Everyone enjoys spending time with family and friends doing
fun things. There are so many activities you can go out and take
part in. Lots of people enjoy going to adventure parks. These places
usually have something for everyone. Adventurous people can ride a
roller coaster while other people can sit and enjoy a coffee and a
snack. Many large adventure parks have a zoo, where you can see
wild animals and even watch sharks glide around an aquarium. They
also have a lot of different types of restaurants and fast food places.
They are organized especially for families and have everything you
need or want. They offer childrens menus and most also have
vegetarian options. You have the option to pick up a sandwich and
eat on the run, or sit down in a beautiful dining room and enjoy a full
meal.
Another fun thing to do is throw on a pair of trainers and go
out to a sports centre. All people, young and old, like getting a group
of friends together and going out to a place where they can go
swimming, play sports and socialize. At the weekend, sport centres
usually have special events that often include music and food.
Sometimes they even organize sporting events away from the
centre, such as jogging clubs and learn to sail days.

Eating on the Go
Its actually easier than you think to make good choices at a
fast-food restaurant or even the school canteen. Most canteens and
fast-food places offer healthy choices that are also tasty. It can be
easy to eat well, even on the run. If you develop the skills to make
healthy choices now, your body will thank you later. Not only will
you look better, you will feel better and have more energy. The good
news is you dont have to eat perfectly all the time. Its OK to have a
dessert or snack or even some crisps every once in a while, as long
as your daily food choices are generally good.
Here are some pointers to remember that can help you make
better, healthier choices when eating on the go:
Go for balance. Choose meals that have proteins (like fish,
chicken, or beans if youre a vegetarian), fruits and vegetables
and whole-grain breads.
Watch serving sizes. The serving sizes in restaurants have
increased over the past few years and we are now eating
much more than we need. Most restaurant portions are larger
than the average serving of food at home. You can ask for half
portions, share a main course with a friend, or take half of
your meal home.

Chinese New Year
The Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, is the most
important celebration in China. The festival lasts for 15 days and
starts on the first day of the Chinese calendar, usually in late
January or early February in the western calendar. The festival
comes from a legend about a monster called the Nian who came on
the first day of the New Year to eat the villages animals and
children. However, one year a little child was wearing red and the
Nian ran away frightened. Nowadays, during the festival people put
red lanterns outside their homes, wear red clothes and use fireworks
to scare the Nian away.
On the days before New Years Eve families clean their houses
to take all the bad luck of the previous year away. Some families put
up a palm tree. On New Years Eve every family has a big dinner,
usually with fish. They celebrate when it is midnight and set off
fireworks.
On New Years Day people try to start the year with good luck,
so many people dont light a fire or use knives. People visit older
relatives and give children red envelopes with money, or chocolate
money if they are very young. Also, many people wear new red
clothes and slippers. People also eat sweets so that the year ahead
will be sweet.

special for a different reason. The second day, for example, is the
birthday of all dogs! The fifteenth day is the Lantern Festival.
Families light candles outside their homes and walk in the street
with lanterns to give light to show the gods their way home.
Chinese New Year is celebrated around the world wherever

THE DRAGONFLY SUMMER
Adam was sitting in his secret place by the pond. He loved
insects and looked for grasshoppers and beetles in his garden. He
also caught spiders in the attic and kept them in jars. Now, Adam
was waiting for his favourite bug to arrive. He sat in the same place
every day after eating his breakfast on the veranda. After some
time, he would leave the table and run from the house. He liked to
get to the pond early. This summer, beautiful blue dragonflies
danced over the water. He wanted to reach out and connect with
one of them and maybe even have it land on him because some
people think this is very lucky.

Today, he was patient and expected some to arrive soon.

