NO TO NUCLEAR

As you can see with the given title above, you can clearly see that I oppose nuclear
powerplant. There are many factors why I oppose this kind of powerplant and they
are mainly because of the negative effects of this powerplant to the environment
and the society.
To start of this essay, let me discuss to you what is a nuclear powerplant. A nuclear
power plant is a type of power station that generates electricity using heat from
nuclear reactions. These reactions take place within a reactor. The plant also has
machines which remove heat from the reactor to operate a steam turbine and
generator to make electricity. Electricity made by nuclear power plants is called
nuclear power. Nuclear power plants are usually near water to remove the heat the
reactor makes. Some nuclear power plants use cooling towers to do this. Nuclear
power plants use uranium as fuel. When the reactor is on, uranium atoms inside the
reactor split into two smaller atoms. When uranium atoms split, they give off a
large amount of heat. This splitting of atoms is called fission. The most popular
atoms to fission are uranium and plutonium. Those atoms are slightly radioactive.
The atoms produced when fuel atoms break apart are strongly radioactive. And as
of the moment, there are about four hundred nuclear power plants in the world,
with many in the United States, France, and Japan.
So we can see that nuclear powerplant really does/or can generate an adequate
amount of electricity needed by the society. So with this, the government has really
come up with a plan to build this kind of powerplants mainly because to meet the
demands of power by the society especially the philippines has a population of
approximately 100 million. Yes, there are many positive things/advantages we can
have and get from nuclear powerplant especially enough power supply.
But on the contrary, a nuclear powerplant has its own disadvantages too. So what
are these disadvantages? Basically they are the radioactive waste, nuclear
accidents, nuclear radiation, high cost, national risk, impact on aquatic life, major
impact on human life, fuel availability, and lastly its non-renewable.
So lets start with radioactive waste. The waste produced by nuclear reactors needs
to be disposed off at a safe place since they are extremely hazardous and can leak
radiations if not stored properly. And such kind of waste emits radiations from tens
to hundreds of years. The storage of radioactive waste has been major bottleneck

for the expansion of nuclear programs. The nuclear wastes contain radio isotopes
with long half-lives. This means that the radio isotopes stay in the atmosphere in
some form or the other. These reactive radicals make the sand or the water
contaminated. It is known as mixed waste. The mixed wastes cause hazardous
chemical reactions and leads to dangerous complications. The radioactive wastes
are usually buried under sand and are known as vitrification. So witht the given
explanation. How will the Philippines dispose this waste? Especially its very
hazardous to the environment and society.
And for the possibility of nuclear accidents, we all know that so many new
technologies have been put in place to make sure that such disasters wont happen
again like the ones Chernobyl or more recently Fukushima but the risk associated
with nuclear powerplants is still relatively high. Even small radiation leaks can
cause devastating effects. People who work at nuclear power plants and live near
those areas are at high risk of facing nuclear radiations, if it happens. So with this
explanation, we see that nuclear accidents are very dangerous. And as we all know,
one of the causes why nuclear accidents happen is because of earthquake and with
the Philippines geological location, we all know that we always experience
earthquakes and other catastrophes. With this, we must not build nuclear
powerplants since our geological location is not very suitable for avoiding nuclear
accidents. And how will the Philippine government address this problem? If this
will happen?
And another disadvantage of nuclear powerplants is nuclear radiation. They
produce nuclear radiation because they have power reactors that are called breeders
in which this produce plutonium. an element which is not found in the nature
however it is a fissionable element. It is a by-product of the chain reaction and is
very harmful if introduced in the nature. Nuclear radiation is very dangerous
especiallt to the environment and the society living nearby.
Another practical disadvantage of using nuclear energy is that it needs a lot of
investment in order to be constructed and set up. It is not always possible by the
developing countries to afford such a costly source of alternative energy. Nuclear
power plants normally take 5-10 years to construct as there are several legal
formalities to be completed and mostly it is opposed by the people who live

nearby. With this, where will the philipppine government get monetary funds to
fund this project of building powerplant? And also with the fact, there are many
corrupt officials and misuse of budget? Why will the Philippine spend a huge
amount of money for this project when there are a lot of projects that need funds
that are much more important like housing for the poor?
Another disadvantage of nuclear powerplant is national risk. As we all know
Nuclear energy has given us the power to produce more weapons than to produce
things that can make the world a better place to live in. Thats why it is very much
needed to become more careful and responsible while using nuclear energy to
avoid any sort of major accidents since they are hot targets for militants and
terrorist organizations. Security is a major concern here. A little lax in security can
prove to be lethal and brutal for humans and even for this planet. So how will the
Philippine address this problem when this happens?
Another major disadvanatage of nuclear powerplant is its impact on aquatic life in
which nuclear powerplant can cause Eutrophication which is another result of
radioactive wastes. There are many seminars and conferences being held every
year to look for a specific solution. But there is no outcome as of now. And Reports
say that radioactive wastes take almost 10,000 years to get back to the original
form. As we all know, the Philippines is very much blessed with aquatic resources.
Thats why we shouldnt build nuclear powerplant since this could damage our
aquatic resources.
Another major disadvanatage too of nuclear powerplant is its major impact on
human life. We all remember the disaster caused during the Second World War
after the nuclear bombs were dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Even after
five decades of the mishap, children are born with defects. This is primarily
because of the nuclear effect. Do we have any remedy for this? The answer is still
no.
Another disadvantage of nuclear powerplant is its fuel availability. Unlike fossil
fuels which are available to most of the countries, uranium is very scarce resource
and exist in only few of the countries. Permissions of several international
authorities are required before someone can even thought of building a nuclear
power plant. How will the Philippine government get this kind of resource?

And lastly the last disadvantage of nuclear powerplant is it is non-renewable.

Nuclear energy uses uranium which is a scarce resource and is not found in many
countries. Most of the countries rely on other countries for the constant supply of
this fuel. It is mined and transported like any other metal. Supply will be available
as long as it is there. Once all extracted, nuclear plants will not be of any use. Due
to its hazardous effects and limited supply, it cannot be termed as renewable.
So to sum up everything, I have typed here. I oppose the plans of the of the
Philippine government to create nuclear powerplant specifically in Bataan,
Batangas, Quezon, Cagayan, Cavite, Palawan, Negros Occidental, Negros
Orriental, Zamboanga Del Norte and Sarangani.
There are many kinds of powerplants that we can build that has lesser negative
effect on the environment and society specifically renewable powerplants. We can
always find solution on every problem. We must create the best choice not just for
the good of ourselves but also for the future of our generation and our childrens.
