Packers hold Giants to 199 passing yards

While Green Bays rush defense earned respect as one of the

top units in the NFL, the Packers secondary continued to get

burned over the first three weeks

of the season.
Minnesotas Stefon Diggs had
182 receiving yards in a Week 2
victory over Green Bay, and Detroits Marvin Jones posted 205
receiving yards in Week 3.

Coming out of the Week 4 bye

facing a dynamic offense in the
New York Giants, Green Bay, without its top two cornerbacks, Sam
Shields (concussion) and Damarious Randall (groin), allowed fewer
than 200 passing yards to two-time
Super Bowler MVP Eli Manning
and his receivers.

I think, going into the bye,

we werent satisfied, defensive
back Micah Hyde said. We had
a bad taste in our mouth with
the big plays we gave up and
the second half we gave Detroit.
Coming into this week, we knew,

especially with the receivers that they had, the

challenge was going to be
for us.
Shields was ruled out
early in the week, giving
cornerback Quinten Rollins plenty of time to prepare for the start. Randall
was a late scratch from
the lineup, forcing LaDarius Gunter into action
against Odell Beckham
Jr., Sterling Shepard and
Victor Cruz.
Rollins and Gunter,
for the most part, played
well.
Those guys study,
they are always prepared and always ready
for when their number is
called, and they displayed
that, safety Morgan Burnett said. Im very proud
of Ladarius and Quinten.
They did a great job, and
we had a lot of fun out
there.
The road doesnt get
any easier for the defense,
with the Dallas Cowboys
and rookie quarterback
Dak Prescott coming to
Lambeau on Sunday.

Prescott
has
not
thrown an interception in
his first five games. He is
just eight pass attempts
away from breaking Tom
Bradys record of passes
prior to his first interception to start a career.
Prescott could also get
receiver Dez Bryant back.
Bryant has been battling
a knee injury, but in his
absence, slot receiver
Cole Beasley and veteran
tight end Jason Witten
have picked up the slack.
Rookie running back
Ezekiel Elliott is one of
the best in the NFL, running behind perhaps the
best offensive line in the
league.
If the Packers defensive line can get after
Prescott like it did against
Eli Manning, which included four sacks and
five quarterback hits, the
secondary can continue
to make plays on the back
end.
As the season goes
on, you want to gain some
momentum, and I think
were doing that, Hyde
said. At the same time,
were leaving a lot of plays
out there that we can improve on, and we are go-

ing to watch film.

The five defensive
backs, Gunter, Rollins,
Hyde, Burnett and safety
Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix, put
together their best defensive effort in the victory
Sunday, but they know
how quickly one bad performance can overshadow a strong one.
It was a great team effort. It was great to get the
win, but at the same time,
the NFL is so week by
week, Hyde said. Youre
only as good as the last
game. We can go out the
next game an lay an egg,
and everyone is going to
forget this game.
At least they know
what it takes to shut down
an opposing offense for a
complete game, a valuable lesson in the passheavy NFL.
I feel like it takes a
collective effort. You dont
stop one guy with just one
person, Burnett said. It
takes a group effort, and
thats what we did. We
communicated well together, we worked together, competed together
and trusted one another,
and I think thats the most
important thing.

The Packers offensive line helped Eddie Lacy and James Starks combine for 114 rushing yards in Sundays victory over the Giants.

For a group thrown for

a loss by the unexpected
release of its most recognizable member, the Green
Bay Packers offensive line
has come together nicely
during the first four games.
The unit was especially
impressive during Sunday
nights 23-16 victory over
the New York Giants, paving the way for 147 rushing yards and giving quarterback Aaron Rodgers
all kinds of time to throw.
Rodgers dropped back to
pass 50 times and was not
sacked, despite facing topflight edge rushers Olivier

Vernon and Jason PierrePaul, while running back

Eddie Lacy found running
lanes despite the presence
of hulking run-stuffing defensive tackle Johnathan
Hankins.
Our
offensive
line
played extremely well,
coach Mike McCarthy said
Monday. I think like anything, it starts in the running game. Eddie ran hard,
broke a lot of tackles, (and

excellent, particularly in

to hold the ball (and) throw

Players especially veteran guard T.J. Lang and

when Sitton quickly signed

Fourth-year guard Lane
Taylor has stepped in and
played well, despite having started just two career
games before this season.
I knew people would be
worried. Ive only started
two games before, Taylor said. Obviously no one
wanted to see Josh leave,
but when I became the
starter, everyone was behind me and supported me.
And we just went on about
our business. I have to just
keep it rolling.

Running back Eddie
Lacy, who carried 11 times
for 81 yards before leaving
the game with a sprained
left ankle, praised the
group, too.