Suddenly, he saw red and then green dragonflies. There were a lot
this morning, flying above the many different plants. He moved as
close as he could and stayed quiet. He saw that all of them had long
abdomens as long as one of his fingers. They had huge eyes and
two shiny wings. They looked like the beautiful fairies in his sisters
stories. One day, he would paint them and show his friends.
On some days, he watched them for hours. He saw them eat
other flying insects like mosquitoes and small butterflies. He was
amazed that they also attacked smaller dragonflies and ate them
too.
Learning about dragonflies was Adams new hobby and he
wanted to know everything about them. At home, he asked his
mother where he could get information about them. That afternoon,
she bought him an interesting book about dragonfly legends and
myths. On the first few pages, he learnt that dragonflies are
important in Japanese culture. People there think that these insects
make their country strong and happy. They have traditional names
for all of the two hundred species. Japanese children love to chase
and catch them as a game. Japan was the first country in the world
to build a special Dragonfly Nature Reserve. Dragonflies are also
popular in Japanese art and jewellery.
Adam was very excited with his new book. Many of the
dragonflies in the pictures looked like the ones around Adams pond.

Test One
Mother: Hello, David. How was your first day back at school?
David: Hi, Mum. It was great. I have a new teacher this year and
there are a few new students in my class, too.
Mother: Oh, tell me about your new teacher.
David: Her name is Miss Adams. Shes really nice. She is tall and
quite slim with long brown hair. Its her first year teaching, so she is
a little nervous.
Mother: Im glad you like her. What does she teach?
David: History. She teaches English too, but Im not in that class.
Mother: So, do you have Mr. Rogers for English again this year?
David: Yes, but I cant stand him. He gives us too much homework!
Mother: I think hes an excellent teacher. Anyway, tell me about
your new classmates.
David: There is a new boy from France. His name is Jack. His father
is working in England for a year.
Mother: You should try to speak French to him. Its good practice.
Anyway, are you planning to play any sports in school this year?
David: I was thinking about playing rugby or football.
Mother: I know your father wants you to play rugby, but I think its
too dangerous. I would prefer it if you joined the football team
instead.
David: Im not sure. Maybe I wont play any sports this year.
Mother: OK. Do you have any homework to do?
David: Not tonight, so Im going over to Jacks house.
Mother: OK, but make sure youre home for dinner by 7.

Ann: Hi Betty, where are you going on holiday this year?
Betty: Oh hello, Ann. Im thinking about a few different places. Last
year I went on a beach holiday in Greece and then a cruise around
the islands, so I want to do something different this year.
Ann: What about a hiking holiday in Spain? I went there last year
and I loved it! You should go in the spring or autumn though,
because the summer is very hot.
Betty: Thats good advice. I may even go on a downhill skiing
adventure holiday in the mountains.
Ann: That sounds exciting. You could go to Italy, they have fantastic
skiing there.
Betty: Oh yes, that is exactly what I am going to do. Italy in
February perfect!
Ann: Oh, well thats good. I guess you wont need any dresses or
skirts and suits if you are going skiing.
Betty: No, I will only need to take warm comfortable jumpers and
trousers.
Ann: What about the weather? Do you think it will be windy and
cold or cloudy and rainy?
Betty: Well, in February it shouldnt be freezing cold and I dont
expect there is going to be rain. In fact, they say its usually chilly,
but sunny. Which makes sense, you dont want it to be too warm or
the snow melts! I just hope we dont have any storms or fog.
Ann: Good point. Do you have your own skiing equipment or are
you going to get it there?
Betty: I think I am going to rent it when I get there. Mine is quite old
and I dont think my boots even fit me anymore.
Ann: What size do you wear? I have a pair that is size 37 and my
sister has either 38 or 39, if you would like to borrow them.
Betty: Thanks, but I need a size 40, thats too bad though, that
would have saved me 35 a day.
Ann: What about gloves? I have some really good water-proof ski
gloves that are very warm.
Betty: Oh yes, those sound nice. I have warm wool socks and a long
scarf and hat with ear flaps but I could use good gloves. I will pick
them up from you later.
Ann: OK. Go see the travel agent and then come over.
Betty: Sounds great. Thanks for all of your help. Bye for now.
Ann: Bye.

