation in extensive practical exercise is essential. Here,

students will be given time to explain the hows while using the equipment.
Some materials would be produced individually using the available machine and
equipment. The materials would be presented by each student. There is no
examination attached, aside from the methods of grading that would be strictly
followed.

Project 1
Bench work

- Cut 1010cm of 4mm tick provided metal.

- Remove 2mm from each side
- Smooth file
- Find the center and drill a hole of 4mm
diameter

Project 2
Fabricate instructional box containing eight different shapes.
- Using sawing machine
- Using planning machine