What they did (Sunday) night, you cant ask for

much more than that, he
said. I really think we have
the momentum going as far
as running the ball. We just
have to keep it up. We want
to tire out defenses and
take it through the rest of
the season.
Rodgers,
meanwhile,
was amazed by how much
time his line afforded him
on a night when he made
several great throws but
also had multiple misfires
that contributed to an uneven performance.
We had a good night
running
the
football.
Against two premier pass
rushers who are getting
paid a lot of money, we
did a good job, he said.
I thought I moved well
enough but didnt have to
a lot of times. I could stay
in the pocket and thats a
big credit to those guys up
front.
Rodgers said the offenses challenge now is to
make sure other aspects
including his own play
measure up to the quality the offensive line is providing, starting with next
Sundays game against the
Dallas Cowboys at Lambeau Field.

Romos status unclear

as Prescott question
looms for Cowboys
Rookie quarterback
2-0 in road games
The Associated Press

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott (4) and running back Ezekiel Elliott (21) started the season as a Dallas novelty
not seen since Roger Staubach and Calvin Hill nearly 50 years ago. Now the rookie quarterback-running back combo is
setting NFL records before facing Green Bay on Sunday.

Tony Romo was expected to

have an MRI on Monday, with Dallas owner Jerry Jones believing the
results would show that his quarterbacks fourth back injury in less
than four years has healed.
Coach Jason Garrett didnt provide an update, but did indicate that
the 36-year-old Romo wont be officially listed as a participant in practice this week. The Cowboys visit
Green Bay (3-1) on Sunday before
their bye week.
I think its day to day, and that
seems a little further down the
road, Garrett said.
Its been almost seven weeks
since Romo broke a bone in his back
when he was tackled awkwardly in a
preseason game at Seattle. Rookie
Dak Prescott has led the Cowboys
(4-1) to four straight wins after they
went 1-11 without Romo last season.

While Garrett refuses to be

drawn into a Prescott-Romo debate,
Jones is doing his best to show enthusiasm for the surprising newcomer and respect for his beloved
incumbent, the first $100 million
player in franchise history.
Tony is our No. 1 quarterback,
and were going to have the luxury
of being able to, I think, see them
both, Jones said after Sundays
28-14 victory over Cincinnati. I welcome the opportunity of having Dak
playing at this level and Tony back
in excellent health. Its going to be
really special for the Cowboys.
Romo has been throwing as part
of his rehab, but hasnt practiced
since the injury. The 10-year starter
has had back surgery twice since
2013, along with two other back injuries that didnt require an operation,
including the most recent. He broke
his left collarbone twice last season.
Meantime, Prescott has avoided the types of mistakes that have
plagued Romo throughout his career.

ery day, Garrett said, repeating a familiar refrain

throughout Prescotts winning streak. Tony is doing
that with his rehab. Then
Dak has to continue doing
what hes doing, prepare
as well as he can and go
play as well as he can and
thats pretty much where
our focus is.
The Cowboys are visiting the Packers for the
third straight season, start-

ing with a loss in the divisional round of the playoffs

in 2014. The 28-7 loss last
season was one of seven in
eight starts for Matt Cassel, the second of three
veteran backups who failed
filling in for Romo.
In two road victories,
Prescott has led a fourthquarter rally to beat Washington and overcome a
14-0 deficit in San Francisco. Now the former Missis-

sippi State standout visits

Lambeau Field.
Its an historic place,
but once I get there, I will
be locked in, Prescott
said. I will be locked into
the game plan, that defense, and what we have to
do to win the game.
And if Prescott beats
Aaron Rodgers for a 5-1
start, the questions will
keep coming for Garrett
and Jones.
Ill show you some
hard days around here
without a quarterback
(that would) really want
to make you pout, OK?
Jones said. Thats not a
problem to have that.

John Fox and the Chicago

I have done my best to remain steadfast in saying it is unfair to offer an

Its time, and we should be very worried. Roughly 500 words to go and I can

True. Sadly, it is also true the Bears

I am not lobbying for Loggains firing, resignation or a change at offensive

hat do you do when an irresistible

force meets an immovable object?
That is the dilemma facing fantasy
owners as Atlanta and their No. 1
offense travels to face the No. 1 defense in Seattle. Weve been slow to
come around on Atlanta, but after dominating the
previously undefeated Broncos in Denver, Falcons
doubters should be reconsidering their position. Atlanta is averaging a mammoth 457 yards per game
60 yards more than the second-ranked Cowboys. On
the other side of the ball, Seattles defense is allowing just 264 yards per game.
Our advice? Obviously, this is a better fantasy
matchup for Seattle. Atlantas defense is ranked 26th
and Russell Wilson is a lot better than Paxton Lynch.
But even though this is a tough matchup for Atlantas O, Julio Jones remains a must start every week,
and it would be very difficult to sit Matt Bryant or
Devonta Freeman. Tevin Coleman is worth a look,
especially in PPR leagues, but avoid Matt Bryant and
the Falcons D/ST. Go ahead and play your Seahawks,
including their D/ST.

