ABSTRACT
The elderly will face the changes of most of physiologic systems, nervous
system such an example. Those changes can decrease the brain function. Some
studies also mention that although without a neurodegenerative disease, it is clear
that there are changes in human brain structure as someone aged. The aim of this
study is to know the description of cognitive in elderly with its demographic
characteristics, such as age, sex and education level.
This study is a descriptive study with cross sectional method to find
cognitive impairment in elderly. The sample was 100 elderly people age 65 yrs
and have at least elementary school as the education level also doesnt have
hearing impairment. These samples was chosen with consecutive sampling
method. The cognitive impairment was detected by using Mini Mental State
Examination 11-item.
In this study, 34% respondents was detected had cognitive impairment.
Forty five point seven percents of women had cognitive impairment, higher than
men (27,7%). Cognitive impairment in old-old elderly (50%) is higher than the
young-old elderly. Also in education level, elementary elderly (62,5%) is the
highest in getting cognitive impairment.
Prevalence of cognitive impairment in elderly in community is high
enough. Deeper analytical about the causes of this high prevalence is needed,
because as the causes are known, prevention of cognitive impairment can be
provided and also increase quality of elderlys life