playing in goal and I fell when I tried to save the ball.
Jane: Oh, Im sorry about that. What else? I know. Lets go
shopping. The shops are open late this evening.
George: Thats a good idea. I need to buy a new pair of trainers.
Jane: I need to go shopping, too. Its my fathers birthday tomorrow,
so I need to buy him a present. I think I will get him a tie.
George: Ill help you. I bought my father a jumper last week in a
very nice menswear shop on Main Street. Ill show it to you.
Jane: Great. Do you want to get something to eat afterwards?
Theres a new pizza restaurant in the town centre?
George: Id rather not. Its probably too expensive. Lets just get a
takeaway at a fast food restaurant.
Jane: Good idea, George. We can bring it to my house and see that
film I was telling you about. I read online that its very good.
George: So where and when will we meet?
Jane: Its five oclock now, so lets meet in half an hour outside the
cinema?
George: My mother said I have to do some chores first. Is half past
six OK with you?
Jane: Perfect! See you then.
Test Four
Jacob: My brother Tim has got a new job and its the best one in the
world!
Kelly: Why, what does he do?
Jacob: Hes a food taster!
Kelly: Wasnt he a chef at that place where your cousin is a waiter?
Jacob: No, he cant even boil an egg! He used to work at the
bakers. Now hes at that new food company down the road.
Kelly: So what does a food taster do?
Jacob: Well, Tim eats chicken, meat and dairy products. He has to
test their flavours, which is the most important. He also checks the
colour of the food, feels it and makes sure that it smells ok.
Kelly: Well, that must be boring. Doesnt he eat anything nice like
chocolate or cake?
Jacob: No, he doesnt like sweet foods anyway. He loves chicken
though, so he enjoys his work.
Kelly: Yes, but eating it eight hours a day!
Jacob: He doesnt eat all day. He spends about two hours in the
morning tasting a food. Then, he has to write down his opinions. In
the afternoons, he looks at recipes for an hour or goes to meetings.
He also likes to spend a few minutes smelling the foods.

Express Publishing PHOTOCOPIABLE

40

Kelly: Did someone have to teach him how to taste the food?
Jacob: Yes. He had to learn all about the different ways of cooking
chicken. He had to know which countries the products came from.
He learnt which cheeses were salty and how some cheeses might
not be strong enough to taste. Food tasters have an important job
because they check that the food sold to us will keep everyone
healthy.
Kelly: I think that Tim will get bored testing the same foods. They
should give him something more exciting to taste.
Jacob: Well, I read somewhere that some food tasters eat strange
foods like cat food and dog biscuits.
Kelly: Thats disgusting!
Jacob: Someone tests baby food, too.
Kelly: Thats not as bad as testing pet food. Anyway, I dont
understand why people want a job where they need to eat all this
awful food. You must get fat, too!
Jacob: Yes, but its good to know that the foods on the supermarket
shelves are the right flavour and not too sweet or salty.
Test Five
Abigail: So tell me about your holiday, Dylan. How were your
grandparents?
Dylan: It was really great, Abigail! They were well and pleased to
see me.
Abigail: So what did you do in Liverpool?
Dylan: Well, I went on an amazing sightseeing tour with my
grandfather. It was one of the best ways to see Liverpool.
Abigail: Was it a bus tour?
Dylan: Mmmm, not exactly. Its called the Yellow Duck Marine tour
and its a bus that magically becomes a boat!
Abigail: A boat?
Dylan: Yes. You see, the first part of the tour is through the city. You
sit on the yellow duck which is a bus and a tour guide explains the
many famous sites and buildings. I enjoyed seeing St Georges Hall
and the Beatles museum from the outside and hearing a few
interesting facts I didnt know about them.
Abigail: OK, but then it becomes a boat?
Dylan: Thats right. The bus returns to the Albert Dock and drives
straight from there into the River Mersey. It makes a huge splash
when it hits the water and the tour continues as a boat trip. The
yellow duck then drives straight out of the river and becomes a bus
again. It was a wonderful adventure!
Abigail: Thats amazing! How long was the tour?
Dylan: An hour, thirty minutes on land and thirty minutes on the
river.
Abigail: Was it expensive?
Dylan: I think it was about 10 for adults and 8 for children. A
family ticket was 29. Anyway, it was a trip Ill never forget!