MATCHUPS TO EXPLOIT
Pittsburgh Steelers

OPPONENT: AT MIAMI DOLPHINS, SUNDAY, NOON

Miamis 28th-ranked defense is giving up more than
400 yards of offense per game. The Steelers counter
with the NFLs fifth-ranked offense. The Dolphins
have given up the most rushing yards in the league
and look like a team on the verge of collapse. Since
getting pantsed by the Eagles in Week 3, the Steelers
have gained 869 yards and scored 74 points in the past
two weeks. Sammie Coates is finally emerging as the
No. 2 option in Pittsburgh, but he is still dropping too
many passes.
MUST START: Ben Roethlisberger, LeVeon Bell, Antonio Brown
SOLID PLAY: Coates, Chris Boswell, Steelers D/ST
WORTH A LOOK: Jesse James
LAST RESORT: Markus Wheaton
STAY AWAY: DeAngelo Williams

Carolina Panthers

OPPONENT: AT NEW ORLEANS SAINTS, SUNDAY, NOON

The enduring incompetence of the Saints defense
is equal parts comical and baffling. Yielding 423
yards of offense per game, New Orleans is ranked
31st in defense for the third consecutive season. You
would think, at some point, improving the defense
might become a priority for Saints brass. Until
someone in the bayou gets the memo, fantasy owners should take advantage.
Its been a nightmare of a season for the Panthers,
but this would be a good time to right the ship, for
one week anyway. Cam Newton (concussion) should

be back and hes the best QB play of the week. Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) should also return, but be
sure to check the status of both players. This is also
a good matchup for Drew Brees and the Saints offense. As of this writing there was no over/under on
the game, but its likely to be around 50. Carolinas
defense is not what it used to be.
MUST START: Newton*, Greg Olsen
SOLID PLAY: Stewart*, Kelvin Benjamin, Graham
Gano
WORTH A LOOK: Cameron Artis-Payne (if no
Stewart)
LAST RESORT: Fozzy Whitaker, Corey Brown, Ted
Ginn
STAY AWAY: Panthers D/ST

Tennessee Titans

OPPONENT: VS CLEVELAND BROWNS, SUNDAY, NOON

Tennessee is no offensive juggernaut, but Cleveland is giving up right around 30 points and 400
yards per game. The Titans rolled up 398 yards last
week in Miami and they should enjoy similar success this week. Marcus Mariota has limited fantasy
value over the season, but hes worth considering
this week. He threw for only 163 yards in Miami, but
notched three TD passes and ran for 60 yards and
a score. DeMarco Murray is coming off a 127-yard
performance and is one of the best RB plays of the
week.
MUST START: Murray, Delanie Walker
SOLID PLAY: Mariota, Titans D/ST
WORTH A LOOK: Derrick Henry, Ryan Succop
LAST RESORT: Tajae Sharpe, Rishard Matthews

Houston Texans

OPPONENT: VS INDIANAPOLIS COLTS, SUNDAY, 7:30

Is it too early to flex the Sunday night game?
Though this game is meaningful to the standings in
a bad AFC South, the two teams featured have been
outscored a combined 252-219. Houston has been
terrible on offense, averaging just 16.4 points per
game tied with the Rams for dead last in the NFL.
Theyve not been much better with yardage, producing 310 yards (27th) per game. Wait a minute this is
listed as a matchup to exploit, so lets change gears
here.
If Houston were ever going to get things going
and if Brock Osweiler were ever going to begin
to live up to the bajillion dollars (might need to
fact check his contract) he got last offseason this
would be the week. The Colts and their 30th ranked
D just allowed Brian Hoyer to throw for 397 yards.
Yes, the same Brian Hoyer who was ridden out of
Houston on a rail after he was intercepted 47 times
in a playoff loss (again, fact check that INT stat).
DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller should produce
much better than last week when they faced a ferocious Minnesota defense. Because Houston trailed
the entire game, Lamar Miller got just nine touches
in the loss to the Vikings. Miller should get a heavy
workload this week and it would be an excellent
time for his first TD as a Texan.

MUST START: Miller, Hopkins

SOLID PLAY: Fuller, Nick Novak, Texans D/ST
WORTH A LOOK: Osweiler
LAST RESORT: Jaelen Strong, C.J. Fiedorowicz,
Ryan Griffin

MATCHUPS TO AVOID
San Francisco 49ers

OPPONENT: AT BUFFALO BILLS, SUNDAY, NOON

Theres not much to like about SF on any given week,
but traveling across country to play an early game
against a feisty defense well, matchups dont get

Cincinnati Bengals

OPPONENT: AT NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS, SUNDAY, NOON

Its not been a good season thus far for Cincinnati. Since a close victory over the Jets in Week 1,
the Bengals have just one victory (against a bad
Miami team). Cincy has yet to score more than 23
points in a game. Their offense is ranked fifth in
passing, but just 26th in rushing. They are gaining
a meager 3.4 yards per attempt. The Pats have the
leagues 13th-ranked defense (9th against the run,
18th against the pass). Jeremy Hill (chest) appeared
on last weeks injury report but was removed from
the list on Friday. However, he did not start the
game and had only four carries in the second half
when he aggravated the injury and did not return.
If Hill is inactive, Giovani Bernard is worth a look,
especially in PPR.
MUST START: A.J. Green
SOLID PLAY: None
WORTH A LOOK: Andy Dalton, Bernard, Brandon

