All about How to Perform Diwali Puja Vidhi

The festival of lights Diwali is approaching and we just cannot hold our excitement back. As per
Hindu mythology, this festival marked the return of Lord Ram to his kingdom in Ayodhya with his
wife Sita and brother Lakshman. People all over India celebrate this festival with much fervour.
Deepavali 2016 celebration starts from the 28th of October and goes on till the Nov 1.

Diwali is also the time to worship Goddess Lakshmi. The Goddess is a symbol of abundance,
beauty, light, wellness and prosperity. Most people perform Diwali puja as per the auspicious
muhurat. The Pradosh Kaal muhurat is the most auspicious time for Lakshmi pujan. There are
various steps to performing Diwali puja vidhi. Lets take a look at the important steps of the puja:

1. Clean every corner of your house and spread a fresh new cloth on the puja altar. Now, place
a handful of grains in the centre of the cloth and place a kalash (pot) on top of it. Fill threefourth of the kalash with water and put one betel nut, a coin, a flower, some rice grains and
five mango leaves.
2. Place a Ganesha idol in front of the Kalash on the right. You can also lay out an ink bottle
and your account books in the puja area. Place a Lakshmi idol next to the books. Light a diya
and start your puja as you offer haldi, kumkum and flowers to the placed Kalash. This is a
way to invoke the river goddess to be a part of water.
3. Chant the Lakshmi mantras from the Vedic texts to invoke the Goddess. You can also
shower the idol of Maa Lakshmi with flowers, fold your hands together, bow your head,
close your eyes, and pray to the Goddess.
4. Next, place the Lakshmi idol on a plate and bathe it with water, panchamrit (a mixture of
curd, ghee, sugar, honey and milk) and then with water containing a pearl or any kind of
gold ornament. Wipe it clean and place it back next to the Kalash.
5. On a thali, place some sandalwood paste, gulal, perfume or itr, haldi and kumkum. You can
also offer a garland of cotton beads to Goddess Lakshmi. You can also offer fruits, coconuts,
bel patta (wood apple leaves), marigold flowers and dhoop or incense sticks. You can easily
find these Diwali puja items online.

6. You can also make an offering of puffed rice and batasha. Now pour some of the batasha,
puffed rice, cumin and coriander seeds over the idol. Also, you can worship the safe deposit
box in your home as a symbol of Lord Kuber the God of abundance.
7. Lastly, perform aarti with the accompaniment of a small bell, as Goddess Lakshmi doesnt
like loud noises. Remember not to clap hands while doing aarti for Goddess Lakshmi. Keep
the aarti simple and as soundless and mellow as possible.
This is how you perform the Diwali puja as per the traditional rituals.
