Fire Prevention Week 2016

Smoke alarms save lives, reminds the

B.C. Minister of State
Minister of State for Emergency Preparedness Naomi
Yamamoto has issued the following statement to the people
of British Columbia on Fire Prevention Week:
Its Fire Prevention Week and our government is encouraging all British Columbians to replace smoke alarms every
10 years. We are sharing this message - Dont Wait, Check
the Dateduring the Oct. 9-15 Fire Prevention Week to
help keep British Columbians safe this fall and beyond.
Smoke alarms that are more than 10 years old should
be replaced. To check how old your smoke alarm is, simply

look at the date of manufacture on the back of the alarm.

Smoke alarms save lives and provide early warning in
the event of a re, giving you time to take action with your
re escape plan.
Although we hope you never have to use it, planning and
practicing your home escape plan may one day save your
life and the lives of your loved ones.
The safety of all British Columbians is a top priority for
our government. This is another step we can take together to
ensure a safe future for our friends and family.

Dont Wait, Check the Date Selfie Challenge!
Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 9-15, 2016 and the Grand Forks and Christina Lake re departments want you to join the Dont
Wait, Check the Date! sele challenge.
The theme of Fire Prevention Week this year is Dont Wait, Check the Date of your smoke alarms, says Grand Forks Fire/
Rescue Chief Dale Heriot. Smoke alarms dont last forever. So we challenge everyone to take a sele of their family checking
the expiry date of their smoke alarms and post it on social media, to show everyone your alarms up to date.
Smoke alarms wear out over time and need to be replaced within the time frame indicated by the manufacturer, usually 10
years. The date of manufacture is indicated on the back of the smoke alarm and the expiry date is taken from that date. While
smoke alarms typically last 10 years, some have different expiry time frames. Check the manufacturers instructions for the
expiry time frame of your smoke alarms.
The re departments also remind you that smoke alarms are required on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping
areas. Test all of your smoke alarms monthly by pushing the test button on the alarm, and replace batteries at least once a year
or when the alarms low battery signal begins to chirp.
For more information about smoke alarms, contact Christina Lake Fire Rescue online at christinalake.com/living/healthcare/item/christina-lake-re-and-rescue, or at its Facebook page, Christina Lake Fire Rescue; visit Grand Forks Fire/Rescue
online at gffr.ca; or, the B.C. Ofce of the Fire Commissioner at www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/emergency-preparedness-response-recovery/re-safety.