STAY AWAY: C.J. Uzomah, Tyler Kroft,

Dallas Cowboys

OPPONENT: AT GREEN BAY PACKERS, SUNDAY, 3:25

Probably the most interesting game of the week,
this looks like a well-below-average matchup for the
Cowboys and their second-ranked offense. Green Bay
is allowing just 2 yards per rush attempt. If Ezekiel
Elliot is contained, the Cowboys will be forced out of
their comfort zone. On the other hand, Dallas seems to
rise to the challenge each week, and Elliot is an elite
RB. Bryant is likely to be sidelined until after next
weeks bye but monitor his status.
MUST START: Elliot
SOLID PLAY: None
WORTH A LOOK: Dak Prescott, Bryant*, Jason Witten

ARTHUR
ARKUSH
OVERVIEW

They call him Big Play for a reason. Darius

Slay, Detroits No. 1 corner and best defender as
long as Ezekiel Ansah and DeAndre Levy remain sidelined, is the man most responsible for
extending the Lions season in Week 5. In a twoplay span late in the fourth quarter against the
Eagles, Slay generated two takeaways which
tripled the season total for coordinator Teryl
Austins group and helped snap the Lions threegame slide. Slays crunch-time performance salvaged a strong first half by Matthew Stafford
and the offense one week after it laid an egg in
Chicago. The win also takes the heat off Jim
Caldwell for now as illustrated by the usually
stoic boss animated sideline celebration following Slays forced fumble. The Rams remain
surprisingly atop the NFC West despite falling
to the Bills at home, 30-19.

MATCHUP TO WATCH

Aaron Donalds 14 QB hits are tied with Vikings DT Tom Johnson for the NFL lead. Hell
tussle with RG Larry Warford and struggling
Lane Tech graduate Laken Tomlinson, who
was benched twice from his left guard post in
Week 5. Donald had a pair of sacks in Detroits
21-14 road defeat to the Rams last December.

OVERVIEW

Another uneven offensive showing and unrelenting defensive outing propelled the Packers to 3-1
following their 23-16 home victory over the Giants.
Despite missing its top corners, Sam Shields (concussion) and Damarious Randall (groin), Dom Capers
group grounded a sputtering Giants offense with a
steady pass rush that capitalized against turnstile
LT Ereck Flowers. Aaron Rodgers and Co. emerged
from the bye with another methodical start on offense, powered by balance, superb protection and ball
control to build a 17-6 halftime lead they wouldnt relinquish. But Rodgers blockers and receiver Randall
Cobb, not Rodgers, looked like the best players on the
field a sight were still not used to seeing, as increasingly often as it appears. Dallas sensational rookie
backfield of Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott led the
Cowboys to a dominating win over Cincinnati.

MATCHUP TO WATCH

Its a far cry from immobile Eli Manning and middling Orleans Darkwa and Bobby Rainey to Prescott
and Elliott. The NFLs stoutest run D and its not
close faces a step up in class when Dallas rides its
young horses into Lambeau. Nick Perry and Clay
Matthews will be tested by rushers who can gain the
edge instantly, and Mike Daniels and Letroy Guion
versus Pro Bowl C Travis Frederick and All-Pro RG
Zach Martin should make for terrific battles.

PACKERS NOTEBOOK
3 PLAYS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

NICK PERRY
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Green Bay Packers enter this

weeks games ranked 12th in the NFL in
scoring.
The Packers enter Sundays showdown
against Dallas ranked 25th in total offense
and 27th in passing offense, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers has the worst completion percentage in the NFL.
But the Packers believe their offense is close to returning to form.
For proof, they point to last weeks
victory over the Giants. The Packers
scored only 23 points but were three
plays away from a much bigger day.
Its usually one or two or three
plays that can define your
overall performance or
the perception of the
performance, coach
Mike McCarthy said.
So were in tune with
that, we understand
it.
Three plays stick out
against the Giants. A
drop by receiver Jordy
Nelson at the 10-yard
line late in the first
quarter
resulted
in an interception
and likely took
three or seven
points off the
scoreboard.
Another drop
by
Nelson
in the third
quarter
eliminated
a big play
that could
have put
the Packers in scoring range.
A drop by
tight end Richard Rodgers in the end
zone in the fourth quarter resulted in a four-point difference. Had
the Packers made those three
plays, they would have blown out
the Giants and Aaron Rodgers
would have thrown for more than
300 yards.
We dont turn the ball over (in
the first quarter), so were up by
two scores. It probably changes a
lot of things, Aaron Rodgers said.
Thats the game. Its one or two
plays here or there that, if theyd gone
our way, if we had executed better, that
it would have looked a lot better on pa-

per and actually live, as well.

