October 2016

So far in our 2016 season

With less than a third of the
season left to play, the St. Olaf
College Womens Soccer Team
finds themselves with a record of
6-5, 3-4 in the MIAC. There are a
few highlights of the season so far
that show the resilience that we
play with: 1) After suffering a
heartbreaking 1-0 double
overtime loss to nationally ranked
Loras College in the 119th minute,
we bounced back the next day
against UW Oshkosh to find
ourselves in the exact same
scenario After being down 1-0
in the first half against Oshkosh,
we were able to fight back to tie
the game early in the second half
with a goal scored by junior, Abby
Stets, and then score a goal late
in the second overtime period
thanks to first- year, Mackenzie
Schoustra. 2) A 3-1 victory over

the 2015 MIAC Champions

Gustavus. Gustavus had not
given up a goal all season, but
that changed less than 10
minutes into the first half when
senior, Lauren Martin scored a
goal from a one-touch shot that
went into the upper 90. Firstyear, Claire Bash, scored off a
corner kick just minutes later, and
Abby Stets scored the 3rd goal of
the day for the Oles off of another
corner kick, taken by senior
defender, Grace Bestler. 3) On
the defensive side of the ball,
sophomore goalkeeper, Julie
Johnson and the rest of the Ole
backline earned their first shutout
against Hamline University, with
a dominating 2-0 performance
from the team.

Senior defender #3 Lauren Martin scoring the first goal

of the game against Gustavus

Sophomore GK #1 Julie Johnson and the rest of the

team earned their first shutout with a 2-0 victory over
MIAC rival Hamline University.

FEED MY STARVING CHILDREN

Here, the team is volunteering at Feed

My Starving Children, a non-profit
organization that provides complete
nutritional meals to children nationally
and globally who are malnourished. In
recent years this has become a tradition
during preseason.
Additionally, many team members have been closely affected by
cancer and we want to help fight back. STOWS is hosting a 3v3
soccer tournament on October 21. You can donate to the teams
fundraising page by going online to the following website:

Special thank you to the Stets

Family for hosting an amazing
dinner for parents and players to
kick off preseason and to the Fisco
family for inviting us to their home
for some much needed relaxation
later in preseason!

Pool Recoveries
This years preseason included a pool recovery session
every couple of days. Pool recoveries were a lot like a
traditional dynamic warmup, just in the water.

Talent Show Magic

Sophomore Julie Johnson helped her sophomore class
to a talent show victory by tying her shoes without
using her hands.

14 & 2
Preseason consisted of 14 days or practices, with
two practices a day.

15
The average number of runs from one goal line to the
far 18 yard box done in 18 seconds be our players. The
highest number achieved by one player was 36.

2016 Preseason: pool recoveries

and a talent show
The team arrived on campus in
Northfield two weeks early to
prepare for the 2016 season. It
was nice to only have to focus on
soccer for these two weeks, and
we saw hard work and
improvement from each player.
First-year head coach Rachael
Sushner brought some new
activities to the St. Olaf
Womens Soccer preseason. For
example, pool sessions for
recovery. After a couple sessions,
the players grew to love this time
dedicated solely to relieving
muscle soreness during the two
most physically grueling weeks
of the year. Coach Sushner also
brought a new tradition to
preseason. In August 2016, the
first annual St. Olaf College
Womens Soccer Team talent
show took place!!! Each class
participated together. The firstyears put together a preseason
themed fashion show. The
senior class downed a full can of
whipped cream in less than a
minute. The juniors were the
runners-up. Nicki Minajs hit

interpretive dancing. The
winners, however, were the
sophomore class. The
sophomores put on a magic
show, complete with fortune
reading, card tricks, and even a
trick in which shoes were tied
without the use of hands.
Congrats sophomores! We also
had a goal- setting team
meeting, where the team
decided what it wanted to
accomplish this season. Goals
were both tangible and
intangible, with the overarching
goal to maintain a positive and
encouraging environment every
single day.

Stay Connected!
It was great to see plenty of
friendly faces on October 8th!
We loved having some of our
alumnae back on campus to
cheer us on against Macalester.
(Well do our best to get a better
result the next time you come
back.) It was nice for the players
to have familiar voices cheering
us on, and it was good for the
first years to witness just how
strong the Ole soccer bond is.
We will have an alumni game
during our spring season in May,
and we hope to see as many of
you as possible! Until then, be
sure to follow us on social media