Its the potential if not the production
that has the Cowboys on edge.
He still makes a ton of plays from what
we can tell, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett
said. He can make plays from the pocket,
he makes plays out in space. At different
times, theyve kind of shot themselves in
the foot, like every offense thats ever been
assembled has, and sometimes those situations are hard to overcome. But theyre
doing what they need to do to win games.

PERRY DOWNPLAYS FAST START

After an inconsistent and injury-plagued

first four seasons in the NFL, outside linebacker Nick Perry returned to Green Bay
with a one-year, $5.05 million free-agent
deal. Both sides are feeling good about
the return on investment. Perry has 4.5
sacks in four games. Thats already a career high. Hell have a key role in stopping
Dallas potent running game and then putting the heat on rookie quarterback Dak
Prescott.
Theres a lot of football left. I just look
forward to playing it one game at a time,
thats really all I can do, all I can focus on,
Perry said. Whats done is done, we can
always look back to that. But my main focus is moving forward and continuing what
Im doing.

THE OTHER FINE LINE

Dallas offensive line is considered the

best of the business. According to FootballOutsiders.coms metrics from this
week, the Cowboys line ranks No. 1 in run
blocking and No. 11 in protection. However, according to ProFootballFocus.coms
rankings from last week, the Packers have
the second-best line while the Cowboys
line ranks fifth. The Packers dominance
was evident vs. the Giants, when Rodgers
wasnt sacked and barely was pressured in
45 dropbacks and Eddie Lacy averaged 7.4
yards per attempt.
I think theyve played really well, Rodgers said. I think you could pick each one
out and say a bunch of nice things about
them, which Ive done in the past, but I
think as a whole, theyve played really
well. Theyve done a good job of blocking
against the run, theyve limited the amount
of sacks and pressures, and its been nice
having them be able to stay healthy and
play well together. I think Lane (Taylors)
done a really nice job for us. You guys were
really worried about him stepping in, but I
think hes done a really nice job for us.

GETTING BY WITHOUT BRYANT

Without receiver Dez Bryant, who is

out with a hairline fracture of his knee,

Prescott has turned to slot receiver Cole
Beasley (27 receptions) and ageless tight
end Jason Witten (24 receptions) to carry
the passing game. In his 14th season,
Witten has caught 1,044 passes for 11,447
yards and 60 touchdowns. He ranks only
behind Tony Gonzalez among tight ends in
career receptions and receiving yards.
First of all, hes amazing physically,
Garrett said. We test in the offseason with
our strength and conditioning program.
His scores with all of the testing we do is
as good or better than it has been throughout his career. Hes a really, really smart
player, hes a really instinctive player, he
has a great feel for the technique he wants
to use, he has a great understanding of
defenses and how they want to stop him.
Both as a blocker and a receiver, hes really on the cutting edge of allowing himself to
play at the highest level and that, coupled
with the desire to keep his body right with
all the extra work he does, has allowed him
to be a Pro Bowl player.

PRESCOTT PLAYING
LIKE A VETERAN

Without Tony Romo for most of last season, the Cowboys stumbled to a 4-12 record
including a 28-7 loss to Green Bay in December with Matt Cassel at quarterback.
Romo suffered a broken bone in his back
during the preseason. This time, however,
the Cowboys arent crumbling. Thats because of Prescott, the teams fourth-round
pick. He has completed 69.0 percent of his
passes with four touchdowns and, impressively, zero interceptions. If he makes it
through his first seven passes without an
interception on Sunday, hell break Tom
Bradys NFL-record string of 161 consecutive passes without an interception to start
a career.
Prescott ranks eighth with a 101.5 passer rating. Fellow rookie Carson Wentz is
sixth with a 103.5 rating.
I think thats a credit to the quarterbacks that are doing it, but I dont think its
as simple as the position, McCarthy said.
Theres a lot more that goes into it. I know
playing a rookie quarterback is a challenge. What I learned from my experience
of playing a young quarterback before hes
ready is can the team handle the rookie
quarterback? Thats just my opinion. This
has nothing to do with the team were playing this week or how their quarterback is
playing but, going through it personally,
theres so many components that go into
making your team successful and the
quarterback position successful. Thats
what Ive learned from that experience.

The Dallas defense isnt good in any one

category. It ranks 16th in yards and 26th in
yards per play, 11th in rushing and 29th in
rushing yards per play, and 19th in passing
yards per game and per play. Theyre also
24th on third down, 23rd in interception percentage and 21st in sack percentage. And
yet, Dallas ranks eighth with 18.2 points allowed per game.
The standout players are defensive end
DeMarcus Lawrence, linebacker Sean Lee
and cornerback Morris Claiborne. In 14
games last season, Lee had 128 tackles (9.1
per game), including 11 for losses, and deflected five passes. In five games this year,
he has 45 tackles (9.0 per game), including
two for losses, and has deflected one pass.
Hes more of a lateral player, so it will be
interesting to see how he fairs against the
power running of Green Bays Eddie Lacy,
assuming he plays through an injured ankle. Lacy ranks fifth in the NFL with 5.46
yards per carry and piled up 81 yards on
11 carries against a Giants defense that
entered the night ranked third in yards allowed per carry. The Packers need Lacy to
play. The only other option on the roster is
James Starks, who is averaging 1.8 yards
per carry on 24 attempts.
Lawrence is the top pass rusher. He had
eight sacks last year but opened this season
with a four-game suspension. He had three
pressures in limited playing time last week
vs. Cincinnati. Claiborne, the sixth pick of

the 2012 draft, once was seen as a borderline bust. He started just 10 games total in
2013 and 2014. Now, he has emerged as a
top corner. He has one interception but had
a big hand in Dallas limiting prolific Bengals receiver A.J. Green to four catches for
50 yards last week. The other corner, veteran Brandon Carr, is no slouch. The safety
tandem of Byron Jones and Barry Church
completes a quality secondary. Church is a
rugged hitter while Jones, last years firstround pick, is an athletic freak who leads
the team with eight passes defensed.
The Packers need to get their passing
attack in gear, which is why coach Mike McCarthy said theyd spend more time on that
phase of the game this week.
You get what you emphasize, McCarthy said.
Aaron Rodgers has completed 56.1 percent of his passes and is averaging 6.30
yards per attempt. Both figures rank near
the bottom of the NFL.
Its certainly different for him because
hes been at the top of the league in every
category since his first start many years
ago, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said.
Hes obviously one of the elite players in
the game and, to me, a Hall of Fame quarterback. We watch the tape, we dont really look at the numbers as much as other
people, and hes just an outstanding player.
They have so many weapons on offense,
and they do such a good job of putting those
guys in position to have success. So we fully
recognize the challenge that he and the
Packers offense presents.

ranked rushing defense vs.

Dallas top-ranked rushing
offense. The Packers have
allowed 171 rushing yards
in four games. The Cowboys, led by rampaging
rookie Ezekiel Elliott, are
averaging 155.2 rushing
yards per game.
You dont have to say
much more than that,
Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers
said. Weve played these
guys a lot recently and, of
course, theyve added Elliott, whos got real ability because hes strong
and can break tackles and
yet hes got breakaway
speed. You combine that
with their offensive line,
theyre very efficient with
their run game. Theyre
physical. Thats the first
thing you look at when
you look at the Cowboys
offense is their ability to
run the ball. You probably
recall last year when they
came in that they had two
long breakaway runs on
us. Thats always a concern because these guys,
theyre very good blockers, theyre very athletic
and Elliott looks to me like
hes really kind of hit his
stride in terms of yards
per rush.
Elliott leads the NFL
with 546 rushing yards and

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2016

is averaging 5.0 yards per

pop. The 225-pounder has
power and speed, as he
displayed with his 60-yard
touchdown vs. Cincinnati
last week. All he has done
is top 130 rushing yards
in each of his past three
games. No rookie running
back in NFL history has
done it four consecutive
times.
Even with left guard
Lael Collins on injured
reserve, Dallas has a powerhouse offensive line.
Tyron Smith might be the
best left tackle in the NFL,
Zack Martin might be the
best right guard in the
NFL and Travis Frederick
is one of the best centers in
the NFL. Frederick (Sharon) and right tackle Doug
Free (Manitowoc) are Wisconsin natives. Smith, Collins and Frederick were
first-round picks; Collins
probably would have been,
too, but he went undrafted
after his name was linked
to a murder just before the
2015 draft (he eventually
was cleared).
The Packers, however,
are playing run defense at
an almost unprecedented
level. Green Bay is allowing 42.8 rushing yards per
game and 1.99 yards per
carry. Thats more than
25 yards per game and
0.98 yards per carry better than the Jets, who are
ranked second in both categories. According to the

17

Elias Sports Bureau, the

only team to allow fewer
rushing yards in the first
four games of a season
dating to 1933 are the 1995
49ers, who gave up 157
rushing yards.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Dan Bailey is one of the

best kickers in the business but is battling a sore
back and is 8 of 10 on field
goals. His long for the season is 56 yards. Last year,
he went 30 of 32, with his
93.8 percent marksmanship ranking second in
the NFL. Baileys counterpart, Mason Crosby, is
7 of 7 one of six kickers
in the league to be perfect on field goals. Lucky
Whitehead averages 25.3
yards on kickoff returns
and 7.6 yards on punt returns. Other than Crosby,
the Packers havent done
anything well on special
teams. They rank 22nd on
kickoff returns, 32nd on
kickoff coverage, 32nd on
punt returns and 17th on
punt return coverage.

COACHING

The Packers lead the

series 14-12 (17-15 including playoffs), with Green
Bay owning a 9-1 record
at Lambeau Field. The
Packers have won five
straight in the series, including 28-7 last year and
26-21 in a divisional playoff game on Jan. 11, 2015.

Glover Quin says he

stays away from alcohol
during the season, drinks
more than 200 ounces of
water daily, and some
weeks hell allow himself
to splurge and have one
dessert.
The Detroit Lions safety lifts weights four times
between games and participates in every practice,
passing on the option of
taking a day off here and
there as eight-year veterans are able to do in

the NFL. Quins regimen

seems to be working very
well.
He has started 105
straight games, the longest active streak by an
NFL safety and the longest among his teammates.
Its something that I
do take pride in, especially
now that the number has
gotten pretty high, Quin
said Wednesday.
Its definitely something that I think about in
the offseason, during the
week and week to week. It
pushes you. I want to play
in all the games. More importantly, I would like to
play in every play of every

game. And to do that, you got to

practice.
Detroit (2-3) will play the Los
Angeles Rams (3-2) on Sunday.
The Lions have made a lot of
moves over the years that simply
havent panned out, leading to
just two winning seasons since
2001.
Signing Quin as a free agent
three years ago has been an exception. He has one interception
this season, raising his total with
the Lions to 15 to trail only Seattles Richard Sherman since
2013.
He had an NFL-high seven
interceptions in 2014, becoming the first Lions player to lead
the league in that category since
1967 when Lem Barney began his
Hall of Fame career with 10 interceptions.
Hes impressive to watch,
Rams coach Jeff Fisher said.
Ive got great respect for him.
Week in and week out, hes just
there.
The last time Quin was not
out there on the field was Dec. 6,
2009, when Houston was at Jack-

GREEN & GOLD EXPRESS

sonville. That was Week 13 of that
season, a fact recalled correctly
Wednesday by Quin as if the Texans decision to leave him inactive
in that game still bothers him.
They said I had a concussion, Quin said. I didnt feel like
I did, but they wouldnt let me
play.
Since then, Quin has started
every game.
The 30-year-old Quin is in his
fourth season with the Lions. He
played for the Texans for four
seasons, the last two at a new position. Houston drafted the Mississippi native out of New Mexico
in the fourth round of the 2009
draft. After Quin made three interceptions in his second season
at cornerback, he was moved to
strong safety.
We got a new D-coordinator,
Wade Philips, and he liked more
cover safeties, Quin said. I was
always the guy who knew what
was going on and was a communicative type guy.
He still is.
Quin talked with reporters at
his locker for more than 20 minutes Wednesday and that was not
an unusually long conversation.
On the field, he is often seen speaking to teammates to show and tell

them what to do and where to be.

Hes been a great person to
watch and learn from because
of all of the experience he has,
said 21-year-old cornerback Alex
Carter, who is on Detroits practice squad. As a young guy like
me, its amazing to see someone
who has been in the league as
long as he has and to see how
hard he works every day.
He understands what the offense is trying to do and how the
defense works. He lets us see
what his mind sees. In the film
room, he may say, When this is
the formation, and the front is
doing this and the back is doing
that, and the end is crashing, you
want to be here. His football IQ is
immensely high.
And, Quin seems to think it is
simply intelligent to choose not
to drink during the season.
If you drink on a Tuesday
night and you come into work a
little hung over, your workout in
the weight room probably wont
be as tough as my workout, Quin
said, explaining his reasoning.
Your focus in the meeting room
probably wont be as good as my
focus. Your stamina at practice
probably wont be as good as my
stamina.

They said I had a concussion. I didnt feel like I did, but they wouldnt let me play.
GLOVER QUIN, Detroit Lions safety

Bears continue shuffling injured defensive players

Fangio takes
blame for Colts
winning score
The Associated Press

Chicago Bears secondyear safety Adrian Amos

played five positions in
college, so all the lineup
shuffling his current team
is doing is nothing too traumatic.
Still, its anything but
ideal when injuries force
a rebuilding team to use
numerous inexperienced
defensive players before
theyre ready, and it partially explains the Bears
1-4 start this season.
Communication
is
everything for us, Amos
said. With the way the
season has been going, we
know anybody can be in
there at any time.
So we have to all know
the terminology and understand each other.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Chicago Bears cornerback Crevon LeBlanc is one the Bears learning

on the job due to injuries on the defensive side of the ball, which has
contributed to Chicagos 1-4 start to the season.

Going against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, the Bears could have

even more lineup changes

in the secondary.
Its
possible
Chris

Prosinski could start at

safety in place of Harold
Jones-Quartey, although
defensive coordinator Vic
Fangio said this hasnt yet
been decided. A hamstring
injury could cause Bryce
Callahan to sit out, leading
to playing time for Jacoby
Glenn, rookies Deiondre
Hall and CreVon LeBlanc.
The secondary has used
nine players in coverage,
and it all started before the
regular season with knee
surgery for starting cornerback Kyle Fuller. Several other nagging injuries
added to the problem.
Through those changes, as well as injuries to
linebackers Danny Trevathan, Lamarr Houston and
nose tackle Eddie Goldman, the Bears still rank
14th in yards allowed. They
finished 19th last season.
Were hopefully getting better every day,
coach John Fox said. I
think it wasnt all bad (Sunday). We had the ball last

with an opportunity to win

and it just didnt work out.
Those guys will grow
and get better just like everybody else on our football team.
Fangio said its a setback for the development of numerous inexperienced players when
theyre suffering injuries.
Rookie Leonard Floyd
is one example. The Bears
first-round
draft
pick
missed last weeks game
with a calf injury.
Theyre in all the meetings, at all the practices
getting mental reps, but
ultimately the only way
you learn is doing it on the
practice field and doing it
in the games, Fangio said.
The Colts took advantage of Glenns inexperience at corner for a gamewinning,
fourth-quarter
touchdown pass last week.
Fangio absorbed some
blame by saying he should
have given an inexperienced player help.

I should have protected him better on that

play, Fangio said. So half
of that is my fault. I should
have given him more help
knowing hes in there.
But hey, thats just
part of being a corner.
Youve got to be able to
come back. Theyre going
to catch some balls on you.
Youve got to learn from it
and play it better the next
time.
The learning could continue Sunday against Jacksonville quarterback Blake
Bortles and receiver Allen
Robinson.
When injured players
start coming to full health,
a rebuilt defense could begin to fulfill the expectations coaches had.
We just have to keep
plugging away, linebacker Willie Young said. Well
worry about the things
that we can control.
The things we cant
control its oh well, just
keep plugging away.

Bradford fitting in perfectly with Minnesota

Minnesota focuses
on improvements
during bye week
The Associated Press

Sam Bradford has started all

of four games for Minnesota.
The Vikings arent yet onethird of the way through their
schedule.
The early return on that expensive emergency trade the Vikings made for Bradford, though,
could not have been better.
Theyre the only undefeated
team remaining in the NFL,
and Bradford has the secondbest passer rating in the league
(109.8) among quarterbacks with
a qualifying amount of attempts.
Obviously, its a great start,
said Bradford, who was fetched
from Philadelphia for a firstround draft pick in 2017 and a
conditional selection in 2018
thatll be in the second, third or
fourth round. You couldnt ask
for anything more than being 5-0
going into your bye week.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam

Bradford is finding his niche just fine with
offensive coordinator Norv Turner. The
undefeated Vikings have a bye this week.

Waiting for the Vikings after

the welcomed break is a road
game on Oct. 23 against those
Eagles (3-1), who havent missed
Bradford one bit because of the
success of rookie Carson Wentz.
Coach Mike Zimmer cracked

a couple of smiles after Minnesotas 31-13 victory over Houston

on Sunday, but hell soon enter
his usual state of anxiety about
the upcoming opponent and how
to slow its offense.
Like Coach Zimmer said
after the game, its still a lot of
work this team needs to do,
Bradford said. I think theyre
still rooting for us to improve,
and I think thats our mindset
going forward. Were not satisfied. Its early in the year, and we
havent accomplished anything
yet.
No, but the Vikings have at
least mastered the art of resilience, after losing quarterback
Teddy Bridgewater, running
back Adrian Peterson, left tackle
Matt Kalil and now right tackle
Andre Smith, all perhaps for the
rest of the season.
Bridgewaters colossal injury
to his left knee triggered the deal
for Bradford eight days before
the opener, and the 28-year-old
former No. 1 overall draft pick
has meshed with his new teammates and picked up offensive
coordinator Norv Turners play-

book as if hes been in purple his

whole pro career.
The offensive coaches have
done a great job of getting him
prepared, Zimmer said. The
one thing about Sam is that he
will communicate the things that
he likes to do.
If we have a play in the game
plan that he doesnt like, hes going to tell Norv, and we get rid
of the play. We try to do things
that hes comfortable with, even
though its been a short period of
time.
When wide receiver Stefon
Diggs (groin) was held out on
Sunday against the Texans,
Adam Thielen stepped up with
seven catches for 127 yards and
a tone-setting touchdown on the
opening drive .
I really didnt know much
about this team at all, to be honest, before I got here. I think
I learn a little bit more each
week, Bradford said. I think
weve definitely got a lot of playmakers on the offensive side of
the ball, a lot of guys that we feel
if can get the ball in their hands
then good things will happen.

Peterson led the league in

rushing again last year, but he
had only 50 yards on 31 carries
before damaging his right knee.
His absence, as strange as it
sounds, could actually have been
a productive development for the
offense provided Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata remain
healthy as a viable two-man fillin.
Bradford, who has completed
70.4 percent of his passes for 990
yards and six touchdowns, acknowledged on Sunday the creative spark that followed the loss
of Peterson.
Rather than lining up in traditional setups for power running
plays, the Vikings have been operating predominantly out of the
shotgun and frequently using
spread formations for a quickpassing, up-tempo attack.
I think thats a little bit different than what the offense
has done in the past, Bradford
said. I think its just us getting
to know each other, us getting
familiar with where were going
as an offense. But I think its just
guys buying in.
